One thing in the world I want to change is also the stupidest thing people say and do which they are 100% serious about is, “we are cutting down these trees and planting these beautiful saplings for each of them” .
Imagine that? Replacing fully grown shade-giving trees with baby plants. In the case of an adult mango tree, it will take approximately twenty years to reach those dimensions.
Adult trees have deep interconnected root systems which help to hold soil in place, prevent erosion, and floods, and maintain good soil bacteria. They also produce enormous quantities of oxygen which obviously a baby plant can’t produce. Trees support an entire ecosystem of birds, bees, and other animal life which won’t be possible with a baby plant.
The Red Sequoia redwood trees last 3000 years. Sequoia sempervirens are also found in the Indian subcontinent in the Western and Eastern ghats. They can grow up to three hundred feet. The mango tree grows up to 130 feet and can live, and bear fruits for three hundred years. I am lucky that I am able to enjoy the shade of mango trees.
Old trees store more carbon than young ones. They give more oxygen, they give more shade and give more shelter. In this world where technology helps us reach, the moon and Mars why can’t Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mukesh Ambani find ways to save the trees, not lose the forest and make development possible?
I want to make housing, development, possible without losing green cover.I want tree growing to be a part of citizen responsibility. Will planting fruit bearing trees and community vegetable gardens help with hunger problem?Community gardening and community parks can go a long way in helping share and grow green spaces.
Trees helped improve my health and brought wellness and creativity into my life.It didn’t happen suddenly. From 2014 to 2023 ,I have come a long way. From balcony garden to planting activities and our hopes of reforesting barren plots .It’s a journey both outside and inside.
If you want to live better ,do the hard thing .Work towards a greener world, wherever you are.
Is it going to be easy ?No.Is it possible?Yes.
