On our last holiday to Darjeeling one foggy evening, the kids started getting crabby. My husband brought out business and everyone discussed buying, selling, lending, and counting money.
My daughter came up to me and said “Maa guess what? I won. But I almost didn’t. “
I smiled, looking up from my sketch, and asked,” Why the almost?”.
She said her friend had become a young millionaire and was racing to win. But lost all his money and in fact lost the game as a pauper. Me being in instant teach-a-life-lesson-mommy mode asked her,
“Why did he lose all his money?”
“Oh, he took too many loans and then couldn’t pay back. He wasn’t a clever investor and definitely not a smart business player. He won a lot, but then lost even more.”
Me “Hmm, so what did we learn?”
“Save more than you spend. Always.”
This was a game worth playing if such an important life lesson can be learned. So the next day I looked for a few educational games which are not too complicated and can help teach concepts about making earning, investing, and the like. But without overwhelming.
It’s important to have good money habits as a parent if you want to teach them that. Kids learn more from what we do than from what we say. Their little ears and eyes are always picking up information, which creates long-term mindsets and habits.
My mother used to ask us to count out the different amounts for the monthly bills to be paid. We learned about filing income tax because our mother was learning too back then. It was confusing at first, but things got better .I learned to handle money confidently from a young age and always managed to save from the birthday money gifts from our many aunts and uncles. There was no concept of “pocket money”.
The first money I earned was when I worked at a contact lens shop after my twelfth standard and then I started giving tuition. I never looked back. As far back as I can remember I liked the idea of multiple streams of income. That was also the reason I started my blog. I let my daughter help me plan shopping lists and pay vendors when we go shopping. There’s nothing like practical experience and responsibility to teach lessons well.
We grow some of our own vegetables. We also have fruit trees. All this comes at a cost that is difficult to explain to kids.I picked the Farm stimulation game , Idle Farming Business, where you start by choosing a plot of land, planting seeds, and raising and harvesting crops. Then with the proceeds, you can buy more plots and so on. Get the crops ready for processing, then they are sold and you can buy more seeds for the next cycle. The game gives a prompt for you to cycle and plant different crops for a better harvest. It reminds you about harvesting before the rains come. Harvest potatoes first, followed by other vegetables like carrots(we grow this for real), tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, turnips, onions, and corn.
You earn by scrolling over the plot, then you reinvest to improve the farm.
Small farmers face difficulty due to fluctuating rain levels. We discussed collecting rainwater safely to avoid issues while farming. We played the game together with a timer on. Simple gamification of topics does help in clearing difficult and dry topics.
I also like the Real estate games and the coffee shop simulation. The coffee shop is a one-month simulation game where you learn to start, run and manage a business profitably. Kids learn about inventory for the coffee shop, buying coffee, milk, and sugar varieties of each, strategy for marketing, pricing demand, supply consumer feedback
The next game we played together was the Wind and solar sustainable energy game. I am all for hybrid and alternative energy sources. The world can’t go forward without energy and for sustainable energy, we need a plan. That awareness must start right at the beginning when the kids are eager to learn. This wind and solar sustainable energy game is easy to play. Move and position the solar panels to catch the sun optimally. Then you pull up or push down the wind turbine to catch the wind to generate power using a windmill. There is an energy meter to see how much energy you generated. Pretty simple.I wish one day we could all capture energy this way.
The games are simple to play and explain the rules as you play along. The only trouble I faced was it took some time to load on my mobile phone. It’s best if you monitor your kid’s online screen exposure. Because games can become engrossing. That’s the reason I played this game first alone to check whether it’s appropriate for my daughter and then played with her. The internet is useful if used for good. My job as a parent is to teach her to choose right when I am not around. Money skills are taught nowhere. If you don’t teach your child who will?

