Franklin Templeton has some good news this Christmas .Sometime back I wrote about the mysterious case of six Franklin templeton funds which were being wound up.
It was unprecedented.A lot of things in 2020 continue to be that. But what’s unprecedented in a good way is they seem to be walking the talk to make things better .
The Good news from Franklin Templeton
Once the unit holders vote, the process of giving back their money will kick in place .
I have forever felt the need for investing in a planned manner to keep my portfolio well diversified and still making money.COVID 19 kinda crashed us all.But our economy is resilient and four of the six funds are already cash positive.You can read about the timeline for that here.
Mr.Sanjay Sapre(President ,FT India) is confident that other two will swim to shore soon.
When asked about how they are going about rebuilding the trust back in their brand,Mr.Sapre said ,
“Whatever I say will make no effect till the investors get their money back in their banks. We understand that.That’qs why we are working towards exactly that.”
The intentions and words are on track .But as Mr.Sapre said ,they need to walk the talk and that’s where this bit of news is definitely on the right track.
But nothing like that happens easily. The right to wind up the funds were challenged in court and now the Supreme Court has given the go ahead to organize the e-voting. The first step to formally wind up is notify the unit holder about voting .
Must know Facts about the Evoting
- Voting will happen online.Evoting dates 26-28 December (timing Indian standard time).
- Unitholder meeting on 29th December :Video conference.
- The second unit holder video meeting will only be for those fund owners where the majority vote is yes vote.
- Information sent online through the registered phone number or email address for the unitholder.
- One fund one vote
- You can vote yes or no
- If you are not able to vote its a null vote and not counted in anyways.
- Simple majority means more than half (50%) of votes cast will determine voting results.

Cooking Red Spinach|Lal Saag :Do short videos on YouTube work? This was a question I had. Inspired by what I was hearing,I started with my case study.
Red spinach or lal saag is a favorite at home.When it’s cooked with the right amount of garlic you can polish of a plateful if rice without wanting any other thing.
The recipe is simple.
Ingredients for lal saag/Red spinach recipe are:
Red spinach,grlic,green chillies,tomatoes, turmeric,salt.I use mustard oil for these typical Bengali recipes.
Steps:After heating oil water till its colour clears before adding the red chillies,garlic.Saute till golden then add the red spinach and the rest of the ingredients.Now stir.

Details will be available only after I collect more data.Short video is a format which seems to be growing very popular.Like on Tangi ,I love seeing food video and art videos.But other genres I am not sure. This post highlights video content as a part of the create cornerstone content challenge.

Why You Shouldn’t self medicate( #Podcast)
What is self-medication? When you self administers treatment for physical or mental conditions, that’s self-medication.
What happens when parents medicate their kids using OTC (over the counter) drugs or refill an old prescription without consulting?
- The child gets better-Best scenario.
- The child gets better, and the symptoms recur after a few days-commonest cases.
- Symptoms get worse- often enough to be a cause for concern.
- A constant worry for parents.
What are you supposed to do when it’s late, you or your child have an earache and you can’t visit a clinic?
For Ear nose throat -What you should(not) do is what I will talk about today. A few incidents to give the background behind this post.
Case 1 :The case of the mixed up prescription
One of my patients mommy today told me about how her two year-old girls’ ears were aching since five days and started discharging blood mixed with pus .The child was having a cold for a week now and the mommy started an antibiotic prescribed from another doctor’s (one year) old prescription .Mommy also used my one year old prescription to buy the ear drop.
None of the previous prescriptions were available.The antibiotic was named but not the ear drop.Surprisingly common behavior. Read about acute otitis media here .
(For the sake of privacy personal details are not mentioned. )
Case 2 Thinking all ear drop are created equal
I had prescribed an ear drop for ear wax, 6 months back.Some of the drop was left.
The parent applied the same ear drop six months later, for a sudden earache.Me speechless.Again no prescription.
In both these cases the child was in severe pain.
Case 3 Nasal Spray Addiction
Mommy had a stuffy nose. She was using OTC nose drops for many years.Child has a stuffy nose, mom starts giving the child the same adult nose drop. Mother has rebound aggravation and the child suffers too.
This condition is called Rhinitis medicamentosa. When nose problems get worse by self-medication and overuse of OTC nose drops.
It’s a rebound nasal stuffiness most often due to OTC vasoconstriction(blood vessels are contracted) nasal drops.Its also known as Nasal spray addiction.
One of the common nose drop which is used for self medication is xymetazoline or oxymetazoline drops like Otrivin,Xylomist,Diconal etc.
So are these nasal drops like Otrivin safe to use?
When you use products like these as an adult,for two or three days within prescribed limits , its safe enough.But overuse,abuse ,excessive dosage and using on kids are never safe.
What happens if you use Otrivin for more than seven days ?Any side effects?
The problem of nasal blockage and feeling stuffy increases and worsening of nasal mucosa swelling.You may have feelings of anxiety irritability ,dryness of nose ,dryness of the back of throat ,sudden racing of heart,palpitations, difficulty sleeping,sudden mood swings ,sudden tremors and more .
Is it safe to use Nasal sprays instead of nose drops?
It depends on the product used.If its a normal saline spray its unlikely to be a problem.But all medicated products need to be taken after consultation with your doctor .
What could be behind self-medication and parents medicating their kids without medical consultation?
The reasons are multiple and multifactorial. As parents, you and I want to help our kids the best we can. With online healthcare access, many such problems at odd hours may be helped.
The problem of random self medication is worrying but when it’s your kid you need to be triple-y sure .
Few things to remember about self-medication problems
Never use ear drops,nose drops, eye drops ,ointments after expiry date.
Always use them within one month of opening to avoid problems .
Never self Medicate when it’s your sense organs, the harm could be permanent.
Never self Medicate when it’s your kid.
Never reuse your old prescription or that of your family members. Any pain which keeps you awake is serious .
Even OTC drugs, nutritional supplements can cause trouble. Side effects, complications, and drug reactions all occur when taken alone or in combination with prescription drugs.
Any condition persisting beyond two days in kids need check up.
Anything which doesn’t get better within 2 weeks will need a workup.
If you have a pre existing condition, always know when you should follow up.
Get Teleconsultation done if unable to visit in person.
Diabetes makes all infections worse,so take good care of your blood sugar.

