If you are a mommy you will love wipes. If you are a doctor mommy, you will be obsessive about wipes. If reading labels was a mild habit before I became a mommy then now I am a certified professional now.
The interesting thing about labels is, even when they say something, you may understand something else. When we were in medical college, one of our teachers used to say, only if people washed their hands with water, many diseases could be avoided. That stuck my head. Several national guidelines mention using water only for cleaning babies nappy area. But when it comes to babies, it’s not just their bottoms that need cleaning. Babies can attract dust and dirt like a vacuum cleaner.
In this post I tell you:
What do I want in my Baby wipe?
7 Important things to know about Wipes for Baby
What will a mom do? Not let them play? Not let them be exposed to dirt? In India with the hot and humid climate in most places, this is difficult. It gets worse when they start coloring, painting, going to school. My daughter loves all kinds of artwork, and her hands get dirty with colors. Now in winters, I used to worry about excessive hand washing. So we made a simple system of always having wipes in hand and just getting the gunk off. Before meals wash well with soap and water.
But even then, I found two issues.
- One of the popular wipes had a fragrance.
- They left the hand dried out.
- Some contained PEG in undisclosed amounts. When children are teething, this can be a problem.

7 Important things to know about Wipes for Baby
Alcohol-free doesn’t mean PEG free.PEG is technically a glycol, not alcohol. But if a product contains PEG they have to mention it.
For skin products, PEG can be used in concentrations up to 1% safely. Unfortunately, most products with PEG fails to mention the percentage on the packaging. Interestingly Johnson and Himalaya both list PEG in the ingredient list.
- The fragrance is not a good thing.
- Eco-friendly a biodegradable are words to note.
- The European Commission recommends, that products containing harsh surfactants, such as sodium lauryl sulfate, should be avoided.
- Wipes should contain pH buffers to maintain slight acidity(pH 5.5).
It should be free of irritants such as alcohol, fragrance, essential oils, soap, and harsh detergents (e.g., sodium lauryl sulfate); they should contain well‐tolerated preservatives.
