New years are full of confessions, resolutions, and promises.I like to keep it simple. One motto, one word, and a wishlist.
One main motto:
Stay calm and carry on!
Have you seen things fall into place when you are calm?Have you seen people and situation get worse when you get scared andย upset?ย Most difficult and crippling emotion is fear andย anxiety.
“Daar ke ageyย jeet hai ”is not justย true. But an important part of life
So what are my top tips for handling scary stuff?
I discuss with people Iย trust.
Think about giving up trying.Yes, I do that to keep my priorities inย focus.
ย I think about the absolute best and worst from that situation. The worstย visualizationย has a way of seeing the bigger picture and helps me calm down a lot.
I get on my treadmill and start walking listening toย music. This is one of my secret weapons of a more calmer and productive me. This is fail proof.Even when I don’t have a solution at the end of walking I am infinitelyย calmer.Much better for my BP and those around me.
I go on a weeding spree. There areย fewย things betterย than pulling up weeds and cleaning up your garden.
I paint my planters and pots.
I start dusting or folding clothes. Both theseย actsย of organizing my home helps me feel more inย control.
ย I read myย favoriteย book andย take aย nap.
All theseย helpย me relax.
ย One quote
Health is Wealth
This was for 2014 ,2015, 2016 and now 2017
My blog was namedย Healthwealthbridge toย help me remember thisย truth.
ย
What I didn’t finishย in 2017
I am sorry to say Iย still amย halfway throughย at leastย 20ย books. It’s embarrassing but the truth.I read around 61 books but that’s much less than my personal goals.
If it’s one word I will say Believe.
The first time I read Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow rich I laughed.
You will laugh too if I tell you the title of the book is the exact premise of the book.
But one thing I took away from the book I took to heart was the power of our thoughts.
Your mind is all powerful.Your brain is still unchartered territory for scientists. We have traveled to new planets searching for life. Our scientists discovered another galaxy but no one has been able to correctly estimate the strength or power of your thoughts.Should you measure it in Gigabytes? In light years, or in unicorn numbers?
When logic fails sense fails and you want to stop trying to try one more with belief.Believing means not letting a shred of doubt pierce your armor.
Know the truths the myths and the hardship and then decide what you will believe in.
What if youย believe you will fail?
If you believe this you are guaranteed to fail.
Why not believe and try?If nothing else you will have a beautiful story to tell your grandchildren.
[bctt tweet=”Life, after all, is your own fairytale.” username=”misra_amrita”]
You choose the fairies and demons.Do you want to be a victim or a superhero??All will depend on what you believe in.
If you want your child to be strong it’s important you give enough protein in her diet. But if you want her mind and soul to be strong, practice believing in her and with her.
The power of your minds can move mountains!
If you donโt give up on something you truly believe in, you will find a way.โ

The year that was.The memories I have. The lessons I learned, the friends I made, and the goodbyes that happened.15 startling realizations this year not random. They happened because I survived.
It was a year like never before. Sounds cliched, but I finally grew up I think. The stress is on I think.
But in the last few days of this year, as I look back, I have a sense of finality, of closure.
I am grateful to God for always giving me the tools to prop my soul up.
Sometimes you need those bandages and sellotapes to hold you together. You can call them books, habits, people, relationships, or chocolates. But the truth is they help!
15 Startling Realizations this Year
1)I think learning to breathe deeply and count to 100 and sometimes 1000 is helping me stay calm. There is news about attacks by terrorists everywhere, sometimes you just want to stop thinking. Let’s have a motto and stick to it people.
My motto:
[bctt tweet=”Evil will not win!” username=”misra_amrita”]
That’s a promise from a mother! You can beat us but we will not die. You can attack us but we will not cry. We will just become stronger till your hand breaks trying to beat us down.
2)Glass ceilings the truth about them
They are there.Everywhere.In Government offices and a Corporate corner office with a view. You will face them everywhere. But every time you think you are being skipped for the man behind you, remember, we will reach the top glass ceilings or not. Break them one at a time and always believe you have millions of women waiting to hear your story. So every time you struggle. Breathe and put on that lipstick. It will help I guarantee.
