Little children are curious and naughty.
I wrote 10 Things you should not let your children play with to create awareness about accidental swallowing of objects .
Today I discuss about the variety of things ,that children put in their ear.Things in ear doesn’t sound as scary as those in the food or air pipe .But can be equally bad ,causing lifelong problem.
What can they put inside their ear?
- Small beads
- Muri(puffed rice)
- Seeds
- Button
- Button battery
- Chalk
- Rubber
- Crayon pieces and any thing that catches their fancy ,inside their ears.
- Sometimes insect get inside .
What can happen if an untrained person tries to remove it?
At the least ,laceration in the ear canal.
The object can get stuck or impacted the ear canal.
It can travel further inside the ear canal .
If it’s beyond the isthmus ,it might need surgical removal
It might be pushed into the middle ear, rupturing the tympanic member .
What’s the major problem when this happens ?
The child can have pain in ear.
Feeling of obstruction.
If the ear canal is ruptured , hearing will be affected.
If the object enters the middle ear ,ossicles may be damaged .This can cause hearing loss. If the stapes bone is injured in any way ,severe dizziness and vomiting ,with permanent hearing loss may occur.
If it’s a button battery ,the leaching chemical can destroy the hearing system .It can be also life threatening.
What should you do if your child inserts an object in the ear?
Visit the nearest hospital with an ENT emergency.
Visit your ENT doctor.
What should you not do?
No forcible removal .That’s the first rule.
Do not attempt removal of object by yourself.
Don’t use sharp object to attempt removal.
Don’t take the child to a quack.
Take him or her to the nearest hospital with an ENT emergency.
Foreign bodies in ear should only be removed by a trained ENT doctor.
Do not give water ,oil ,or ear drop in the ear .If it’s a vegetable object like seed ,it may swell up and get stuck .
Do you have any stories of objects put in the ear by kids ?

A few years back my son stuck a long lego peg into my daughter’s ear. He damaged her eardrum and although she didn’t lose hearing, she suffers from a loud ringing in her ear. It has grown a bit faint, but still there and it has been three years already.
dramrita says
Yes its unfortunate .I am sure your daughter will get better with time I’d it has already grown faint. We just need to be aware .But kids will be kids

Reading your post reminds me of my brother when he was 4 years old, when he playfull swallowed a glass marble, and he is smiling AF. Eventually he pooped it. That’s when we felt relieved.

Wow. I just don’t know what to say. Thankfully when my daughter was young she never stuck something like that in her ear. And now she’s old enough to know better.

So far mine hasn’t put anything on his ear. He did put a popcorn seed on his nose. I just cover one side of the nose and asked him to blow really hard! Thankfully the seed came out quick. I was honestly freaking out.

Eek! This is so scary! I have three little ones and have thought about them putting all sorts of stuff in their mouths or even up their nose, but not in their ears! Thank you for the tips!

This has always freaked me out. My 4 year old has yet to put anything in her ears, but I am so nervous about if/when she does!
dramrita says
Hopefully he will not

This post actually highlights the severity that most of us may not be aware. I definitely feel glad to have read this and gained insight

Excellent list of what to do and not to do. Kids are so funny. They never surprise me with the silly stuff they do that ends up costing a fortune.

My sone used to stick things in his nose when he was a toddler. Beads, and cotton stuffing from teddy bears. He’d scare me half to death doing that. I took my time and took it out, but I dined like him doing that for sure.

Helpful advice! I am always so fearful of things getting stuck in my own ears by ACCIDENT. I forget that kids sometimes choose to stick things in there voluntarily haha 🙂

Yikes! I am so glad my kids never did this. I would not have been amused at all.

Ahh yes… I distinctly remember putting a bean in my ear when I was about 6 or 7. Why??? I do not know. But somehow my parents got it out themselves. Not the right way to do it, I know. Thank goodness we’re all much wiser now! LOL!
