“We Are the Art” by Brandon Sanderson — a powerful commencement speech he delivered at Brigham Young University in 2023.I didn’t hear it in 2023 I read it on his blog in 2026.Even if you don’t agree with what he says about AI(it was 2023 ,that’s like stone ages in AI years),you will still understand what he says about creating art. Art and the artist is often inseparable.Be it fiction or nonfiction its very difficult to mask your true feelings, mindset when you write or create in any form.
We are truly the art …but only if you let it be. Since I wanted to share his core concept without this looking like a rip off I am sharing the link to his blog post about the topic.

Sanderson argues that:
Human beings are not just creators of art — we ourselves are the art.
Our lives, choices, failures, growth, relationships, and moral struggles are the real masterpiece. His idea is not new but his way of saying surely is. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and Stephen King’s On writing both inspires the writer to find nuggets from inside themselves. The raw material is always the artist and how you shape that raw material becomes your art.
Key Ideas from Sanderson’s Speech
1️⃣ Life Is Creative Work :
He compares living a meaningful life to creating art. That way we are all work in progress …never quite done. Perfection is just a mindset .
- It takes revision
- It takes failure
- It takes experimentation
- It takes time and patience
Just like writing a novel (which he knows intimately), life requires drafts and rewrites.
2️⃣ Failure Is Part of the Process
As an author, Sanderson faced:
- Multiple rejections
- Years before success
- Unpublished manuscripts
His message:
Your “failed drafts” are not wasted. They shape the final version of you.
3️⃣ Intentional Living
Art doesn’t happen accidentally. You have to choose to draw, paint ,write ,sing dance, craft.Whatever it takes do it .How you shape your life depends on the choices you make and the people you interact with on a daily basis. Its not easy to choose
- Character
- Integrity
- Kindness
- Courage
These must be chosen deliberately. You sculpt yourself by your daily decisions.
4️⃣ You Matter More Than Your Output
He emphasizes that:
- Your worth ≠ your productivity
- Your value ≠ your resume
- Your identity ≠ your success metrics
The real masterpiece is who you become, not what you produce. Your life is the journey ,the real deal because the ultimate destination for all of us is the same. What matters is what you give to society during that journey.
5️⃣ Community as Co-Creators
We don’t create ourselves alone. You are the sum of the five people you associate with most frequently and here lies the crux of the matter.Choose your company with care.
- Family
- Mentors
- Friends
- Society
All help “paint” parts of us. But ultimately, you choose the direction of the brush. You decide.
“The most important work of art you will ever create is yourself.” That my dear readers is my takeaway from this wonderful keynote speech. Do you believe you are a work of art ?Let me know i the comments below.
