Himalaya Description

Himalaya Baby Lotion nourishes baby skin. It has Almond oil, licorice, olive oil, country mallow are the main ingredients. It’s free from parabens, mineral oil, and artificial colors. Himalaya Baby lotion is mild and keeps baby skin moisturized, supple, and skin.

Johnson’s Milk and Rice Lotion

Johnson’s milk and rice lotion has the goodness of milk proteins and hydrolyzed rice bran proteins. It’s pH-balanced hypoallergenic, enriched with many vitamins. It’s free from parabens, dyes, sulfates. It’s mild, and the brand promises soft skin for 24 hours.

But it contains mineral oil, fragrance, and alcohol, making it a tricky choice for many moms.

Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion

Aveeno stands out with its natural blend of oatmeal as the main ingredient. It’s light, hypoallergenic, affordable, and free from parabens, phthalates, fragrances, and dyes. It moisturizes well and soothes the skin.

Sebamed body lotion

Sebamed has a unique combination of emollients like sorbitol, chamomile, allantoin. These keep the baby’s delicate skin soft and well moisturized.

The major cons for me-Sebamed have several chemicals. The list includes artificial fragrance, sulfate, Benzyl alcohol. These chemicals can be potential triggers for skin irritation and allergy.

Cetaphil Best Baby Lotion – For Winter

Cetaphil has no colorant; it’s paraben-free and mineral oil-free. It contains calendula extract, marigold extract, almond oil, and sunflower oil. It’s more suitable for winter skincare.

But I am not fond of sunflower oil for skincare. It often doesn’t get absorbed into the skin and just sits on it.

Derma Dew

Derma Dew contains almond oil, shea butter, turmeric oil, vitamin E, liquid paraffin, lanolin, aloe vera. The moisturizing effect is good, keeping the baby’s soft skin well hydrated and supple.

But there are many other chemicals in it. Thats why it misses the mark as a plant-based product.

Best Baby Lotion Alternative: DIY it

Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil with Glycerine and Aloe vera extract. It’s an easy-to-make option and absorbs well. But in the wrong concentrations can be a little tricky to apply. For the homemade option preservation is not always easy and freshly made is recommended. Always perform a skin test before applying.

When is the Best Time To Apply The baby Lotion?

It’s best to moisturize the skin after a bath when the skin is still damp. That way, the pores are still open, and the lotion is easily absorbed. Helping the skin stay soft, smooth, supple, and well hydrated.

What to avoid when shopping for baby lotion?

Too many ingredients make me apprehensive. Especially long, complicated chemical names. With baby care products, less is best.

I prefer products which are :

● Free of Dye and Synthetic Fragrances.

● Free of Paraben( endocrine disruptor)

● Free of phthalates, Sodium Laureth, artificial fragrances, synthetic dyes

● Free of alcohol-containing products and free of petroleum-derived compounds

● Free of Phenoxyethanol( suspected potential carcinogen).

● Free of preservatives. Preservatives often cause skin irritations and allergic reactions.

I prefer organic Plant-based oils as the main ingredient in my baby lotion.

Super tip: You should always read the product label, even if the product is recommended by a favorite celebrity or your BFF.

Takeaway

You need a baby lotion for your baby’s skin, right? Choose the products with natural ingredients and fewer chemicals. Less is more, and it should be free of harmful chemicals. What you choose today affects your baby for a lifetime. . No one said this would be easy, right?

Air-pollution – A non-controllable risk factor for NCDs in India?

Air pollution is a serious problem. It affects our physical and mental health in a multitude of ways. India’s largest primary healthcare survey covered 233672 and 673 public health offices in 21 states by ASSOCHAM India and TARI gave us several answers. Hypertension, Digestive Diseases, and Diabetes are the top three NCD.

We are facing a huge burden of non-communicable diseases. With over 6.3 million deaths in 2017, our country contributed 15.3% of overall global deaths due to NCDs.

According to India’s largest survey report on Non-communicable Diseases by Assocham India and TARI (Thought Arbitrage Research Institute), hypertension, digestive diseases, and diabetes are among the most prevalent NCDs in the country. This is followed by respiratory diseases, brain disorders, heart diseases, kidney disorders, and cancer.

As per the report, air pollution is the most prevalent risk factor among people with NCDs at 76%. It is followed by a sedentary lifestyle, improper diet while alcohol and tobacco consumption come lower down the order as other major risk factors for NCDs at 16% and 95 respectively. The report further highlights that 3 out of 4 Indians are exposed to air pollution, and this is highest among people in the age group 36-50 years at 30% as compared to other age groups.

