Paresh I came to know, during the Super Blogger Challenge. We had common friends but never interacted. A silent person often is a surprise. Par-God is a surprise. Get ready for a chat into this author’s journey. Working full time, blogging and writing books are all in a day’s work for this multi-talented writer.

Why did you write a book?

A. I always wanted to write a book. I started blogging with the aim of writing a book. When I started, my only aim was to become an author. I had no idea about the professional angle of blogging. And eventually, my journey as a professional blogger began after I became an author. That’s why I wrote a book.

What is this book about?

I have written three books.

1st book

Six degrees: I wrote my first book with 20 odd other bloggers and there are 3 stories in it and our (my team’s) story the awakening is a science fiction revolving around 5 characters and with a message of victory of good over evil.

2nd book

Life in Local Train: Life in Local Train is a story of a commuter. It is inspired by incidents which I experienced or observed while commuting via local train.

3rd book

IPL-ology: IPL-ology is the study of IPL. IPL has affected the life of almost every Indian directly or indirectly in some or the other way. So I thought let’s analyze the different factors of the league which has become an important part of Life.

Who helped you write the book?

It was a story writing competition organized by blogadda. They made 30 teams of 10 bloggers each and gave us the characters to web a story. My team webbed a science fiction story around those characters and all things fell in place. We won the competition with that story and our story was published. This is how I became a writer.

It was not only blogadda who helped me. Blogadda gave me the opportunity by putting me in the company of writers who were much more talented than me. Preethi Venugopal, Tina Basu, Soumya Verna, Ashutosh Bandhari, Anmol Rawat are some brilliant writers who edited my chapters and converted my ordinary efforts of writing into a book.

Then in my solo debut blogchatter gave the idea of converting my blog posts into an ebook. Ya…So these people and organizations helped me in writing a book.

Writing habits

There is some or the other thing going on in my mind always. I observe things around and come up with ideas to write. Once my idea is ready then I hardly need 3 hours to write a blog post. When I am writing a book. Then I channelize the idea and do the research on the topics which I want to include in the book. After writing, I myself read the whole thing once. While doing that I make changes in the parts which look odd to me. Then I use tools like Grammarly and MS word to correct the grammatical mistakes.

There is no such schedule that I give these many hours to writing. I just go with the flow. Sometimes, I write the whole day. While sometimes, I don’t write anything even for a whole week. It totally depends on the frame of mind I am in and deadline of the campaigns.

Background and my story

I am a common man of this country. A Sindhi by religion, an MBA (in marketing) by qualification and a son of a former banker. Currently, I am working as an accountant and a surveyor in New India Assurance. I am pretty straightforward and try to stand by my words.

As far as my story is concerned, it is a work in progress. I have written 3 books so far which I mentioned above. I am wearing many hats at the moment. I am a blogger, writer, designer, social media influencer, accountant, surveyor and cricketer (on weekends).

When you started blogging did you have a plan of writing a book?

Yes, when I started blogging, I had a plan or rather a dream of writing a book and it was fulfilled soon.

Blogchatter ebook carnival is a great opportunity for aspiring writers, an opportunity to grow for experienced writers.

The best part about it is the feeling after publishing the book.

Launch Plan

Yes, I do have a launch plan for IPL-ology.

First I will launch a cover, then will release the teaser, then will use Blogchatter ebook carnival reviews to get the pre-orders and then finally will launch it. Then after launch promotions.

How happy are you with this milestone?

I always feel that life is lived in moments. And every milestone is a special moment. This is my third book and it is on my foray into cricket. So I am really happy.

Future plans

I have one more idea of an ebook. So I will go on with the same plan till the next ebook carnival concentrating more on blogging collaborations.

As of now, I am waiting for a first best seller.

Blogging is fun.It’s challenging to learn to do it all .
Sometimes in the mad rush of researching, writing content ,and promoting my posts, I was overwhelmed.
So I thought the #Daily chatter challenge for 2 weeks at the blogchatter would be too much to handle.

But what’s a challenge ,if it’s not difficult . If you really want to push your limits at blogging it’s great to have friends who are in the same boat .

The beauty of blogging is this effortless friendship across time and distance .
Sharing thoughts ,promoting and encouraging other blogger friends.

Some people may say only bloggers read and promote other blogs.
That may or may not be true.But it’s a win win for all.

Blogs are your own self-publishing paradise. It’s your way of a bit of digital real estate.Digital immortality.

