Company of One makes sense. I read the book, Company of One by Paul Jarvis, the kindle version.  I also read another book by the author.  Both times, I was happy to have found his books. 

Global expansion and dominance are not everyone’s goal.

If you are someone who wants to create a beautiful life and a business around it, the wisdom in this book will help you ask the right questions. This helped me decide about the business I didn’t want to start.

There’s something beautiful about learning something new, totally out of your comfort zone.  It’s also a great way to keep your brain young. But one important thing it must do is give you happiness.  If that doesn’t happen then you to rethink. You also should avoid shaving the yak syndrome.

Very few things worth doing, which makes you money, will be easy. The clue to finding the right thing to do is seeing both the pros cons and ten different things that can go wrong. If after all that, it still makes you feel a strange kind of peace, then test it.  Think back to all the times when your decision took a life of its own and then things fell into place. How did you feel then?

Not what everyone tells you.  No one’s life and aspirations are the same, but this book may help you pinpoint yours.

I was thinking about what to write on this Republic Day. Then I started wondering about what I am loving about India today? That are things which are rays of sunlight? What bits of news makes me smile? What are the schemes which need talking about?

I  grew up in a middle-class Bengali household with both parents working. I appreciated the value of being an Indian. What I always felt was a lack of awareness about Government welfare schemes, scholarships, and support for the backward. It was not a question of good intent. It was more a question of awareness. In this digital world, information is still easier to get. But the people who need it most are often unaware. They can’t read or write. If they have a smartphone they are probably watching viral videos on Facebook.

So how will this post of mine help? Maybe you, my dear readers, when you know more you can help make aware one person each. Will that helps?Maybe yes, maybe no.

We don’t know what the future holds for our beautiful Mother India. When Dr.Ambedkar wrote the longest constitution in the world, he didn’t know either.

Dr.B. R. Ambedkar wrote it in Hindi and English and our constitution has  448 articles. It took him two years and 11 months to draft the constitution. It has the best parts of all the other countries. The concept of Liberty, equality, and fraternity came from the French constitution.

The Indian Republic is outstanding. The founding fathers took care to give all its citizens the best that India can offer. I feel blessed to be an Indian. The only country where whatever the status there are Goddesses to pray to. Tell me about another country where the countrymen worship women power?

If my blog had a theme song it would be, I’m alive!

I think that about sums it up.  My blog makes me feel alive. When I am not feeling very inspired,  I write.  When I feel sad, I write when I want to rant and rave, I write. The best part is, it has prevented me from blowing up in front of people and short-circuiting relationships.

That never helps. Writing and blogging are two very different things. Some days I write and I don’t publish on my blog, because it’s just not meant for public viewing. Writing I feel, makes people more honest and real. It gives a direct dialogue with your inner self. Writers are probably some of the few people who can say, they are working when they daydream. At least that’s what I say!

The truth is I am actually thinking about something I saw or read or felt when I have a glazed expression. If you are a parent you know that’s not something you want your child to learn, when they sit down to study. So I have to balance the fine line between being a Doctor mommy and a creative mommy and be true to both.

On the good days, I give myself a five star. On the not so good days, I am double checking my own brain. Some days are like that. But that’s where writing helps. It helps my brain connect to the real world better. It’s almost like writing words help in understanding my own self.

I think I could fly , that’s what my blog makes me believe!

If I am not reading or writing, I like to trim my plants or potter around the home.  The last one is a distant third. But when I blog I feel alive!

Next year I will try again. But till then dear reader, this is for you.

Darling daughter, I hope one day you will read this. One day you will know how you changed my life. One day you will know all your mom’s secrets. But today I will share my 5 secrets which helped me become who I am today.


I was a dreamer. A daydreamer, night dreamer, train and bus dreamer. I could dream anywhere. I also loved planning my dreams. That was much before I knew that planned dreaming is like action blueprints, with many fancy names. I read in a Russian fairy tale book(in Bengali).

Roughly translated it means:

Your brain will work better once the night is over!

I always thought it had something to do with dreams. Everything seems better after a good night’s rest.