3)Walking and being healthy
One year back I was going through a rough patch and couldn’t seem to calm down, till I started using my trusted treadmill aggressively. By aggressive I mean it’s my walking desk and writing companion. Sounds weird and how can you run and write? I don’t. I walk and write. I am slow, but I persist. I have seen that the only way for me to persist and get the results I want, is by doing what I enjoy. When I clubbed writing with walking, it stopped being a chore.
4)If you stop having sugar in your tea or coffee it will make a difference to what you eat throughout the day . You stop craving those cakes, cookies, and chocolates. It’s always easier to control what you eat even while traveling when it’s a good habit.
5)I completed three years of blogging. That makes life very interesting. Thereโs a saying you need to have 10,000 hours of learning a craft before you are good at it . Good or not I understand the concept. It’s about sweat . Nothing succeeds like success and success is 99%perspiration!
6)I want my daughter to be strong and kind. The rest God will help me with. Oh also financially independent. That is something I want her to be. If I could make syrup and feed her this thought it would be infinitely useful. Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to parenting. I have to do this the long way, one story at a time.
7)Husbands are to be chosen carefully. Yes, I have felt this from the time I started reading Mills and Boons. After being with my best friend for 15 years and being married for 9 and a half I realized in life you need a friend and a game worth playing. If parents help you stand up and walk, your spouse sees you grow wiser more beautiful, or crankier. If they don’t love your flaws it’s not easy.
[bctt tweet=”In life, you need a friend and a game worth playing ” username=”misra_amrita”]
Love the flaws the cracks the shortcomings and the person. If you are a good friend you will have a good friend too!
8)Some kindnesses can never be repayed. They may be disguised and you may miss them when you were helped. But when your life changes and the veil lifts a lot can be revealed .Wait, introspect, and think of all the epople who have been kind to you even once .When you remember kindness and feel thankful you send positive energy toward your well-wisher. That’s a good thing right?
9)Don’t stop yourself from starting a garden. Rental? No problem.Apartment? No problem. Traveling no problem.I have solutions for all .
Get succulents. They don’t need much water and can tolerate any kind of neglect.
Get a vertical gardenwith inbuilt watering and nutrition synced to your mobile. Yes you can have it in India too.
Talk to your nursery owner to babysit your plants.
Help your neighbors start a community garden and keep your potted plants there when traveling.
10)Life will give you lemons and you can make lemonade, cheesecake, pickle just about anything. Lemons are great. You will get exactly what you want just don’t forget writing to the universe about it.
11)Thankfulness.I have written 53 thankfulness posts last year and plan to find more ways to be thankful this year How did this help me?
You are what you practice. What you focus on grows. It’s better to focus on the goodand the blessings it will help attract more of the good stuff.
12)What will be will be?
Then why should you even try? You must try. Sometimes the Universe says
That will be which you will!
Tricky right? This is where persistence always helps. I never give up until the river changes its course or I reach the shore. Whichever comes first.Good or bad this is still my favourite part of me !
13)I love lipsticks and that’s a good thing.A few months back on a decluttering spree my hubby threw away plenty of my makeup stuff. Good thing as it was beyond expiry date. The best part I got to buy new lipsticks to try . You really can’t have enough lipstick ever.Get rid of clutter and junk to make a place for new good things.
14)When I was a young girl festival were bittersweet Not going into the deep end I would say they made me stronger even if they didn’t give me happy memories.
With my child, I take every opportunity to create memories, every moment of every day.I tell her my stories and want her to understand that taller, stronger, and sharper is what all girls have to be!Because sometimes being born is the blessings.Everything else can go downhill after that. Will you act or react? Will you take it lying it down, or get up and fight? That is the question!
With cases of child abuse being reported from every nook and cranny, one wonders what happened to people’s fear of karma. Does karma not exist or is this the biggest game that the universe plays with all the nonbelievers and evil doers.
This false sense of get away with anything? It is false right? When these people look into the mirror, they know. Their family knows and there is always a higher court not necessarily in this life. Those destined for eternal suffering repeat their mistakes.
