When I first shifted to a small town I was struck by how nongreen my views were. I could see a sliver a sky and other people’s windows.
It was brown grey and depressing. Then I read a book called Love the home you have by Melissa. It is a mindset altering book. It talks about how you and I look forward to living in our own homes one day and forget to live.
Our entire life is spent planning that one home we will be one day own.
But when you are bringing up a family you need to live with love. You need to make your home peaceful, welcoming and loving.
Home decor is not for other people it’s for you.
When I look outside the window anywhere in my house I see green
Outside my window, it’s a green view.
I have Alamunda
Nayantara
Aloe Vera
Basil
Nayantara
Areca palm
Calendula,petunia,impatients during winter.
What’s my favorite potting material now?
Coco peat which is pretreated for use is perfect for my balcony gardening needs.
Why terracotta?
It lets the roots breathe.
It’s ecofriendly
It’s a good way to support local artisan

When I was young we lived in a big house with a garden in front and a compound behind which had many trees. The garden in front was my area to plot and plan and decide what plants I wanted. When I got married and moved to an apartment, I missed my garden so much. That is when I created my window garden. It really is a lovely soothing sight. Every home I have moved into in later years meant another window garden. This house has more windows and I happily experiment with planting all sorts of things.
Dr.Amrita Basu(MBBS,MS) says
Thats such a lovely memory Sunita.Would love to see your window garden one day.
Sunita Saldhana says
You are always welcome

I visited your blog over the weekend but couldn’t comment. I think a garden makes a world of difference to the house both aesthetically and healthwise. Green is calming and even planting a small pot makes one happy. Unfortunately fear of dengue makes me restrict my balcony garden, else I’d have had a forest by now
Dr.Amrita Basu(MBBS,MS) says
If there is no water loggig mosquito doesn’t breed.Like in my house or balcony I have also planted citronella grass to naturally prevent modquito.
Thanks for visiting.

Amazing! I absolutely love balcony gardens! But I feel guilty about travelling when I leave them unattended for days. I am interested in looking into self watering plants. I think I might need your help sometime soon.
Dr.Amrita Basu(MBBS,MS) says
Oh yes.We travel a lot and my inlaws or neighbours are both kind enough to water and feed the fishes. The planters are helpful but limited.
Obsessivemom says
How wonderful Amrita. Loved your garden and what an amazing range of plants you have. I do have greens outside my window but mostly non-flowering non-fruiting variety because we don’t get as much sun as that would require. But I do love each of them.
Dr.Amrita Basu(MBBS,MS) says
Green is greeen even if no flowers and fruits I love seeing green.

I really wish for a balcony garden and an indoor garden but I don’t have a green thumb. Outside my window, all I see is teh generator and a few plans before the apartment complex boundary. Sigh!
Dr.Amrita Basu(MBBS,MS) says
Yes, that doesn’t sound very inspiring!
Reema D'souza says
That is so lovely. Even I wish to have a lovely green space outside my house but it is a little difficult staying in a rented accommodation and the neighbors dogs harming the plants.
Dr.Amrita Basu(MBBS,MS) says
Thats a problem.I too live in a rental and the only pet I have are my Goldfishes!