Secret 1: Keep dreaming.But not in the classroom

I was an average student till I was in class seven . I did well in some and okay in others. But something changed after that. Without boring you with the details I will say this. I realized life getting better or not, depended a lot on my own choices. Once I stopped thinking I was the victim of circumstances I had control. Control over how much I studied, how I studied, why I studied. This was life-changing. After this, there was no looking back. I don’t remember my mother ever nagged me to study. I don’t want to either. So please study darling

I had no plans of getting married until it was a romantic and kind prince, who could be braver than me, smarter than me(just a tiny bit). He also had to love books, plants, babies, traveling. We don’t have gender-differentiated roles at home. You will know what I am talking about when you grow a little older.

Secret 3: Marry with care. Choose your spouse well. You spend more than half your life with him so he needs to be a friend.

Take care of your spirit. Never think you are a victim of circumstances.P ray, keep a habit of writing thank you note. It will help. Saying thank you and being grateful, helps you attract all the goodness of the universe toward you. How wonderful is that?

Secret 4: Practice thankfulness and Pray always. Faith is the biggest source of happiness.

Persist. Always. If there is one quality I want you to practice is persistence and perseverance.

You have to persist and do what you have to do, what you have to. What happens is destiny!

Secret 5 Persist and persevere.

I have a Bonus secret 6 for you! Have grace. Even if things don’t go according to your wish. Maybe the wish was not for your best.B both failure and success must be gratefully accepted. Because both teach us.

Do remember I always will love you. Wherever I am, I will be watching, listening and feeling all your emotions. Be a brave girl. Grow strong with each tear you shed and every smile you share.

You are my happiness and light and you came to this world because your parents loved you dearly, even before you were born.

Top 13 ways to Study better and Do great in exams

My first board exams meant I studied almost 16 hours a day. That helped create the kind of discipline for later in my life as a Doctor. Teachers and parents all have a big role to play when it comes to exam revision and results. That’s where I feel, many people struggle.

If you were scared of exams, you may invariably relay that stress top your child.

I am going through a period so picnicitis. That’s not a real word but one we made up today after going for our fourth picnic this month. December was busy with family weddings and travel and January were mixed with class tests and weekend picnics.  One such spontaneous family picnic happened today and I was at the receiving end of current best practices for doing well in exams.

Disclaimer: This is a fictitious conversation, where any resemblance to people you know is purely coincidental.

A mommy was telling me, how she and her son was staying up till 2 am, to revise well. I politely asked what happened during the day?

Mrs.X answered : “home tutors come from 10 am onwards till late in the evening. The young boy preparing for his board exams, had little time to study except at night.

In a day of 24 hours, eight-hour sleep is essential to do your best. So that leaves behind16 hours. At least 2 to 3 hours of which you will need for your daily necessary relaxation and meals.

You have 12 to 13 hours for completing your to-do list every day.
So how to study before exams, so that you cover all subjects and do well?

Top 13 ways to Study better and Do great in exams

Divide the 13 hours into slots depending on how many subjects you want to cover and how difficult they are. Keep at least two to three hours every day for going through mock test pares and previous years’ exam questions.  Time yourself while you go through the mock papers

The subject which is most scoring should be practiced daily.

The subject which needs work may need more time but be careful not to spend all your morning o  it /Its best to get a major chunk of learning done in the morning until before lunchtime.

After lunch relax for some time and start solving test papers to help top get rid of the post-lunch lazy feeling In the evening a quick snack and a few minutes of relaxation can be taken.

Make revision charts for maths formulas, tables.

Science diagrams, flowcharts and difficult to remember topics.

Anything which is repeatedly forgotten needs to be jotted down in a special diary for repeated perusal.

Know your strengths and weaknesses.

Now make a plan for the last month of revision.

Plan for one-week full revision just before the boards start.

Plan for daily revision just before the exam.

Make your strengths stronger and weak subjects better for the best result.

Spend some time exercising or going for walks. Eat a balanced nutritious diet and don’t forget to stay hydrated, pray and do your best.