One thing in the world I want to change is also the stupidest thing people say and do which they are 100% serious about is, “we are cutting down these trees and planting these beautiful saplings for each of them” .
Imagine that? Replacing fully grown shade-giving trees with baby plants. In the case of an adult mango tree, it will take approximately twenty years to reach those dimensions.
Adult trees have deep interconnected root systems which help to hold soil in place, prevent erosion, and floods, and maintain good soil bacteria. They also produce enormous quantities of oxygen which obviously a baby plant can’t produce. Trees support an entire ecosystem of birds, bees, and other animal life which won’t be possible with a baby plant.
The Red Sequoia redwood trees last 3000 years. Sequoia sempervirens are also found in the Indian subcontinent in the Western and Eastern ghats. They can grow up to three hundred feet. The mango tree grows up to 130 feet and can live, and bear fruits for three hundred years. I am lucky that I am able to enjoy the shade of mango trees.
Old trees store more carbon than young ones. They give more oxygen, they give more shade and give more shelter. In this world where technology helps us reach, the moon and Mars why can’t Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mukesh Ambani find ways to save the trees, not lose the forest and make development possible?
I want to make housing, development, possible without losing green cover.I want tree growing to be a part of citizen responsibility. Will planting fruit bearing trees and community vegetable gardens help with hunger problem?Community gardening and community parks can go a long way in helping share and grow green spaces.
Trees helped improve my health and brought wellness and creativity into my life.It didn’t happen suddenly. From 2014 to 2023 ,I have come a long way. From balcony garden to planting activities and our hopes of reforesting barren plots .It’s a journey both outside and inside.
If you want to live better ,do the hard thing .Work towards a greener world, wherever you are.
Is it going to be easy ?No.Is it possible?Yes.

The yellow Hibiscus blooming in the summer sun and playing with her flower friends.I painted this one Sunday morning sitting on the covered porch of my village home. Its painted on cold pressed 300 GSM paper ,using watercolour, gel pens, fine liner pens and acrylics for some derail work. The light passing through the Hibiscus petals makes it look all “glowy”.
The Yellow Hibiscus is supposed to be extremely rare and found only in Hawaii. But it grows well even in West Bengal. It’s said to spread, positivity, love, cheer. Its also to be a sign of good luck and is the official state flower of Hawaii .The Hibiscus is a perennial flower Blooming throughout the year.It can be a shrub or a ten feet tall tree, depending on where you plant it.
I am thankful art came back into my life. I stopped drawing when I was ten.I don’t remember the why.I just stopped going to the art teacher who encouraged me to let my mind go free.Later my mom told me it was a financial decision.End of story ?
Not quite. In 2020 when the world went into hibernation during the pandemic, art came back into my life through Tangi .A much loved companion ,who left forever after changing my life.(Tangi was the social sharing and learning channel for art lovers created by Google ,before YouTube shorts .)
In the picture you can also see the apple red friendly Hibiscus and the Frangipani.Hibiscus in all its colours is a very Indian Summer friendly flower. The classic Indian Red(Chilli Red) Hibiscus lasts only a day and is Goddess Maa Kaali’s favourite flower. You will always find her garlands made of the red Hibiscus ,the big ones.
I am thankful for all my nature friends, the flowers Blooming, fruits ripening, leaves swaying in the breeze make me happy.A few years back I used to write a #ThankfulThursdays blog post every Thursday with many of my blogger friends. It was a time of making new friends and connections, lessons and tests.

I always wanted to be a doctor, since the time I was six.It was a legitimate profession where you could ask as many questions as you wanted,to perfect strangers.Sounded like a calling to a curious chatter box like me.
I am still a chatter box.

Yes I would exercise more and skip the chocolates.
Books are my thing .I became a doctor teacher, blogger, writer, podcaster because of Books and blogs.
I am a nature girl.I absolutely love spending time outdoors surrounded by trees with a gentle breeze blowing, blue sky, flowers smiling with the sound of children’s laughter and play while I go for a walk, paint a picture ,read a book or write .That is my idea of a relaxing time.
I like nature trips .Cities are fun to visit but are not my idea of a relaxing holiday. But I was born and brought up a city girl .
When people abuse tobacco ,drugs, alcohol and then blame the Universe for their misfortune,it’s difficult for me to keep my mouth shut .
I try to be around people who are positive, work hard, loyal, trustworthy and persist. They have all taught me a lot.
If meeting someone makes me feel irritated, upset or unsettled I avoid future meet ups.Just not my thing.
My husband is my strongest supporter and is often the only person who hears about my crazy big goals, impossible wishes and always inspires me to work hard with a smile.
I am a mother,wife of a Pediatrician.I have a sister who is a Geologist .
My Mom ,my aunts and my paternal Grand ma all had full time jobs .My doctor friends who tirelessly serve ,while keeping in touch.
