Thankful Thursday week 3 :Being a doctor changed my life

What’s the life event that changed my life?

Which is the event I am thankful for most?

If you start at the beginning

Which is a very good place to start ……

It all began when I cleared the West Bengal Medical entrance examination .

Life changed.It was exciting.

A whole new world of anatomy dissections,biochemistry vivas ,community medicine classes ,clinical rotations and night duties.

Night duties the bane of my existence . But still being a doctor is the only thing I ever wanted to be.

Luckily for me in West Bengal ,I needed a paltry sum of Rs 250 per year, as yearly tuition fees. So studying to become a doctor was not a money game.

The most money I spent ,was for books .I bought some and photocopied parts of those ,which I couldn’t (Yes I know that’s not ethical,but had to study and couldn’t afford them????)

My parents didn’t have to bear the burden of spending lakhs, on my education.Frankly ,they didn’t have that kind of money .

In fact as a medical student ,it was easier for me to tutor and earn my own pocket money.

Once I became an intern and had the formal Dr. in front of my name ,I started getting paid for my services.

Life changed forever.

In fact I am thankful for studying in West Bengal .Here , till a short time ago ,Private Medical colleges and exorbitant college fees were unheard of.The tax payers helped subsidise my studies.

This thankfulness to the citizens, made me want to stay back in India ,after completing my studies.Life would be different in a different country .But the burden of trust which I have needs fulfilling.

3 Life lessons I have learnt in this journey

It’s during my studies at Calcutta Medical college , I met my very best friend who became my life partner .

So life took a giant leap when I entered Medical College.Both professionally and personally.

You are in a very noble profession and I respect Doctors a lot for they are our spiritual Gods who save lives. Beautiful reflection as always. It’s not easy being one who work selflessly to improve lives Dr Amrita.

You’ve changed my opinions on Doctors. I used to find them to be very serious and boring people. But after knowing you I’ve realised that there is an other side to most doctors too. You’re fun, tech-savvy and always read to help, even go out of your way to do so! And your eagerness to learn and absorb is inspirational.

They say – Medicine is a very noble profession and I think I am surrounded with the noblest. My family has doctors and we are always meeting them in hospitals. Hmm, really they never get to be home on time and we reach hospitals when we are home.
