I started blogging  in October 2014.I am reaching my second blog anniversary.
The most difficult thing has been, to be true to my goals.
Everything I do with blogging is a DIY journey.Its not always wise to DIY. But I did it anyway .
Main reason was, I wanted to learn on the “job”.
When I was training as a post-graduate student my guide once told me,” the only way to learn everything about anything is first be a student”.

As I  want to learn everything, but on a budget.
There’s a lot of free content online.But like gold panning is difficult , so is finding the right content.Among all the content churning  , some bloggers shine like diamonds.Whether you are in India, Africa, America or Australia  , these 3 bloggers can change your life.

The internet is the best way to learn on the job.
As I  approach my second blog birthday.I have to say thank you, to people who have consistently helped.

When I was an intern at Calcutta Medical College I realized that the human body is the biggest mystery .It’s important to have an overview (that’s why the MBBS helps) but you also need depth of info.

After that I have read almost everything he has written .
Though Pat is anything but passive, his smart passive income blog has answers to all questions that you may ask about online business .

I have been reading her stuff for ever.I don’t know how she gets so much done. But she has loads of great content, both free and paid which you must check out.
I have taken two of her free courses.
Go Independent and Blog like a mag and both are super value for your time.
If you love superwomen ,you will love Regina.

She has 72 hours in her day. That’s how great her content is. I am not an affiliate for her product but I love them just the same .
She is absolutely great at creating digital products.

Diet and depression share a love-hate relationship. Eating too much or too little can both be warning signs. A healthy balanced diet will help you keep your mind and body healthy. The Bengali diet is a typical fish and rice diet. When I was young I rarely appreciated my mom’s fish-rice staple menu.

Is gut health related to your mood swings? Recent research says yes.YOu will do well to listen to your gut and keep it healthy.

Typical  food patterns before depression

You will have a poor appetite or overeat (emotional eating)You will want to skip meals. Your sweet tooth will take the upper hand. Also when you skip meals, especially carbs you are more likely to suffer from mood swings. This is because your brain exclusively uses glucose (the building block of carbs) as energy

Top tips from nutritional neuroscience:

  • Have fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Fruits and veggies are important to give you important water-soluble vitamins like vitamins B,C, folate.
  • Vitamin B complex and folate are both important to prevent relapse after therapy with antidepressants.
  • Check Vitamin D status and adjust the daily dose.
  • Whole grain cereals and legumes
  • Nuts like walnuts,almonds which are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acid
  • Don’t skip carbs.
  • Go for the low GI carbs and avoid sugar spikes.
  • Proteins especially animal proteins are complete proteins and have all essential amino acids for your body to function. But skip processed meat as far as possible, because that’s where the danger of colon cancer and problems of altered gut flora lies.
  • Your brain chemicals or neurotransmitters are proteins. These neurotransmitters help relay info. They are also responsible for your moods. Serotonin is the mood elevating neurochemical.9-% of Serotonin is released in the digestive tract and is responsible for the communication between your gut and the brain and is a responsible member of the Enteric nervous system. Yes, your gut is your second brain, and your vagus nerve which is the tenth cranial nerve, helps your digestive system, connects it to the brain, and is possibly behind the strange feeling in the pit of your stomach when your are anxious. You need tryptophan an amino acid to make this chemical. Where will you find tryptophan? High-quality proteins contain all the essential amino acids like in eggs,chicken, meat, and dairy. But remember moderation is key. Avoid processed food.

  • Minerals which are important: Calcium Iodine Chromium Iron Selenium Lithium

Now, this may go against all fad diet recommendations. But you do need certain food to function.

Most research will tell you your total diet quality is important. Food not only nourishes your body, it also nourishes your soul. Mood disorders like depression, anxiety, OCDs are influenced by your diet. Your diet will help your medicines. It will also play a role in deciding how much you are helped.

Whether you can be weaned off drugs and whether relapse is possible. Don’t ignore your food cravings and your food habits. They hold the key to your moods. Interestingly your gut microbes may be playing a role in influencing your moods. Its quite common that when your bowels are not moving, your mood is off.

There’s more to gut feeling than you previously thought. The gut has its nervous system which transmits to your brain(The brain is the big boss) Your gut microbes also may be releasing special neurotransmitters which affect how you feel. More reason to keep your gut populated by healthy probiotic organisms. This research is still in its early stages. But emerging trends make this an interesting possibility. #ThankfulThursdays 51:What I am Thankful for this Week

This week has been amazing.I am sorry to have missed writing my thank you note last week and felt bad the entire week.

So here goes.

What I am thankful for this week on #ThankfulThursday51

It was my birthday on the twenty-second.My daughter with my hubby’s help baked me the most delicious choco lava cake.It was perfect.Her excitement at planning surprises for me made me feel the universe’s blessing in every moment.