New #Coronavirus outbreak: What you need to know #nCoV2019

The New Coronavirus attack sneaked up on the world. On 31st December 2019 when the world was busy celebrating the coming new year, a cluster of Pneumonia broke out in Wuhan China.

But the first case was apparently detected on 17th November 2019.The whistle blower doctor was one of the first to succumb to the disease.The Chinese authorities had left no stones unturned to stop information. In fact over the next several months they actively spread misinformation .

They even kept WHO in the dark.When the world wanted to stop people from traveling to China ,they talked about racism.The damage was already done though and Italy payed the price of the famous “hug me ” campaign.

700 people in 2002 and 2003 had died of SARS in China. The new Coronavirus is suspected to be of the same family.

India has suspended all visas till the 15th of April.The USA bans all travel from European union except the UK.

Many national and private carriers are suspending flights to and from China.

Indigo and Air India have announced the suspension.

Others include British Airways, Indonesian’ s Lion Air Group, Cathay Pacific, United Airlines,.Air Canada.Many citing lower demand due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

As on 3rd February 2020,, India has suspended all previously approved e visas for travel to and from China.

What India is doing?

Three confirmed New Coronavirus patients are reported in Kerala as on 3.02.2020.

India has brought back its 323 citizens & 7 Maldivians stranded in China. They are currently in quarantine according to risk levels.

India has started thermal screening for fever at 7 airports currently. More may be added to the list.

Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin.

As of 26.01.2020 21 airports have thermal screening of passengers.

Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Coimbatore, Guwahati, Gaya, Bagdogra, Jaipur, Lucknow, Trivandrum, Tiruchi, Varanasi, Vishakhapatnam are some more airports were advisory will be seen.

The Union Health Ministry has asked people to use Helpline 24/7 011-23978046 for queries related to respiratory infections.(Source the Statesman)

Any flight or connecting flight coming from China including Hong Kong will have in-flight announcements requesting, passengers to self-declare at the port of arrival.

 If they have a history of fever, cough, cold and travel history to affected region contact with the affected person. Forms may need to be filled up and airline staff would have to guide them as well as airport signage will be placed prominently to help those who need.

06/03/2020: The government now starts universal screening for all passengers flying into India from abroad.

11/03/2020: WHO declares the COVID19 as a pandemic.Interesting that initially WHO was saying the exact opposite.When it comes to China everyone seems to be fighting a shadow war.

Chinese officials have advised against traveling to Wuhan. But with the Chinese New Year coming many will be traveling, to visit their families and that could be a problem in containing the outbreak. Close space contact like during train or air travel can cause the rapid spread of the virus.

Symptoms of New Coronavirus infection as mentioned by WHO

  • Asymptomatic to Mild to moderate upper respiratory tract illness, like a common cold.
  • Fever -98%
  • Cough-76%
  • Myalgia /fatigue -44%
  • Hyposmia/anosmia unable to smell
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath and breathing difficulties-55%
  • Severe cases: pneumonia, acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.
  • Other symptoms updated by CDC (updated on this blog June 2020)-skin rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

This study reviewing scientific studies in 148 countries found persistent cough and fever is the classic symptom of COVID 19. Other major symptoms include fatigue, reduced smell sensation, breathing difficulty.

Of the 24,410 cases, the study found:

78 percent had a fever. vary across countries. ( 72 percent of fever reported by patients in Singapore and 32 percent in Korea.
57 percent had a cough. Varying across countries,76 percent of patients reporting a cough in the Netherlands while only 18 percent in Korea.
31 percent fatigue.
25 percent -lost the ability to smell.
23 percent – difficulty breathing.

Mortality rate of 2019-nCoV infection is around 3%

Transmission of the Novel Corona Virus 2019-NCoV

TRANSMISSION RATE (Ro) :2 – 3
(2 – 3 newly infected from 1 case)

It is highly infectious and transmittable during the incubation phase ranging from 2 days to two weeks.

Animals and people transmit coronaviruses.