What’s great about blogging?

It’s great if you want to practice expressing your opinion.
It’s great as a side hustle.
It’s magical as a source of income for stay at home moms.
Overall it’s the best way of making friends online.

The blogchatter made this community feeling enormous.That’s my takeaway from this challenge .This sense of belonging .

Many will laugh at my feeble attempts.But when I compare , my current results with 2 months back.It’s a pleasant surprise.

I realised how much I could push myself.
Sometimes that’s enough to keep you going when you are just starting out.

I realised I want to post my articles 3 times a week.This will give me time to do research and also continue with the pace this challenge gave my blog.

I will be tweaking the backend stuff and promote my posts on the other 3 days.

Sunday is my creative break and brainstorming day.

Over the next few days ,I will be updating the posts which are doing well.

I also would finally publish my Resource page.I waited almost 2 years to do this .That’s because I really wanted to see what works for my DIY blog before committing.

My blog is about health-wellness and my journey as a mompreneur.I am not a work from home mom.But sometimes I wish I had that choice.

That was the main reason I wanted to explore when I started blogging.I have heard the stories of many bloggers making the full-time income from home.But whether a non-technical mom could do it was anybody’s guess.

Tell me a little about your background, your story.

I belong to Tamil Nadu. Both my parents are retired government employees. My sister is an ophthalmic surgeon. I grew up in New Delhi. I graduated with a B-Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi in 1988. I initially tried to take up a career in marketing but to be honest that was a total washout as I found I did not have the diplomacy or the finesse required of a good marketing man.???? I then switched over to a career in Information Technology and I have been working in the field for the past twenty-seven years.

Has your background helped you write?

Frankly, I have never written anything except an Independence Day speech in my fifth grade and essays as a part of my academic curriculum. Writing is totally new to me. But the fact that I studied in a school where I picked up a lot of proficiency in the English language has helped me immensely. Now that I am writing, I realize what a boon that has been. Another thing that has helped me in my brief writing career is my voracious reading habit.

Why did you want to write a book?

I actually started as a blogger. A year back we had the founding day function of the organization I am working in. Usually, we have a cultural program and normally I sit safely with the audience and never present anything on stage. One of my close friends suggested that I present a poem this time. I had never thought of myself as a writer especially a poet. Initially, I did not take the suggestion very seriously. But that weekend I was sitting with my laptop and just for the heck of it I gave it a try. The poem was based on the antics of my mischievous twelve-year-old daughter.???? To cut a long story short the poem was a big hit at the function. After that, I decided to start a blog just to post poems.

One thing led to another and soon I was posting articles, photography and several other things on my blog. That is how I started writing. As far as writing a book is concerned I made my first attempt some six months back. Actually, I was planning to post it as a series of chapters on my blog. It just appeared to be a good idea. I had no plans of writing a full-blown book. But after I had written the first chapter I asked myself; why should I post it on my blog chapter by chapter? Why not write a complete book? I sat down and reeled off some ninety pages.

Then I gave what I had written a reading. It did not read like a good book and I gave up the idea. Finally, I heard of the Blogchatter e-book carnival and that is how I came to write my first ebook. It is not even a novel. It is just a ninety-four-page novella. I hope people like it. As you can see writing a book in my case has been more an accident than something I attempted by design.????

What is your book about?

Eighty Hours To Save Karen falls under the thriller fiction genre.

I will give a short synopsis.

A little child named Karen is afflicted with a strange illness. The doctors are at a loss to explain the illness and there is some suspicion that it could involve the occult and the supernatural. Karen is all that her grandfather Mathew has left in the world. Mathew starts out on a dangerous quest to save Karen’s life. The story is all about Mathew’s journey to save Karen.

Who helped you write the book?

The book was proofread by my friends Varadhrajan Ramesh, Krishna Kumar Subramaniam and my sister Sudha Somanathan. They came up with several useful suggestions. Another person who helped me was a colleague in office Jose J Pallakkathyil.

Tell me a little more about your writing habits. How many hours a day do you spend writing? How do you edit, proofread and format your writings? Who inspires you?

I write both poetry and articles. I write poetry when I am struck by some inspiration. This could be a phrase I hear or something I watch on television. I post articles when I hear or see something I feel strongly about. Recently I have also been inspired to write flash fiction by my friend Varadharajan Ramesh. I spend around an hour or so every day on writing. Sometimes I take a break from it for a whole week especially when office work takes precedence. For editing, I use tools like Grammarly and Ginger.

