Nature’s bounty of fruits and vegetables are an easy way to add the much-needed multivitamins to our diet.Vitamin supplements never look half as good and no comparison is possible regarding taste.
Many of the vitamins have their source in fruits and vegetables. Some, however, may have animal products as their best sources.
An easy way to remember:
Water soluble vitamins like B complex and C: Main source fruits and veggies
Fat soluble vitamins:ย Vitamin ย A, D, E, K

Vitamin A: Keeps our eyes healthy
Richest source is orange and yellow fruits and veggies. Carrots are a very good source.

As Beta-carotene: Red and yellow coloured veggies.Carrots, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes
Vitamin B: Important for best energy production and repair of muscle tissues.Helps to keep our digestive system healthy.

Thiamine:ย Yeast, pulses, wheat, rice (paroled and milled), bread
Riboflavin:ย Milk and milk products, eggs, papaya, dried apricots, leafy veggies
Niacin:Liver,kidney,peanuts,beef,mutton,pork,wholemeal cereals,pulses
VitaminB6:Avocado,banana,legumes (dried beans),meat,nuts,poultry,whole grains.
Folate:Liver,peanuts,green leafy veggies ,avocado ,pulses.

Vitamin C, E: ย Both these are antioxidants.They help prevent cellular damage hence has anti-aging property, helps prevent cancer.

How to change ..slow and steady….the rule of 5
5 Servings per day
2 servings of fruit,3 or more of veggies, would be best, but it’s better to be slow, steady and consistent. Gradually increasing number of fruits and vegetable in every meal helps to increase the total daily intake.
5 Trick to do this
Breakfast
- Bananas ย , apples , grapes, berries,various nuts, fig ย raisins with oats or corn flakes
- Fruit smoothie
- Spanish omelette with sprouts, carrots, French beans.onions, tomatoes, peas and any other veggies you want.
Lunch: Indians love their sabzi ย as a side dish, so this is generally not a problem
- Sautรฉ seasonal veggies in olive oil, add salt pepper, nuts, raisins and a portion of brown rice.garnish with lemon wedges.
- Salad of cucumber, apples, pears, shredded carrots, oranges and pineapples any others.
- Raita/ yoghurt with diced veggies, fruits of your choices.
Dinner
- Grilled chicken with grilled veggies like carrots, beans tomatoes, peas.
- Salad of cucumber, onions Tomatoes.
Snack
- Diced carrots, tomatoes, onions with boiled chickpeas/ roasted peanuts/muri (puffed rice)/sprouts with a dash of salt, lemon, black pepper.
Dessert
- Sweet fruits like mangoes, apples watermelon, ripe papaya, grapes, sweet berries, custard apple, by themselves are deserts but if you crave chocolate something, dip fruit of your choice in molten dark chocolate.
How to start and stick with the plan
- Slow and steady definitely wins the race in this case.Whatever be the number of fruits and veggie servings you have nowadays, try to increase at least by one serve per week. A gradual lifestyle transition causes less havoc than a drastic change.
- Enjoy fruits as a family together, we started having fruits in front of our toddler which made her have them enthusiastically without much trouble.
Have them as salads, chats, snacks, side dish, main dish, dessert, drink any way you want.
Buy fresh, eat whole or cut, with or without seasoning just have them.Not only do they provide us with essential micronutrients, their fibre and water content and minimal calorie count make them ideal for losing weight and keeping it off the healthy way, so keep on munching!

Holi :Mommy Tips for a safe and fun Holi
Holi is a special celebration.
When I was young we used to play Holi in our neighbourhood .At Medical College I played Holi.I had emergency duty on Holi at Medical College and I played Holi with my little girl who just turned five.
It’s always fun when you play with friends and family .But the fun shouldnโt be at the cost of your safety.
Take care of your skin ,hair eyes and ears and what you eat and drink.
Before going out to play Holi :
I oiled her hair and mine and put moisturizer and sunscreen to both our exposed skin.Hubby being hubby uses nothing.Covered up as best I could ย .I kept the contact lenses at home.Put on my glares ,lipstick on and I was ready to go.
After coming back copious amount of warm water ,body wash and shampoo .Used a conditioner for my hair and an after bath moisturizer.My skin breaks out with any irritant so even though ย the organic abir didn’t burn,itch or sting ,I used ย lacto-calamine lotion .It’s great to cool the skin and soothe itchy ย skin.
Personal safety :
At all times me or hubby were with our daughter .Before playing ground rules were set.We used ย only organic colour. That’s why most of it was easily washed off.
No colour in eyes ย or ears.This is very important .
No water filled balloon to be thrown at ears .It can cause problems in the ear drum including hearing loss!
No playing with strangers.This is obvious at all festivals.No talking to strangers!
No food to be taken which is not offered by mommy or daddy without permission.

Monday Mommy Moments:Coping with exam stress
Do you stress about your children’s exams ?
What do you do to make them deal with exam stress ? My daughter just turned 5 .She has exams.But just doesn’t know what they ย are and that they can cause stress.If I have my way ,I want her to be this way forever.I want her to learn her school work well and do her best ย .But not stress over it so much that she stops having fun learning .
I haven’t started dealing with exam stress for her ,but till a few years back I had exams .
Mommyโs advice to Rai
Study throughout the year.Do your daily work then when its revision time,you do exactly that .Revise.No stressing over completing syllabus.
Eat healthy and sleep on time during exams.Keep your water bottle next to you The snack box is inside your drawer .You can nibble every two hours..Absolutely no late nights.The only thing sleep deprivation does is make you forget what you know.Believe me have tried both!
Dont forget a hobby or light relaxing reading at least twice a day for unwinding the mind.Plus unrelated activities often make you remember better.
Exercise .At least 20 minutes.Walk run,jog,dance .Just don’t stop exercising.If needed read while walking.
Study in a room with no distractions.Not in front of the TV .You may think this works best for you.But it just makes your brain tired.
Make revisions fun.Sometimes reading the same thing over and over is boring.Try to make fun quizes out of your study material .
Try group studies once a week with friends who are sincere.
It breaks the monotony and gets you a fresh outlook.Try to recollect what you studied the night before ย when you set out for the day.
Eat ย a healthy breakfast before going for exams.
Think positive all the time no matter what.No negative self talk and don’t listen to negativity.
Do your best and compete with your own self.Always.
Work hard and pray everything will work out.
Then ย there will be holidays to laze around.