 It’s a zoonosis, so most likely initial point of contact was an animal. But now the new Coronavirus from China can spread by human contact has been confirmed by reports. In one instance, 14 doctors and nurses operating on a patient unknown to be infected were all affected(source). This makes the possibility of the virus spreading easily likely.

It is suspected to spread through the aerosols from respiratory tract But the exact modes of transmission are still under research.

The Wuhan strain is suspected to have links to a city market selling seafood and live animals including wild species. SARS has a similar history of relation to the transmission through a city market selling, Civet cat a delicacy in some parts of China.

Its spread through fomites, human to human and aersol transmission is confirmed.

A South China post reports about evidence regarding aerosol transmission of the virus.These droplets are less than 5micrometers in diameter and could be cause for concern.

Study was done by researchers from University of Nebraska Medical Centre, National Strategic Research Institute at the University of Nebraska.They collected air samples from 11 rooms where 13 confirmed cases of #COVID19 were being treated.

Viral genetic material was found both inside (63.2%) and outside the rooms (66.7%).The highest concentration was at 2 meters from the patient inhaling oxygen through nasal tube.

What is the Diagnostic test for 2019-nCoV

Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR)assay is the test being done by CDC in the USA.

No specific antiviral treatment is recommended yet for 2019-nCoV infection.

Supportive treatment for cold, steam inhalation and gargling could help. Application of PVP-I with 0.23–1% concentration, for 1–2 min reduced SARS-CoV virus infectivity from 1.17 × 106 TCID50/ml to below detectable levels in a study by Kariwa et al. Studies for shorter contact times are not available.

Fluids, rest and sleep are very important for preventing complications

Symptomatic supportive treatment for respiratory and other vital organ functions are often the mainstays of treatment.

In India,Rajasthan ,treatment with a combination of a certain antimalarial and anti- retroviral drugs have good result.

Vaccine trial has started in USA

Washington: A clinical trial has started with a vaccine designed to protect against the new coronavirus on 17/03/2020 .
The National Institutes of Health is funding the trial.It is taking place at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle.

The New Coronavirus COVID 19, CCP virus Wuhan virus, SARS COVID 2 -the names of this virus are as many as the number of entities making a vaccine for it.
Probably more of the latter. The good news so far is
Oxford University started the vaccine human trial in April 2020 and our very own Serum institute Pune is ready to roll production of this vaccine by September.

Covaxine by Bharat Biotech also has potential to be India’s first COVID-19 vaccine by Hyderabad’s Bharat Biotech.It has been given DCGI clearance for human trials.(Updated 30/06/2020).This is India’s first indigenous anti COVID19 vaccine.This was developed in collaboration with ICMR and NIV.The official release says the vaccine has shown an effective immunological response and safety.

Many other COVID vaccines are being developed by various other Indian company and Internationally in collaborations across the globe.

The article in Lancet about the Hydroxychloroquine controversy has several study bias. Most importantly its an observational study and secondly it’s funded by pharma giants producing more expensive treatment protocols for COVID 19 treatment. Under all circumstances, both treatment and vaccine trials should strictly follow a transparent disclosure policy regarding funding and bias if any.

The Lancet paper has also made WHO stop the HCQ study .The paper was funded by all other trial drugs which is a direct conflict of interest in this case.It was not published by people who use the medicine,that looks like a bias.The Paper was then retracted.

This pandemic has made biological threats a present day problem.

The virus keeps mutating and you need a yearly shot like the Influenza /Flu vaccine. The mutating capacity of this virus is an unknown quantity

How can you prevent infection and overwhelm by COVID19?

How to Prevent Corona Virus infection and Overwhelm?

  1. Avoiding  close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections;

  2. Practice frequent hand-washing and cough etiquette.Hand washing the WHO way is useful for at least 20 seconds. Use soap and water for handwashing and an alcohol-based sanitizer if soap not available.

    Soap and water are best.

  3. Avoid touching face, eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

  4. Coverup with tissues when you cough or sneeze and dispose it properly afterward.

  5. Frequently used objects and surfaces need to be disinfected regularly.

  6. Wearing an appropriate surgical mask is recommended, and protective gear as available should be used in the presence of known cases of 2019-nCoV.But panicked overstocking will not help anyone.