Air pollution includes ambient particulate matter, household air pollution . Air Particulate Matter (PM) pollution, PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles can slip past our body’s defenses, damaging our brain, heart, and lungs.
Air pollution is everywhere, and our exposure to it is irrespective of age and profession. This is confirmed by Greenpeace India which in its report says that 154 cities in our country have an average particulate matter level higher than the national standard and fail to match the air quality standard prescribed by WHO.


In our country, people working as field workers, shopkeepers, working laborers, and sales professionals who extensively travel for their work are more vulnerable to air pollution. These people are exposed to various sources of air pollution. This includes emissions from plants and factories, automobile exhaust, harmful gases like carbon monoxide emitted from the burning of fossil fuels like coal, petroleum, and natural gases. Stubble or crop burning activities and mining operations are some of the other major causes of outdoor pollution in India.

Non-working women and the young population living within the confines of the house are exposed to household air pollution. They are mostly subjected to air pollution caused by burning fuel such as kerosene, wood, and coal using basic stoves and to a lesser extent by secondhand smoke generated by tobacco smoking by the family members within the household premises.


Individually, we cannot control air pollution. This makes it one of the most common environmental risk factors associated with critical non-communicable diseases.


Air pollution affects pregnant women and kids as well. It causes pneumonia, reduces birth weight, lung growth, aggravates asthma, and adversely affects brain development in children.
Our skin plays the role of the barrier protecting the body from harmful things in the outside world is disturbed by air pollutants depending on the nature of the pollutant. People exposed to air pollution are found to be most prone to developing skin diseases.


Air pollution increases the chances of contracting skin diseases by as high as 52%. This typically happens when there is abnormal exposure to air pollution that exceeds the skin’s defensive potential. Acne vulgaris, Skin cancer, Contact Dermatitis Actinic Keratosis, and Psoriasis are common skin diseases that may be triggered by air pollution and other risk factors.


Air quality has an impact on the health of our lungs and the entire respiratory system too. People exposed to outside air pollution are 28% more susceptible to respiratory diseases while those subjected to indoor pollution are 17% more susceptible to such a disease. Air pollution at work, indoor air pollution, and air pollution on the road can make an individual prone to respiratory diseases.


The chances of developing hypertension are connected with air pollution. Air pollution accounts for increasing the chances of developing hypertension by 19%. This is due to the presence of other substances such as pollutants in the air besides oxygen.


With 12% of the relative risk percentage, air pollution is known to trigger diabetes in a significant manner among vulnerable populations. Air pollutants typically enter the bloodstream and react with tissues and organs. This disrupts the body and among other things, alters insulin sensitivity, and production. Such cases have been found mostly in low-income countries like India, China, and Indonesia where there is a lack of clear policies on air pollution.


With growing air pollution, today, we are more prone to developing cancer. It sparks defects in our body’s DNA repair function and altering immune response enhancing the relative risk of developing cancer by 6%. Globally, there are also concerns with airborne carcinogens that may increase the cases of lung cancer.


The awareness about the role of risk factors in the causation of NCDS is relatively poor in our country. This makes it important to generate awareness and amass knowledge about NCDs and mitigation.


Given that we have limited control over environmental risk factors like air pollution, lifestyle changes are essential. It’s equally important for all of us to undergo preventive check-ups for taking necessary precautionary actions and early detection and treatment if conditions of specific NCDs are setting in.

Can Flu Vaccine be given with other Vaccines?

Short Answer: Yes. For the long answer and the whys read on.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is Benjamin Franklin’s most famous quote. Vaccination is the ounce of prevention, considered one of the twentieth century’s best public health achievements. Its contribution in singlehandedly keeping children safe and healthy all over the world is undisputed. 

Consider Flu. Swine Flu, Bird flu keep visiting the world causing 30 lakhs to 60 lakhs severe cases with 2.9 lakh to 6.5 lakh respiratory annual mortality [1]. The vaccine is available on-demand. But only a section of aware people vaccinates their kids and get vaccinated. 

When to give a flu shot in India?

How far apart should flu vaccines be given? In India, every person over six months needs to take the Flu vaccine at least annually. You need the Flu vaccine at least yearly since the Influenza virus keeps changing its genetic makeup. 

The vaccines for a year reflect the strains which are more likely to be prevalent during that year. It’s best if you take the vaccine shot in good time before the Flu season. It usually takes at least two weeks for the immunity to be adequate. For  India, the right time to vaccinate is before the monsoons.  

