Rota virus vaccine…do your children need it?
It’s important to understand that vaccines and vaccination schedules in India are evaluated by national bodies by Indian Academy of Pediatricians and some are included in the national schedule compulsorily.
The compulsory vaccines are made so after proper research, epidemiological data and necessary clearance. All vaccination schedules should be discussed with your Doctor.
As an undergraduate medical student, I explored the world of vaccines. But when it came to writing about them I relied heavily on the information provided by my hubby the pediatrician(I only provide research-backed information). While vaccination is a very important topic, its also prone to controversies and doubts.
My husband Dr.Abhijit Misra, the man behind this mompreneur is passionate about helping parents and writes the necessary drafts for all articles needing his expertise. All the articles dealing with child health and, immunizations happen after I have completed picking his brain in detail.
What is vaccination?
Vaccination is the process by which a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease by giving a vaccine. A vaccine helps the bodies defense system or immunity to get activated and ready for future infection or disease. Its one way of priming the immune system.
What happens when you give a vaccine?
When a vaccine is given, the pathogen or part of the pathogen excites the body’s immune system to recognize it as harmful. It then stores this information in its memory. In case there is an attack by the same pathogen, the body’s immune system remembers and starts an attack quickly on the disease-causing agent.
What about natural immunity?
Natural immunity works for some diseases for some though the mortality and morbidity of the infection and disease need prevention.
Why immunization?
Immunization is an excellent healthcare tool for controlling and eliminating life-threatening infections. It prevents millions of deaths year after year. Its a cost-effective way of prevention of disease, mortality, and disability. It is a cost-effective preventive tool and valuable health investment. With the right strategies and outreach, the most vulnerable target population is given access to vaccination for better health. The best part, it needs no lifestyle change for it to be effective.
Where can you vaccinate your child in India?
- In all Government hospitals (Free) Get the complete list here.
- In most Private Hospitals having Mother and child Healthcare facility.
- At the Red Cross
- By several other NGOs in association with Government machinery.
- At Child Health Clinics

Ear Problems and Solutions
Ear problems and solutions for them are a series of posts aimed at providing help for common ear diseases. As an ENT Surgeon, I face questions about ear infections, problems with hearing, itching of ear dizziness, ringing in ear discharge, and many others.
Through this series of posts, I plan to do all I can to help.
Many causes of an earache make a diagnosis without examination almost impossible. Children especially often complain of an earache. As a parent, you face tremendous challenges to give relief and support to your family during these times.
Impossible to actually write about all the ear problems in an easily digestible language, without it becoming a science lecture. But what’s there in life except attempting the impossible? So here goes. These are the first two posts in the series of ear problems. Write to me at healthwealthbridge@gmail.com for any queries. Remember to always contact an ear specialist when your problem is persistent.
Unlike other body parts, you really can’t look into your own ear or that of your loved ones without specialized instruments. Did you know there is a condition like an aeroplane ear or barotrauma?

GERD: Reflux Guide
What is GERD?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD is the medical term for the common problem of Reflux.
So GERD would be: Occasional Acidity? sometimes sour taste in mouth? A burning sensation in the stomach, chest, throat. Reflux or regurgitation of food with sour taste and burning Sensation?
GERD is all these and some more.
GERD Stats
Acid reflux may be affecting up to 40% of Americans and 10% Indians. Money spent for over the counter and prescription drugs is as high as 10 billion dollars per year, in America alone. What would you do with 10 billion dollars?
Why does GERD occur?
Transient Lower esophageal sphincter relaxation is a normal phenomenon. Secretion of acid in the stomach to digest food is normal. Some amount of backflow of this acid from the stomach into the food pipe happens in all of us.
When there occurs frequent regurgitation of acidic stomach content into the food pipe or esophagus, due to prolonged or frequent LES relaxation, that’s when it’s GERD.
Severity of GERD determined by:
1)Dysfunctional antireflux barrier:A normal antireflux barrier helps to prevent reflux of gastric contents. When this mechanism is not working properly reflux occurs.
2)Impaired esophageal clearance:
3) Anatomical variation of Esophago- gastric junction including hiatus hernia
How do to know if I am at risk of GERD?
You may be at risk of Reflux disorders if :
- Older age
- Nonvegetarian diet
- Your diet is high in fried food/fatty food
- Aerated drinks
- Tea/coffee
- Alcohol
- Smoking
- Too little sleep
- No exercise

What is Silent reflux/LPRD
Laryngitis is a symptom of silent reflux and you may typically have no complaint of reflux but may be persistently hoarse.Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease or LPRD as it is popularly known ,has a chronic course and sequelae. It occurs due to regurgitation of acid
Do Children have GERD?
Yes
Medical treatment in children is a detailed article on this topic .But you definitely don’t like making your child have medicines. The best option then is in your hands.
Lifestyle habits are very important for children to live life reflux free.
Lifestyle :to get rid of GERD/reflux
Quick tips for making your child reflux free
1)Don’t have those food which cause acidity , in front of children( preferably don’t have them).
2) For older children try to make them understand that the discomfort due to acidity is due to those particular food, that often helps cut down tantrums.
3) If they still insist , control the amount which they can have, lesser the better.
4) Make them avoid these food at bedtime as lying down will make acid reflux worse. Bedtime should be atleast 3 hours after meals.
5) Eat healthier as a family and not just for the child.
6)Make a habit of drinking plenty of water
7) Avoid spicy food as they generally make acidity worse
8) Make the bedtime at least 2/3 hours after a main meal. Dinner time should be early to avoid lying down with a full stomach.
9) If the baby drinks milk at bedtime , try to gradually replace the calories from milk with semisolid or solid food earlier in the evening.A satisfied child who has a full stomach , is more likely to listen to reason than a hungry crabby child.