[bctt tweet=”Those who repent and make amends get blessed.” username=”misra_amrita”]
Be strong. Strength is something you will need, to battle this.
15)Don’t be cynical, be wise. Life events have a way of making you bitter, distrusting and less of a believer. But that’s exactly when you need to believe.Pray , believe and have faith. It will be okay.
This is a season of good wishes, parties and good food. When you share giftsย you share good wishes.Joy and happiness shared are always doubled.Gifts to your girlfriend or wife can be a tricky business if you leave it last moment.

Ladies if you are reading this , save this , pin this, Email this to your partner.Don’t forget to add your inputs in the comments and I will update the post giving due credit to you.
When I initially thought of writing this post, I wasnโt sure how much I should say. Should I talk about the not so good and painful parts? Or should I just focus on the beauty of giving birth which is akin to a miracle? That’s the one time you feel like a superwoman.
I finally thought that it would be a good idea to share the whole of my experience. What helped me and what guided my soul and how I prepared for what was going to be the most important journey of my life.
15 Startling Truths No One Tells You About Giving Birth
#1 While giving birth is a miracle, the pain is real. Be ready for the pain. The good news is that it doesnโt pain all the time, but when it does, it hurts really bad. You will crave sedation and loads of painkillers. Unfortunately, all of that is not good for the baby. So, there will be some pain before, during or after. This is what you need to know about giving birth for the first time.
Be ready for the immense warm, fuzzy love spreading through your body and numbing the pain. The love you will feel for your child can compare to nothing. It’s when you become a mother that you know how fiercely protective you can be.
#2 Being a mommy is the most significant adventure and the hardest challenge. All of you who are mothers know that the best way to get ready for normal delivery is to attend antenatal birthing classes. Learning this with your partner is going to be the best experience. If not spouse at least a friend who can be with you during these classes helps to a great deal. Making a baby and giving birth-both need help.
Unfortunately, you will find few places in India focusing on this aspect of maternity care. But this goes a long way in making your body ready for giving birth. So, the effort of looking up and attending these classes is totally worth it.
Antenatal classes and guidance is something Sitaram Bhartia Hospital in New Delhi is trying to stress on. Ethical practices, the disclosure of normal delivery and cesarean rates, transparency in patient feedback policies are their USP. As a doctor, I know that fetal monitoring during delivery is one of the parameters by which the decision for the type of birth is arrived at. Their exceptional normal delivery rate of 88% (2016) shows the expertise and dedication of their doctors to the cause.
While exploring the services they offered, I saw that their cesarean rates for moms with a prior normal delivery, with a single baby in the head-down position who cross 37 weeks is < 2%. Now this one sounds complicated but is again proof of the ability of their doctors to choose the right case for each type of delivery. Knowing when to choose which procedure on a case to case basis makes pregnancy and childbirth a miracle and a challenge. The right doctor to patient ratio, transparent costs, and ethical practices is how this hospital set the right example of how maternal and child care facilities should operate.
#3 Your spouse will be a new parent too. Don’t expect him to know everything. Just like you, he is learning. Grow a few patient bones because you will need all of them.
#4 When I was planning a baby, I was working in Delhi. I was a typical โdoctor going to be the mommyโ- incessantly worrying about everything under the sun. While finding the best gynecologist in Delhi was easy, what wasnโt easy is finding a good nanny to train.
Talk to your Doctor
If you are a working mom, please accept that you will need help. Talk to friends, neighbors about good nanny centers and daycare. Even better try to start a daycare facility at your workplace, with support from management Nowadays corporates want to help retain sincere and intelligent woman in their workforce, so this may work out. If not try to leverage work at home options with few office visits.
All this sounds premature when the baby is inside. But believe me, this is what will steal your sleep for the next several years.
#5 Plan a well-balanced and nutritious diet. If you are already overweight, you may need to put on lesser weight than someone who has a normal pre-conception weight. Talk to your doctor about exactly how much you should gain. Excessive weight gain is associated with an abnormal increase in blood pressure, gestational diabetes, thyroid dysfunctions all of which needs to be avoided as far as possible.