    It’s better the case who is affected offered the mask first, to avoid the spread of infection.Wearing a mask may protect against inadvertent touching of face eyes, nose and other mucosal surfaces which causes virus transmission,

  7. Strictly avoid close contact with alive or dead farm or wild animals. Avoid visiting slaughterhouses. Avoid touching surfaces in slaughterhouses and raw flesh, blood of animals.

  8. Older travelers and those with underlying health issues may be at higher risk

  9. If you traveled to Wuhan or any of the affected regions or have been in contact with a sick person, and feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, you should visit your nearest healthcare facility.  Informing about your recent travel in advance can be useful.  Use a mask to prevent transmission at all times.

  10. Don’t travel while sick. Avoid going to the office or sending children to school if they are having a fever.

  11. Maintain social distancing

    Atleast 3- 6 feet distance to be maintained to avoid contracting infection.

  12. Spitting in public is a healthcare hazard

    Don’t spit in public .Avoid paan ,tobacco,gutkha chewing habits as they make you hypersalivate and spit.

  13. Self Quarantine strictly if in home quarantine.

    Read my post and follow the tips.But in case you don’t have access to a seperate room,its best you stay in a Government quaramtine facility.

  14. Don’t forget routine immunizations for kids

What we know about Coronavirus attacks

Coronaviruses are a  family of respiratory RNA viruses.  They have a crown-like appearance and can infect a wide variety of animals.  They are responsible for  10-35 % of common cold depending on the season like late fall, winter, early spring.  They cause diseases ranging from the common cold to the Middle-East Respiratory Syndrome and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). 

The novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is in the same family of infections as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). It shares an 80% genetic similarity with SARS CoV. Its most closely related to a bat virus and therein lies the catch!

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or the MERS virus, reported in 2012 in the middle East. It causes severe respiratory symptoms.  According to CDC four out of every 10 patients infected with MERS died.  Trials for a MERS vaccine are also underway. Unlike SARS, isolated cases of MERS are often heard.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome,  commonly known as SARS.  First identified in the Guangdong in south China.  According to  WHO, it causes respiratory problems, diarrhea, fatigue, shortness of breath, respiratory distress and kidney failure.  Depending on the patient’s age, the death rate with SARS ranged from 0-50% of the cases, with older people being the most vulnerable.

Allergic Rhinitis and COVID 19 difference.

Allergic Rhinitis and Allergic Pharyngitis will have a predominant complaint of itching of nose, throat, sneezing but no fever. It is not contagious. They will have a previous history of allergy of the same or different type. They will usually have a family history of allergy.

COVID19 will usually have fever.A persistent cough and fever are the most common symptoms Other major symptoms are fatigue, losing the ability to smell and difficulty breathing.

But there are also reports of afebrile and asymptomatic cases of COVID19.

About Rapid Antigen Test

The Corona virus has several protein molecule on its surface as antigens.When a nasopharyngeal swabs is applied on a test kit (it’s  a paper strip with antibody layer ,enclosed in a plastic),there is a visual representation of the antigen and antibody complex, if antigen is present in certain amount.

Takes around 30 minutes for the reagent

The antigens are expressed when the virus is multiplying. Thus best for acute infection

Pros of the test:

Cheaper.Doesn’t need sophisticated set up .

When higher viral load if the Rapid test says positive ,it means positive.

Cons:

According to most guidelines it will be used in containment zones or hotspots and hospital settings only.

Reliability depends on kit quality,handling and temperature at storage and use .

Those who test positive are considered positive 

Those who test negative needs a sequential RT PCR to rule out COVID 19.

FDA Authorizes First COVID-19 Test for Self-Testing at Home (Update 17th November 2020)

The Lucira COVID-19  is an All-In-One Test Kit test. Its  been authorized for home use with self-collected nasal swab samples in individuals age 14 and older who are suspected of COVID-19 by their health care provider.But it now has limited availability and can only be accessed with  health care provider referral.
