Unique gifts for the Gardener man took some thought.Men I feel can rarely be given gifts which they love.It’s not their fault, it’s not our fault.The fault lies in the stars who made men and women so different.But over the years we have found a few shared interests.Surprising ones like gardening, traveling, binge-watching television, relaxing like there’s no housework and just living life one day at a time.

My hubby grew up in a small village in West Bengal.The village has about 20 families living and is a quaint little hamlet in an untouched part of this world.

When he left home for higher studies he missed the flower gardens, the veggie patches and the Mango orchards in his backyard.We, fortunately, have a thriving balcony garden and grow a lot of flowers and greens.Trying our hand at fruits and veggies.So for the man in my life, I am listing a few unique gifts.

I have a plan for a fully automated self-watering vertical garden in my new home.But in this rented home, we still have the traditional balcony garden where my in-laws help by plant sitting when we travel.My hubby would love it if he could make it self watering the DIY way.There’s no harm in trying right?

 Composter: This one is something having specific requirements.It should be nonmessy.No smell, no worms(is that even possible )makes the process of waste management and compost making a breeze.In all honesty, the above criteria are mine, not his.But all  moms who are reading this know exactly what I am talking about

I don’t know whether it was in class seven or eight when I read an article about how to improve your own self.Hanging out with people who inspire you to be good, is the first important step.Peer pressure, in this case, can work miracles.I have a curious nature.Whatever is interesting, makes me want to explore more.The problem of random exploring has mixed results.It’s a lot of unnecessary drama, headache, and heartburn. The five and a half years of MBBS then 3 years of post-graduate studies then more studies for super specialization.Even if you stop after MBBS you will need to study constantly to keep updated.

Why ?because while anatomy and physiology basics remain same, diseases get more vicious and ways to combat them become newer and newer.So please be ready to read a lot, your entire life.

Battle self-doubt

While Life and death are in Gods’ hand you can never give up.But often you will have a tough choice between choosing the right thing, easy thing, difficult thing, what patient wants, and what the Government wants.Be sure that you can handle the pressure and do the right thing even if its the hardest.If you can handle life and death on the same day, you can cope with self-doubt.

Home is where the heart is.This I realized over the ten years of being married and living in seven houses
Every moment of my life is a chance to make a beautiful story.It’s also a chance to be  happier.

Three years back one day when I was morosely reading one blog after another I found the inspired room.net.That’s Melissa Michael’s blog and she was just getting ready to launch her new book.

Love the Home you have!

If phone screens could speak it spoke to me.I was part of her launch team and that book changed my life.

It made me realize that I was missing out on making my corner of this earth a cocoon, by fixating on an object.

A house is a shelter.A home is where you find peace, comfort, and happiness.While owning the shelter is always preferred, being a homeowner takes time and money.

While I started planning for the future house I made my current shelter a home.I made the balconies my little green spaces.

I made the window gardens, I made built-in look alike to get over the storage crisis.Got our rocking chair and just made life comfortable.

Thank you home for helping me be my most creative and happy place.

Stress is the New Killer Not Jason Bourne

I am a fan of  Matt Damon and the Bourne series.Both the books and the movie series are gripping , edge of the seat thrilling.

Unfortunately just like Bourne suffers amnesia you are at risk of every disease under the sun related to lifestyle if you have work or personal stress.

Stress is a silent killer and it not painless.Chronic and acute stress both are equally bad.While acute stress can help you adapt or get you killed.Chronic stress can cause all lifestyle diseases including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, insomnia, depression and more.

During acute stress, the flight or fight response helps us survive.It kick starts the Sympathetic pathways in our body.

While peaceful conditions stimulate parasympathetic pathway.

A little excitement feels good.This is momentary stimulation of your sympathetic response.That’s how you feel when fall in love!

But when this response is chronic (as in chronic stress at work or home)you suffer palpitations and anxiety attacks.Stress hormones are released during stressful situations and these are responsible for the long term and short term ill effects of high level of stress

What are these stress hormones?