Eat well and on time
#6 Walk and do what you love to keep fit. Yoga and exercise need to be discussed with your doctor. While pregnancy and childbirth are a natural process, every mother-to-be needs individual care. See what works for you and do exactly that. A little exercise goes a long way in making your mood better and keeping you fit. It will keep those happy hormones flowing.
Embrace your body’s transformation but try to keep fit as much as you can.
7 Read positive, inspiring stories and self-help books. Watch the positive news and overall keep your happiness quotient high. Your child feels every mood swing and hormone change. Pre-birth stress affecting the fetus is a reality, and you should keep that in mind before you decide to binge watch horrors. Avoid negativity at all costs.
#8 Donโt try to google your way through medical jargons.Unfortunately, there are no quality checks for whats available online. If you want to know the truth about something about your health be aware but talk to your doctor before making any changes to your routine. A good and experienced doctor talks with years of experience and knowledge behind her/his words.
#9 Listen to music because your unborn baby can hear pretty early on. They can even recognize angry voices. Talk to the little one, tell her/him about your dreams and aspirations. Sing to them, tell them a story. They will be listening.
#10 Have a group of family members who are a phone call away. In the mad rush of balancing life and a career, we forget the human connection. Believe me when I say that you will want all your cousins and friends around you to help at the weirdest of moments. A dear friendโs wife helped me out when my mom was unable to babysit. Her kindness left a mar. I realized that it really takes a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, we seem to be growing further and further away from our own tribe. So, keep your tribe close. Be there for them, and you will have angels reaching out. Remember- God always helps, you just need to ask for it.
#11 Talk to your health insurance provider/agent and get paperwork in order. Talk to the hospital’s insurance person. Insurance needs calm discussion, and in the excitement of giving birth, you can’t have financial loopholes.
#12 Keep some cash handy. With all the digitalization you never know when cash is needed.During stressful times we often forget password and pins.
#13 Keep a hospital bag ready with all essentials. I had my Kindle and charger stashed in it from the last 21 days. I also kept my lip balm and my favorite lipstick. It does help with the impromptu photoshoots when you can put on lipstick before you leave the hospital.
#14 Take your supplements. They are very important to keep you and the baby healthy.
#15 Know your blood group, your husbandโs blood group. Also, keep a few friends ready and primed if you need help with blood transfusion at any time. It sounds weird but hear me out. I talk from experience.
I am Rh negative, and no immediate relative or friend had the same blood group. While hospitals I know have stocks, I slept more peacefully knowing a friend of a friend was a ready and fit donor.
Above all pray hard. Yes, prayers always help. You may be non-religious or an atheist. It doesn’t matter. You can always talk to the universe and send your gratitude out there. They will come raining down as blessings for your child.

Raising a reader is even more difficult than being a reader. My grandma from the paternal side was a career woman in the 60s and 70s. My mom and all my aunts had full-time jobs at a time when women hardly studied or thought about being financially independent. They were all book lovers.Parents, and grandparents all have a role to play in giving us our reading genes. Moms I feel have the biggest role to play.
Estimated reading time: 5 minutes
When I was a kid I remember I spent my summer vacations reading fairy tales with my mom and coloring the pictures and sketches that came with the books. Sometimes they didn’t need to be colored, but try telling that to a five-year-old.I never remember my mom ever pushing me to read a book.I read books, newspapers magazines anything I could get my hands on. The second-hand/much-loved book library at Golpark was a treasure trove. The books were often torn, sometimes dirty and dog-eared, and sometimes outright smelly but if it was a Perry Mason(later ), an Agatha Christie, a Famous Five I would read it. My father used to take me there and the reading cost was a flat rate of Rs 10 and a deposit of Rs 100 depending on how many books you took.
A cost-effective, eco-friendly, just right for book-friendlyย people.
My daughter likes reading her fairytale books with plenty of pics. She loves being read too. As a family, we read all the time for fun, education, as a weekend activity, and family activity too. We study together all the time. My hubby, unfortunately, doesn’t read storybooks. But that’s what having a voracious mother for a reader helped. I read to her when she was a baby, I told her stories when she was inside me. Now we read to each other.
