20 Surprising Lessons from 2020 Which Make Me Thankful

20 Surprising Lessons form 2020

You won’t believe it if I told you, I wrote this post throughout December and didn’t publish it. It sounded cheesy. Then I saw a prompt for a podcast on Kuku_fm and I knew this needed to be written.

But I still folded the laundry and swept the verandah, while the post languished on my phone. I travelled to Kolkata for a short family vacation and now I feel ready for 2021. But before that, I know you are waiting to hear all my brilliant introspections(I hope).

Now since 2020 threw us all a serious curveball, I am praying 2021 is kinder for human kinds and we can fight Corona the right way.

My 2020 lessons and reasons to be thankful, sharing in no particular order.

1 The world is beautiful because of nature and the people around me.

The pink rose that insists on blooming beautiful inspite of the Corona pandemic!
The Bulbul who comes visiting my balcony garden!

2 If not for Blogchatter and the blogging community my blog would have been very sad.2020 was destined to be different but Blogchatter ensured blogging stayed the same. Super fun!

3 If not for my plant family I would have shriveled up. My family showed resilience. My daughter taught me patience.

4 I learned that art, doodling lettering helps in achieving the flow that all kids enjoy. Having fun with Tangi was what kept my creativity watered. It’s all about having fun, right?

5 I read Living Colours by Natalie Goldberg and truly embraced drawing and painting again. Seeing Matisse’s swimming pool was like a window opening up in my soul. His plate glass colored windows and art are awe-inspiring. The colors you can almost touch. This book finally helped me become comfortable with the creative me.I somehow never really did that. The art in COVID times was a sanity saver.

The crazy doodle fun:Using prompts from the Living Colours

6 Steal like an Artist was a welcome read that is helping me fight the imposter syndrome when it comes to creative stuff. I am forever thinking does this prevent me from the rational, scientific work of being a medical doctor that I so enjoy?

7 Then during the COVID 19 thing I realized the art and writing actually help me become more empathetic. I don’t know how that happens but I have now embraced it. The art and science divide is too rigid, making no sense. Everything comes from creative thinking irrespective of subject. For work to be enjoyed I need this fluidity.

8 This website I started in 2014 nothing changed here. So my digital home and work didn’t really face Corona.

8 In  2020 I started my Hindi podcast and hopefully in 2021,I will be able to explore more. More about that later.

9 My favorite app  for 2021 was the Anybooks app

10 YouTube was wonderful for learning all sorts of skills including crocheting, and cooking.I even started sharing my cooking skills as a healthy cook .

11. My husband started blogging to build his own online presence. It makes me happy, when he listens to me about what to tweak.

12 Canva scheduling tool takes away all troubles with social media sharing. If there’s one app which makes my life better, its Canva.I knew nothing about designing stuff. But with Canva anyone can pretty up their work.

13 Ignore Everybody and 39 other keys to Creativity is my current favorite nonfiction. Home truths which all creatives and wannabes should know. But who will bell the cat? Luckily someone already did.

14 I will never take anyone or anything for granted ever again.I met my mom after 9 months of lockdown. It was unbelievable.

15 I am grateful, I  remembered the taste of what my mom used to cook and recreate them in my own kitchen.

16 I love how Tangi made being creative so much easier. Being creative every day is possible with Tangi. A very positive social media for the creative soul.

18 This year we decided to start a small clinic in our husband’s village. The soil which has nurtured us deserves nurturing. Whether it will work or not, no one knows. But we can always have fun trying and learning.

As Lord Krishna says

You have a right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, nor be attached to inaction.

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 2, Verse 47

19 God is amazing and we are all blessed. If not for the blessings of the Gods and Goddesses none of this would be possible. Every day I feel like we are a part of the Percy Jackson series fighting Corona demons in the depths of Tartarus. I am blessed to be alive.

20 I am grateful for my health, my family, and all the work and play I do. Life is short and it has a purpose. We can only connect the dots in retrospect.

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.

  1. This is my first time reading your blog and I want to thank you!

Simply reading your list for what you are grateful for was really touching and many were the same as me. It’s good to look back and notice all the good things, even that came from the “not so great” things of 2020. I am appreciating all that 2021 is bringing to me, including your blog! Love and light!

  2. While 2020 wasn’t the best, I am thankful my family and I made it through. I’m hopeful that 2021 will be much better for all. I’m also looking forward to what you have in store for you blog this year! How wonderful that your husband is also a blogger now! Wishing you and your family nothing but good things and now you can both blog on!