I have rarely felt as excited for my birthday before.

Another interesting event that happened was Saraswati pujo.

Vasant Panchami is when Goddess Saraswati is worshipped.She is the Goddess of learning.I was born on one such Vasant Panchami several moons ago.And this year when again my birthday coincided I felt extremely happy and blessed.

But I had more surprises awaiting me.

My hubby got me 4storybooks. A new Bengali Detective book with a female truth seeker and 3 other Detective storybook.

I also got a brand new tripod for my Nikon!I love it to bits.It’s making my pic taking so much easier.No bad posture and no more backache.

I won the third runner-up Indiblogger contest with Asian Paints #Royale atmos: Clean Air beautiful Homes. I felt happy for the appreciation.You can check out my post here.

A very good birthday gift indeed.

Health goals

I am sleeping better.Thanks to the new Duroflex ad featuring Milind Soman.After drinking water, sleep is the easiest health tool for all to adapt to.

My book reading challenge for 2018 is on track.

I read The Way of the Cat: Surviving Metastasized Cancer and reviewed it too.

The best part I got gifted a new subscription of Kindle unlimited.Just perfect.

Thankful for Reading

A few thoughts from the books Tools of Titans which I have been batch reading since the first of this month (though bought long ago ).

Favourite quotes from the book this month.I am doing it in parts because of its 650 plus pages.Each page is a peek into a person who has made it big in their own way.No skipping the pages here.Also while reading nonfiction I make plenty of notes so it takes a little bit of time.Fiction I can swallow quickly.That’s why at any one time I am reading one nonfiction or two with at least 2 other fiction.

Last week while writing for the #Chatter prompt I wrote my advice to Newbies.While writing it I realized the truths afresh.

You write because you love to write .You write because you have a story to tell.You write because your story may help someone.You write because it’s a gift and a blessing.While writing for all this reason if the side effect is making money then there’s nothing like it.

One has to remember that money is divine energy.Until you feel good about making money you will have a hard time making a good relation with it.This book explains it beautifully but I understood with my life.

Vitamin E for Your Hair:Secrets No One Tells you

I am a big fan of dietary sources of vitamins and minerals.They are perfect for long-term health.But what happens when your body undergoes a special physiological condition or you have a deficiency?Then just diet may be inadequate to make up the deficiency.

After I had my baby, I suffered tremendous hair fall. This was a result of stress, poor diet, sleeplessness, and postpartum hormones. Now knowing the cause was one thing and treating it was another. Guess what I did?I researched hair fall like it was my Ph.D. topic and can comfortably say that things have improved.

5 things which have helped me grow my hair 

Decrease stress: This is non-negotiable. The more we stress the more stress hormones are released.These cause a toxic build-up of free radicals which damage each of your cells.

The right diet rich in vitamins, minerals. Biotin, Vitamin E, a variety of micronutrients, and quality protein in your diet are all essential for good hair and I followed these steps for better hair health.

I started using only pure organic coconut oil to oil my hair. Research shows coconut oil has the most compatible molecular size for easy penetration into the hair follicles and gets absorbed into your scalp easily.

I also started applying 2 capsules of Evion mixed with coconut oil as a super nutrient for my scalp.Watch the video to know exactly how I apply the hair oil mixed with VitaminE

I got my blood pressure, blood sugar, thyroid profile , and lipid profile checked. Then I  took a short course of Vitamin E  supplements.

Studies show an association between oxidative stress and hair fall. Patients with hair loss exhibit lower levels of antioxidants in their scalp area.

Who should avoid taking oral supplements of Vitamin E

  • If you have known hypersensitivity to  Vitamin E.
  • Patients who have been treated with chemotherapy.
  • Patient with scalp trauma.
  • Concomitant or used within 6 months, medications, such as steroids, oral contraceptives, cytotoxic agents, vasodilators, antihypertensive agents, anticonvulsant drugs, ß-adrenergic receptor blockers, diuretics, spironolactone, cimetidine, cyclosporine or ketoconazole.

Disclaimer: There are no studies to support indiscriminate supplementation with Vitamin E .Specific conditions and people will be helped with vitamin E supplements. The challenge lies in establishing ideal selection criteria to predict who will benefit from vitamin E supplementation

How to fight off depression:Lifestyle Medicine

To fight off depression is a daily challenge

My father is a patient of MDP.Both me and my sister  have actively fought against succumbing to self-pity .But genetics  is a tough cookie.

Luckily for many like me ,Major depressive disorders , have no single gene in its bag.It’s actually  a complex dish, made up of  multiple  genetic factors and spiced up by environmental  stimuli.

The bad news :it’s in your genetic makeup.

The good news :you can absolutely  beat it.

The question is how can you fight off depression

Prevention…that’s my  answer .