Tips from a Bookworm Mommy to Raise a Reader
#1 Read to her even if you think she doesn’t understand. Remember your voice, emotions, and vocabulary all have a role to play in her growing up. Not audiobooks and not storytime on YouTube .read to her even if it’s one page per day. Audiobooks are important but not just then!
#2ย Tellย her about why you love reading. Talk to her about the joys of learning to read. Tell her stories about your first books andย how you made friends over a shared interest in books.
#3ย ย Read something you would enjoy too.I still love reading Famous Five andย Faraway tree and all Enid Blyton books. So Start reading something which works for both and it won’t be a chore.
#4 Comics are not all bad. The wonder woman, Superman, Phantom, Birbal, and even Archie’s comic books taught us something. So don’t ban things. Just keep a watch on what she consumes. What she reads she will learn. So more positive the message the better it is.
#5 Try picture books when they are very young. I believe it’s never too early to buy books. It’s a journey, better to start slowly and steadily. The tactile pleasure of turning pages is incomparable.
#6 Have books at home. My shelves are full of colorful children’s books, my own and some new ones. My daughter likes picking up one and trying to read when she finds us reading our books. That’s an easy one to establish a love and respect for books.
#7 Have book reading tea parties with her friends. Where they each read a chapter of a fun book they pick together. It’s a cool way to make reading interactive and is like a Grandma goose storytime. Just better
#8 Ask her to read the same book or different booksor mix them up. Both help in wiring up the brain to recognize and pronounce the words and similar ones. This helps in fluency and better reading skills.
#9 Carry a book for her when you have to wait somewhere. Don’t give her your phone give her the book.
#10 Take her to libraries and bookshops with you. Some of my fondest childhood memories are the library visits with my sister. She was a reluctant reader at first who one day became a bookworm!
Be thankful for books and reading and spread the joy around. Give her books as gifts with toys. Books are my favorite gift, even more than chocolates.I think the love of reading is contagious at least from mothers to daughters it is!
Research and educationist suggest
To raise a reader,ย be a reader.
I think that is the crux of it. We have to lead by example. One day I want her to read my blog, my books ,my stories about her, and my advice to her. I may or may not be there. When she grows up as a reader she will one day know how much being her mommy made me a writer and an artist.
Unique gifts for the Gardener man took some thought.Men I feel can rarely be given gifts which they love. It’s not their fault, it’s not our fault. The fault lies in the stars who made men and women so different. But over the years we have found a few shared interests.Surprising ones like gardening, traveling, binge-watching television, relaxing like there’s no housework and just living life one day at a time.
My hubby grew up in a small village in West Bengal. The village has about 20 families living and is a quaint little hamlet in an untouched part of this world.
When he left home for higher studies he missed the flower gardens, the veggie patches and the Mango orchards in his backyard. We, fortunately, have a thriving balcony garden and grow a lot of flowers and greens.Trying our hand at fruits and veggies. So for the man in my life, I am listing a few unique gifts.

I have a plan for a fully automated self-watering vertical garden in my new home. But in this rented home, we still have the traditional balcony garden where my in-laws help by plant sitting when we travel. My hubby would love it if he could make it self watering the DIY way. There’s no harm in trying right?
Composter: This one is something having specific requirements. It should be nonmessy. No smell, no worms(is that even possible )makes the process of waste management and compost making a breeze. In all honesty, the above criteria are mine, not his.But all moms who are reading this know exactly what I am talking about
DIY aquaponics
We have an aquarium and a home balcony garden. We would love to try aquaponics to grow more salad veggies.Maybe this book Aquaponics: Everything You Need to Know to Start an Expert DIY Aquaponic System from Home will help. When you know what you are eating gives you great satisfaction.
When you are a nature person can bird and butterflies be far behind?
A DIY bird house is a long time wish for both of us.Maybe this is the time to get it to our home.
My hubby likes a peaceful home above all. That I think will be a gift which will make him very happy always.Love, peace, and happiness are gifts I want to share with the special man in my life.