But one thing I have learned is, it never pays to do something that has to be done manually by using automated software. So, I depend more on myself for editing and formatting. I read the articles I write a number of times before I post them on my blog.

One thing is if I sit down to post something I finish it in one go even if it takes me three or four hours. I have been a voracious reader since my childhood. Some of my favorite authors are PG Wodehouse, Stephen King, and Robert Ludlum. I also love the legal thrillers written by John Grisham.

As a writer, I am inspired by Stephen King and Agatha Christie.

When you started blogging did you have a plan to write books?

I never had any plans to write anything, leave alone books. Writing has come as an accident and I am extremely happy that it happened. I am thankful to fate for guiding me towards writing.

What about the Blogchatter Ebook Carnival? Which part did you enjoy the most?

The Blogchatter A to Z blogging festival and the e-book carnival are simply a marvelous platform to bring out your creative juices. I like the idea of writing twenty-six posts related to the English alphabet in one month. It is a really tough challenge and tests one’s abilities and perseverance quite a bit.

The e-book carnival helps aspiring writers by giving them a chance to present their writing skills. There are several video chats conducted by Blogchatter with eminent authors and publishers during the course of the carnival. I listened to a video chat by the founder of Readomania, Dipankar Mukherjee as part of the carnival. He presented some very interesting insights and being a beginner, I learned quite a bit. I loved mingling with my fellow writers the most.

Do you have a launch plan?

I am taking one thing at a time. At the moment I am looking for feedback from people about my first attempt at writing. But yes, eventually, I do intend to publish my novella using KDP in Amazon after some time.

How happy are you with this milestone?

For the time being this is my plan. I am quite satisfied with this milestone. I hope people will like my e-book.

Tell me about your future plans and goals.

At the moment I am trying to set up a platform for taking up writing full-time, in say, another three years. I am fifty-two now and I will be retiring from my profession in three years’ time. I am fully aware that this field is extremely competitive and only the very good ones make it. And after all, I have just made my first attempt at writing something close to a novel. But yes, I do have an aim of becoming a full-fledged writer someday. Only time can tell how successful I am in the venture. I sure am hoping I pull it off.????

One wish you have for your journey as a writer.

As far as wishes go the sky is the limit.???? It might sound ridiculous, but I would like to be the next Stephen King ????. But coming down to the sphere of practical politics I want to have some kind of a loyal following even if I do not become a famous author. By that, I mean people who look forward to my books and enjoy reading them. Even if I don’t touch the pinnacle of glory I would be more than happy if I get that far.

How many blogs do you manage ?

I manage two blogs. One is Food Blog somethingiscooking.com
Personal blog: kohleyed.me

Who is your target audience ?

For the food blog, I would say anyone who loves to cook simple, easy to make dishes at home.

I don’t fancy those complex dishes which takes more than a couple of hours to cook. I am impatient that way. I write about anything and everything on my personal blog.

You can find poems, a bit of fiction, book reviews, movie reviews or even about how my day went by. Thus said, it is more like that warm cup of coffee on a winter day.

Best blog design tips from your experience

Black text in White background- this does the trick always. Choose only a font or two while writing your posts. I believe too much is too bad.

Time management tips for my audience

There was a time when I did Daily Blogging on both my blogs while I had a full-time IT job. It was tedious but I work efficiently and better when I keep myself busy.

I keep a mental reminder of what to do in each hour of the day, thus managing home, work and both the blogs. I also love to make ‘to-do’ lists just after waking up and tick off the list as the day progress.

Best blogging practices

Be regular, even if it means you post only once a week. Appreciate the readers who share and comment on your posts.

Reciprocate your gratitude by reading their blog posts and leaving meaningful comments.

I am dead against leaving a ‘nice post’ comment on any blog.

Which email service do you use?

I use the default WordPress email subscription tool for now. I am learning about other services and it will soon be available on the food blog.

What’s the one thing you wish your blog had or you knew when you started

That’s a bit difficult to answer because I feel content about my blogs always. It is not a good thing for I always want to better my blogs.

So, right now it is a newsletter which my blog needs.

What would you do differently if you had to start now knowing everything you do?

I would concentrate on Image optimization and SEO a bit more if I have to start a blog right now.

I am still taking baby steps but yes, blogging is a long journey.