Cortisol : The effects of high levels of cortisol is many folds. Cortisol influences a lot of the other endocrine glands too.Circulating cortisol and psychological stress have a direct correlation with childhood obesity, adult obesity, and metabolic syndrome.

Catecholamines increase makes your heart overworked.

Insulin decreases: This causes there to be a hyperglycaemic state and there is a high risk of Diabetes Mellitus.

TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone decreases.This can precipitate hyperthyroidism(more thyroid hormones in the blood).This has an effect on the heart and almost all systems of our body.

How do they affect you?

Chronic stress is first in the brain.

It makes you eat more, smoke more chance of addictive behavior, poor quality of sleep and low happiness quotient.Altogether these affect your lifestyle an long-term personal and professional life.

What should you do?

I wrote about 32 ways to beat chronic stress a long time back .but every day I try to do the following 5 things to feel good and relax.

  • I cuddle my baby a lot
  • I  water my plants and stare at them.
  • I walk every day on the treadmill at least for 60 minutes.
  • I read
  • I write

At the end of the day a life well lived should make you happy .If your health is not your best friend ,you cant be happy!What are you doing to be healthy, happy and stress-free?

Are you a blogger ?Do you have an email list?

I had a list.

Had to severely mutilate it , to get rid of unresponsive subscribers.I hear everywhere that growing the email subscriber list, is your real blog goal.They are the people who find you so awesome, that they sign up for your newsletter.

Yes I know it sounds like a dream.You make awesome products.Your wonderful subscribers can’t stop buying.

This can happen.But you have 3 problems to solve, before you reach that sweet spot.

1)How will you collect the emails?

In India which email service provider works .

Which allows NET banking (I don’t  have a credit card)

If you have a credit card, do you know, which are the really cool options?

2)Where will you place your sign up forms?

3)How will you make your raving readers become super subscribers?

This mompreneur’s blogging journey has been full of wonderful surprises.

But this pesky problem is making my hair grey.

The solution :

Break it down into nuggets.

How will you collect  emails?

Once upon a time in 2014 when I started blogging I had MailChimp as my email service provider.

MailChimp gives 2000 free subscriber plan, which is awesome.But the user interface didn’t make me comfortable. Plus the spam emails in my list made Mailchimp pretty mad.I was a green newbie and made uncool mistakes.

Next step Madmimi

Yes it’s called madmimi and it’s super cute.

The free plan allows up to 100 subscribers.

10 dollars per month.Basic plan.Payment by credit card only.No Indian version.My favorite platform but can’t use it.

It’s also mobile friendly.

Free plan present.
Monthly plans are affordable.

The user interfaces not very friendly.
Mobile use is very difficult.
Web forms are not pretty.
Convertkit
On my wishlist.
They often offer free first month.
Biggest problem:
Credit card needed, even for the free plan.What’s with that?
I really don’t get it.Obviously a very smart marketing plan.
That’s  a deal breaker for me.
  • A basic Indian version of email service.
  • Works on mobile.
  • NET banking possible.
  • FREE plan present.
  • The user interfaces easy.
  • Customization of webform possible.
  • List segregation and setting up Autoresponders easy.
  • Integration with Google analytics is present.
  • Captcha helps to clean up your list by automatically blocking spam.

Cons: It’s not as pretty as madmimi .
Many of my emails end up in the spam folder.Very poor  open rate (maybe I am doing something wrong )
I have been mailmarketer.in for the last 1 month.I have a list of 36 new people.Some of them are friends.
Now the question, is it good enough to help me build a  nice list?
 Because the money is not really in the list. The money happens,  when your subscribers love your work so much, that they wait eagerly to open your emails and take action.

Update: November 2017 

  • I am using madmimi for the last one year approximately and also using Google forms.
  • 30% open rate approximately.
  • I try to send a mix of my own contents and curated posts useful for my audience.
  • I am also checking out sendinblue!
