Cyclone Fani is the strongest Cyclone seen since 1976. Last severe cyclone was in 1966 and 1976( IMDA data)
Emergency services in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal are on high alert. Orissa is on red alert where the cyclone has hit on 3rd May. It has a speed of 200Kmper hour. Tropical storms with speed between 165 -235 Km/per hour are classified as severely destructive winds
The National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP), central government, India’s east coast is one of the six most cyclone-prone areas in the world. The cyclones arising from the Bay of Bengal are more severe than that from the Arabian Sea.

What’s being done
A massive evacuation is being done in Orrisa and danger areas of West Bengal.
Navy warships are deployed
21NDRF Team and
4000 personnel deployed.
Disaster management teams are on stand by.The army, navy, and the Government is tracking the storm’s progress and taking measures to keep people safe
Important Dos and Dont’s
Switch on the local news channel on the radio
Keep your phones charged.
Keep valuable documents and money in waterproof packets.
Keep door and windows closed
Check your Emergency Kit
Tell your neighbors and friends about the cyclone alert.
Switch off power supplies.Electric and gas
Fill buckets with water in case water supply and electricity gets cut off.
Avoid circulating fake news. Check government sites for updates.
Shut and bar all doors and windows.Glass windows need to be secured with brown tape to hold shattered glass in place
Keep handy water purification tablets
Take shelter in the strongest part of the house Under a strong bed, table or mattress. Not under a glass table.
Beware of the eye of the storm. Don’t venture out if there’s a sudden calm between a raging storm.
After the storm:
Drink boiled water, use water purifying tablets.
Don’t venture out without getting all clear from the local administration.