Give us your top 5 ways of making money from your blog

Even after three years of blogging, I still feel I am an amateur. I have not started earning from my blogs yet, except a few occasional wins in contests.

Do you have any products?

No. I should say, it is work in progress at the moment. I have big things for my blogs in mind in the coming year.

Your inspiration

I draw inspiration from almost everything that surrounds me. Yes, there are days when I lose my cooking mojo.

But then I try to simplify and prepare my comfort food. I am inspired by beautiful ingredients, beautiful recipes, and beautiful stories about food.

I am inspired by the weather and and what I am hungry to eat????.

Yes and I do not disclose about it much. I have pledge to donate my eyes and I am privileged to be part of a cancer charity support.

What I use to make my Blogging and life easier!

Number one on this list is the Gmail app on my phone.I can check my email anytime and get all my work done on my phone itself without opening the laptop.When I open laptop its writing time!No more distractions!

The Google doc app is also very useful.It is synced to all my devices.I use it to write notes, blog post ideas, make my to do list, edit my books rough draft everything.

The best part about the Google doc Chrome extension is it has a voice to text typing feature.if your Wi-fi is good you can type using voice typing that special useful when your fingers are paining after a long day this post was written using voice typing there are some errors which needs to be checked also the voice typing tool doesn’t work if the net is slow it doesn’t work on phone so you are stuck with the laptop but even then it’s a cool free additive to the Google Chrome extension this free voice to text apps on the phone have a much higher rate of mistakes than the one with the Google doc

The next thing that makes life easier for me is the add-on feature in Google doc.With the add on feature you can add WordPress.com.This is a super cool way of directly saving all your drafts in your wordpress dashboard. This is possible only from the Google Chrome Extension.

Another super productivity tool is the Pinterest app .Just scroll through your feed and do your organic pinning for the day when you are traveling.

Canva app on the phone saving when I am in a hurry and really need to make a quick update for insta on my blog I just need to look at my previous drops or graphics user as a template change the text and I am set.

PayTm is another app which has made my life very easy it.It helps in easy transfer of money.Plus you can use it for the Facebook ads.

Creativemarket free goodies for many of my Graphic goods needs.They have free downloads every week and I love them.

What helps me boost up my productivity?

Drinking water.Yes, it helps me concentrate.On days I don’t enough water I get irritable and high strung.Not good at all.

Walking and playing with the exercise ball.Nothing is as relaxing as a fun workout .

How do I waste my time?

Okay you don’t need to know this I am sure you have plenty of ways.

Way to find Zen:

Remind yourself of your wh.I cuddle with my daughter and ask myself

What is the most important thing I should get done now?

That helps, me decide .

Also when the worst comes to worst I remember one thing

Absolutely nothing. Dust to dust is the biggest truth .

What matters is the work you do today, now, should help someone.Even if that is you .

Tim ferris is #1 New York Times best seller author for a reason.

My thought after I read this book :

When you stand on the shoulders of giants you can see further .Sometimes you will not have the vision or the time to look beyond your own perimeter thats when books like these help.

What did I love about the book?

Everything!

Please don’t do anything stupid and kill yourself.It would make us both unhappy.Consult a doctor, lawyer and a common sense specialist before doing anything in this book.

This man has a way with words.I have rarely read a more entertaining disclaimer.

Next comes the Forward by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It’s divided into healthy, wealthy and wise.

With tips, thoughts life lessons, book suggestions, and distilled wisdom from 111 wise men and women.

Now if you rarely like heeding to good advice ignore this book.But if you like to learn from others wisdom (and cut short many pains)go buy this book

The best part I loved the non-profile chapters a lot too.They are Tim’s quick hack tips for healthier wealthier and wiser you.

He advises you to skip liberally and intelligently.Unique advice but I get it.The entire book may not help you now , you can pick, choose skip and use what you need help with most .

One habit I plan to use right away

Arnold tips on meditation to fight overwhelm.He advices two times a day, 20 minutes each for one year and you will be ready to battle the worries which come from living a full life.

Interestingly he says weight training is a form of meditation too because you can concentrate on the muscle.Epic advise!

Productivity and happiness for me go together.

I am happy I am more productive.When I am happy ,work gets done quicker.

As a mom who works, writes, gardens and loves to travel I will tell you one secret.

Believe .

Yes, believe that you can do it and you will become more productive.You set your own goals and timeline.Don’t let others benchmarks and stats weigh you down.They are important but in their own place.