AnyBooks App:Your own (mobile)Library!
Update August 2021:I bought the paid Anybooks app in July 2020.A year later in June 2021 the app looked abandoned.The server wouldn’t connect to download new books.But luckily the books already downloaded could be read.The search function was not working.The app was removed from Google play and a Google search showed the app page with many such complaints and a unresponsive site owner.
Both my sister and I had bought the premium version of the app and we were heartbroken.Theres no way you can catch these people.Now there’s another similar app on the Google play store which urges you to buy it.Be careful about what you pay for.A lifetime validity often means lifetime of that version of the app!
Do you want your own mobile library? Do you want it on your phone without shutting down your phone?
Before the App disappeared …
Yes, you can with the Anybooks app. If you are a reader you will love this post. Once upon a time, I found the Any books app in the Google play store. It was wonderful with an outstanding collection of books to read. Since it was a Google play store app, I trusted it. My life has never been the same. That app can be your own mobile library!
But no good can survive free forever. It’s not sustainable. Lightning struck. The developers had to make money. The app became paid.
I was so sad ,that for a few days I didn’t know what to do.It had my entire reading list for the next fifty years(atleast)!But the worst was yet to come.
My sister and I were desperately avoiding updatng the app to prevent loss of the books on our book shelves.
Sense returned.We knew there was a way.We each bought a subscription to the Anybooks App .It was a one time subscription and has the most outstanding collection of books I have ever seen.
If I have to buy that many books ,I would need a small country to keep them.But with the Any book App its as easy as 1,2,3.
Since its a one time low cost ,you save money every time you don’t buy a book!Imagine gifting this app subscription for Christmas to a reader?
I can guarantee their happiness.
So is Anybooks app Legit?
I assume, if Google play has their app it is legit. But do your own checking just to be sure.
Does it have all the world’s books?
Well I think its doing a good job of keeping a massive number of English language books .
What languages are available?
It’s English books only.
Is it fiction or non fiction?
Both kinds.
Do you get new books?
Yes all the time.
Can you download books?
Yes but only in the app.I didn’t find any way of downloading to any other device.
Is it a one-time payment?
Yes it is now .But companies have their own T and C updates.
What about highlighting features?
Its available.
Any other free book resources?

Today I was asked to write content that helps you save money. Any books App does just that. I can’t buy all the books in the world.I can’t carry all my books when I travel. But with this app on my phone, I have a library anywhere, even without wifi.

What happens when you use a hearing aid? What do you think happens?
You start hearing better. You have improved directional hearing. When you hear better, your nerves feel happy getting the sound energy.
Sound energy is like nutrition for your ears. When the amplified sound reaches the neurons, their disuse atrophy is stopped. The less you use the less you will be able to use.
When there is sensorineural hearing loss the first thing to do is find the cause but you also need to amplify hearing and protect the ears.

Tests which your doctor may suggest are
PTA: Pure Tone audiometry
Tympanometry
BERA: Brain stem Evoked Response Audiometry
SISI: Short Increment sensitivity index
TDT: Tone Decay test
In case of asymmetrical hearing loss in one ear, we also need to do an MRI CPA(Cerebello Pontine Angle) to rule out a vestibular schwannoma
Routine blood tests to rule out DM /Hypothyroidism is important.
Recent reports suggest old age use of a hearing aid reduces dementia, depression in the elderly. Geriatric hearing loss is often multidimensional. While prevention is important, support and rehabilitation go a long way in improving quality of life.
Now, what happens when people don’t use a hearing aid or stop using one?
The hearing loss may deteriorate. A regular follow-up is needed to see if hearing loss is increasing with time.
There may be a sudden appearance of a ringing sound in the ear.
Can hearing aid improve balance?
Yes, they can. Disturbances of balance may occur depending on the severity of hearing loss and the hearing in another ear.
The direction of sound is difficult to understand in noisy surroundings.
People in occupations requiring good bilateral, hearing will need reassignment of responsibility.
When hearing loss is bilateral and affects the quality of life, a disability certificate helps in getting social and professional help. Disability certification requires a visit to a Government Medical College with a board giving such valid certificates.
All such people need help, treatment, and social support. If only one ear is affected, all possible care should be taken to avoid noise trauma to the other ear. Other than a hearing aid, a cochlear implant can also help in restoring hearing. But that’s part of another post.
Avoiding smoking, alcohol, and other addictive substances abuse is recommended for better nerve health. Are you taking care of your hearing?