If that doesn’t work you have medicines ,to get you started on the road to recovery.

Once on this road you have to get your stuff together and actively prevent the sticky hold  of depression your mind.
I have suffered  bouts of deep blues (this sounds better,the word depression is sad),but have managed to get back.I  consistently do a few  things ,to hold onto my happy mind so that my sad mind can’t rule.

What can derail your plans

Major life decisions like

  • New job
  • New baby
  • New relationship
  • New place
  • All of the above together  can push you off the edge.

The trick is to stop yourself from taking a head first dive.

A bit of the blues ,will colour everyone’s life. What you have to take care is to have a mental checklist.

When the blue strikes, start 1,2,3.

I am writing mine down .Maybe it will help someone..

#Blood tests must do.It might be your body

Get your thyroid hormone
Haemoglobin and
vitamin D levels checked.
All three are known to make depression  worse and may be the cause.

Sometimes hormones or chronic illness can cause your brain chemicals to go astray.

That means your brain is not the prime culprit here.You treat your thyroid ,you get better.You get the drift.

Let’s now try Lifestyle medicine.Yes that’s an actual term and currently my favourite( be prepared to hear it frequently )

When you use environmental, behavioural, and psychological stimuli to improve your physical and mental wellbeing you are  on Lifestyle Medicine.

#1
Exercise
Start walking/running /exercising
This is multifactorial.
Exercise releases endorphins:natural antidepressants.
When you exercise your body and mind both feel healthier.
When you walk/run/lift weight/do yoga/martial arts ,it improves self-esteem.

When you exercise your thyroid gland works better and you feel  better.A simple routine is all you need.
Loosing weight by exercising helps your thyroid gland.

#2 Diet

Fresh fruits and veggies.Balanced diet.No fasting.Frequent small meals.
Vitamin C and other antioxidant-rich diet help fight depression.


Avoid alcohol, fried, highly salted, thyroid depressing , food which can make you lethargic, lazy , sad and depressed

#3 Try Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness is a form of meditation.You can get many free YouTube videos which will help.
# 4  Garden

Or have at least 1 pot of green plant at home which you will take care of

Looking at green plants is known to improve mental health

#5 Share your thoughts on Instagram posts #mental health and see the support pouring in.I will be there too.

#6 Start your own blog  and share your thoughts.I will be rooting for you.
The things I have written are what I follow to feel better and fight my lows  every day.Sometimes it’s not so great,but everyday fight to feel better.Maybe you will need medication to get you started.If you have a thyroid problem, vitamin D deficiency or any other medical problem, that will need to be treated with medicines and the tips above.

#7  Sleep

8 hours per day.This is a major factor which can cause depression in susceptible people.

# 9 Avoid alcohol , drugs, smoking any substance abuse.These can derange your brain chemicals and will make the problem worse.

10  Pray and thank God.Because you are lucky.You still have insight.Knowing you have a problem us the most important step.

.That’s a sign that your brain wants to get better.Hold onto that thought.Never give up.

Self-love & Narcissism :Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde? (not that simple )

Self-love is a favorite topic.I once read

If you find someone to love you as much as you love yourself you will live happy.Anon

So the first step is to love yourself deeply madly crazily.

If that sounds crazy, be crazy.Do not let your self-love dry up.

Be your own bestie, be kind to yourself.Forgive yourself and let yourself live.When one thinks about the different types of love their trials and tribulations, the easiest should be self-love right?According to psychologists, it’s not that simple.

Selfish self-centered and narcissistic are all siblings.They are the different clones of the same self or ego.The one you will feed more will grow (wisdom alert!)

Narcissism by definition(Wikipedia)

Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one’s own attributes.

But healthy balanced positive narcissism or self-love is needed to develop self-esteem and self-love?This is Dr.Jekyll!

This concept was not researched in detail by Freud but by Paul Federn.

Psychologists suggest that healthy self-love is an essential part of the self or ego.

It is needed for self-preservation.

Even when you love with all your being try to keep a part of yourself deep within your soul.This is the protection that preserves your soul from all outside evil disruptive forces.This fragment of your self is the narcisstic part of us which wants to survive, to flourish to grow.

Children need this sense of self-preservation groomed into their childhood.Otherwise it tough.

But what if you love yourself too much?

If your quest for fame fortune and starshine outshines normal social norms and is at the cost of other relationships, maybe its time to pause.

While its impossible to go forward in life without self-love, self-confidence and a good dose of self-esteem, it’s equally important to have empathy and feeling of social inclusion.

When we focus too much on me we may actually lose we.

The important thing to remember hardcore narcissism is according to Freud one of the three dark triadic personality traits.The other two are psychopathy and Machiavellianism.Meet Mr.Hyde!

Food for thought anyone?

The only answer to this question from me.It’s complicated.

A balance is needed .Just like everything else in life.