Before Flu season comes, we as a family get ready to fight Flu every year without fail. It’s the best way to prevent what can be prevented. Vaccines are excellent in preventing complications from diseases, and as a parent, that’s my first wish.

Flu and other vaccines

As a doctor, I often get asked if the flu vaccine can be given along with another one on the Immunization schedule on the same day. The answer is yes, you can. The Flu vaccine is a killed vaccine, so you can take another killed or live vaccine on the same day with a different syringe at different sites. An example, my cousin’s daughter was due for her Flu vaccine. She could take the MMR and Flu vaccine on the same visit.

Do I need the Flu shot every year?Yes

The general rule is as follows:

For live vaccines: You can take them on the same day (different sites and different syringes) or after 4 weeks. 

For an inactivated vaccine/toxoid: You can take it any time.

How does an inactivated vaccine work?

When an inactivated virus vaccine or a virus subunit vaccine is injected into the white blood cells, a germ-fighting mechanism gets geared to fight it. They train their first line of soldiers(NK cells), their second line of defense(cellular and antibody-mediated). Then finally, they tell their data entry operators (memory B and T cells)to enter this into the hard disk of your defense memory. It’s only after the second or further dose of the vaccine that adequate immunity to the germ happens.

Do live vaccines need a second dose

Common live vaccines include MMR, Varicella. Since they can still replicate, a single dose is enough, and the cellular immunity is robust. The second live virus vaccine is thus best given either at the same time or after 4 weeks. But if given at inappropriate gaps before 4 weeks, the immune cells will fail to work with as much syncing as maximally possible.

The immune response to both vaccines may turn out to be less than adequate, with a high chance of vaccine failure.

Vaccination and immunization are often used interchangeably. But vaccination means the process of getting vaccines. Immunization means induction of immunity. Vaccination on time in the proper way provides immunization. Vaccines are a priority for most families. Depending on the child’s age, the prevalence of diseases, and the immune status of kids, immunization varies between countries. The national immunization schedules are so planned to prevent erratic vaccination, boosters and to avoid missed doses.

Takeaway:

  • The annual Flu shot protects.
  • Killed vaccines or live vaccines can be taken at any time of taking the Flu vaccine.

We must #PreventWhatCanBePrevented because flu is preventable with vaccination.

World Watercolor Month:July Art

Did you know July is World Watercolour month?magine I didn’t know this.An entire month dedicated to Watercolour and encouraging Watercolour artists all over the world.

I am painting since 2020 and even then I only starting practicing from January 2021 ,when Tangi invited me to be a Tangi Creator.

There was no looking back.

But in July I already missed posting for 3 days ,because I was finishing a Blogging challenge. Yes I doa lot of challenges.It keeps my head calmer .

Anyways I am rambling.Long story short ,I am doing it now.

It’s better late than never,so I got my stuff out and painted a Watercolour sea shell.

It’s part of another challenge hosted by Thea,Sara,and Diana.

The World Watercolour Month is hosted by @doodlewashed on Instagram. I hope to finish the 31 watercolours they are challenging us with .

This is my Day 4 art work. I will be sharing the rest here and on Instagram

If you come along for this challenge, don’t forget to let me know in the comments and on Instagram. The best thing about watercolour is that they are almost living.If you add colour to a wet surface the beautiful lines they create are more beautiful than anything you or could paint.

Plenty of seashell painting everywhere but when I looked at the seashells they looked way more pretty and delicate .

It’s not easy to paint something with so many delicate details. The end result is too simple ,but I resisted the urge to put in more colours.

It’s the easiest way to help more people on a single day than most do .It’s also an amazing way to learn about human nature.

My natural sense of severe curiosity helps in my journey of finding out the mystery (called disease), from clues (a.k.a symptoms).

What would I be if I wasn’t a doctor?

I have no clue?

Did I tell you I married a doctor too?

That was totally unplanned but started the most amazing journey I could ever hope for.

As a community the doctors are an interesting bunch .We love supporting and helping each other.Even random strangers in the medical professio often refuse compensation from colleagues.

During this Pandemic I learned a few things about being a doctor.

It’s okay to be scared.

It’s okay to not know what’s happening with the world.

It’s okay to feel tired and just do your own thing.

It’s okay to just be .

This too shall pass.

Sometimes do no harm ,is misunderstood.

Live your life,its the only one you have right now.

Dont skip those lectures in college,you will regret.

Anybody who says being a doctor is like any other profession is kidding ,ignore them.Ignoring haters could take up a lot of your head space,so avoid even seeing them.

Life is good and you became doctor for a reason,celebrate it .
