Kindle Create(Review):Your friendly Formatting Tool(video tutorial)

When I published my first book Fruits for Life there were issues with a lot of things. With every new thing I learned, I went back and updated the book. But the formatting for Kindle was not an easy topic. Now with the Kindle Create Software, you have Amazon Kindle holding your hands.

How to use Kindle Create

Just download Kindle create software on the laptop or desktop
Import the Microsoft Word Version of the book you want to format.
Choose a theme.
Choose the Table of content by selecting the chapters.
Then check the Title, Subtitle, etc
Font type and size
Proofread through the book as your format.
Save the formatted version for uploading as an ebook.

The best part: Using the same software you can format your paperback book too!

The only problem is, KDP does a print on demand from its Amazon.com site, making your Print on demand book expensive.

Kindle Create: All you need to know about it

Price: Free
Ease of Use: Very
Resources needed: Laptop or Desktop, mobile phone not supported.
Version: Both for Windows and Mac.
Skills needed: Ability to read instructions

Pros:

Free
Easy to use
Works seamlessly offline.
No complications
Saves time formatting, so that you can use the extra time for creating and polishing content.
You can format fiction or nonfiction, cartoons, kids books, cookbooks or travel books.
Several themes are available for selection
Formatting choices are adequate.
Table of content is easy to make
For the picture-heavy book, the pdf version will be needed to be imported into Kindle Create.

Cons:

Once you save it as the Kindle Kpf format you can’t mail it to your Kindle.
You can’t convert it into a pdf
You can’t make an epub or mobi copy. Your best bet is to save the Word file with bare bone formatting intact to share as Author Review copy and make Pdfs.
You cannot add links once you are in the Kindle create software.
If you find some lack of flow, you can’t add chapters in this software and you have first to go back to the word document->add chapters ->export the new word file to the Kindle Create and start from scratch!

Why do I still recommend Kindle Create?

I used to have nightmares about formatting. It took more time than everything else together and even then it didn’t look as good as I wanted it too. With the Kindle Create, that headache is gone.

It gives you a professional looking ebook, with simple uncluttered, uniform formatting according to your genre, with no pain as Amazon says Beautiful books every time!

Grammarly: Review of editing software

Once upon a time, I started writing. It was a lonely affair with no fairy Godmothers, nor readers. Then I met BlogchatterEbook festival, Grammarly and a few lovely bloggers who made the fairy tale come true.

I never stop talking about Blogchatter and you know why. But Grammarly I haven’t yet started.

What’s Grammarly?

It’s a fun software and a must have one for your writing resource. I was lucky to study in a Convent school. But English is my second language. I am not a native English speaker. Growing up I read everything that Enid Blyton,Agatha Christie, Satyajit Ray, Sandesh, Upendrakishore Ray, Bankimchandra, Saradindu, Rabindranath, just to name a few. Good books are the raw material which helps you learn to write. They train your mind to recognize flow, good style, and honest quality writing.

But to write well you need practice. Writing practice means writing every day.

But a necessary part of the art of writing is also good editing and for this, you and I both need help. That’s where editors come in. But should you send your books to the editor after the first draft? No way,unless you want to pay them on EMI, for the rest of your life.

A famous author said he never sends his book to the editor until he has edited it himself at least 20 times. That’s Jeffrey Archer’s advice I read in the Telegraph some time back.

So how do I edit?

In MS Word, there’s an edit option, but that’s limited. With the free Grammarly software as a Google Chrome extension and on Word, you can get tips on editing, sentence structure and more.

The paid Grammarly software unlocks a plethora of advice including emails to your inbox with specific grammar mistakes to look out for, in your writing. It not only helps you edit, but it also helps you learn grammar, one small step at a time.

The free version is free forever. It has basic grammar and sentence structure corrections and works great. I used it for three years and it was in 2017 that I upgraded to the paid plan.

Advanced checks for punctuation, grammar, context, and sentence structure. I needed this for my medical content writing
Tips for Vocabulary enhancement suggestions.
Writing styles can be checked according to the genre.

How to self edit as a writer?

For Blog posts

I try to edit my blog posts one day after I finish writing. Preview it, this helps to see the post with a fresh eye, tweak a little more and then publish for blog posts.

For books, it’s a little more detailed.

I try to write sections on some days and edit on others. I edit each section after writing 3/4 sections. Then edit once more after the book is written completely.
After this, I make a PDF copy and open it in a different browser.
Re-edit
If it’s a kindle book, after finishing edits on MS Word, I mail it to my Kindle account. Then I read it on Kindle.
Edit mistakes
Do I still make mistakes? Yes, a lot and all the time. But I try to keep trying. Is there a chance I will be an online grammar teacher? Unlikely. But I can definitely learn and write better.

If I write and edit at the same time, my eyes get glazed and I start skimming through without registering anything. That’s, why you need a fresh pair of eyes after all is done. An editor is important, but if you can’t afford one, then Grammarly will help.

While writing this post, I realized my journey this year will have two parts

The second part I will be keeping notes and just may turn out to be another book. I am sure the Blogchatter Book Review programme will help. When Amazon Prime picked up my Fruits for Life ebook for their promo, I knew this was the series which I would want to focus on. Guess why?

Because Amazon is the third most popular digital platforms in India where people buy, not just scroll.

Why do I write non-topical posts sometimes during A to Z?

When you submit your book for the Kindle Select programme, you can’t keep more than 10% of the content free on your blog. That creates some issues.

#4 What is the best way to handle the KDP Select issue?

Not sign up for KDP select . Just publish with KDP.
Keep some content extra for your book. Keep the research material and use it to create a richer experience with your ebook. A blog post doesn’t have the scope for extensive research material. But a book does.
Experiment with both and see what works for you.
Vlog your posts and write introductory posts for behind the scene activity. That way your written content stays in the book.
Sign up for KDP select and make the other posts password protected.

What do you have to lose?

When I self-published my first book, two years back I didn’t know what I was doing. But I knew what I like doing. That’s to write and share things I am passionate about.

I am also an ebook reader. Thats a rare population now. But few years down the line, things are bound to change. Ebook reading is easy and efficient with Kindle.

Self publish with the Blogchatter Ebook festival and use the opportunity to get a few book reviews from people who read. That way when you launch your book on Kindle. Google already has those book reviews in place and people can check it out before buying. Getting book reviews always help. But what about Book reviews on Amazon?

All the lovely people who review your book are usually kind enough to leave a short quick review on Amazon if you let them know when it’s available there.

But if no one buys my book after it’s free for two months at the ebook festival?

Don’t worry. First of all the ebook is a boost to your portfolio as a writer. There’s no way everyone would have downloaded it for free within the two months.

Second: Keep some additional content available. Add that to the book, when its to be uploaded on Amazon and promote it well. This works for nonfiction well.

For fiction refer to number one and see if you can make fun behind the scenes additional content.
