Hello my dear readers!!!
Welcome back to another review in which I throw in as much sarcasm as humanely possible and then expect nobody to get annoyed!
🙂
Anyways, ignoring the dramatics for the time being, I have done it again. I’ve read yet another extremely hyped and popular book. The results? Well, you’ll see it eventually. Now, what’s the book?
Powerless by Lauren Roberts!
(I mean it is written in the title but whatever)
First of all, I’ll give you a little summary of the book without spoilers. Basically a short-ish blurb.
Powerless by Lauren Roberts is situated in a dangerous fantasy world in which the Elites have all the powers. Literally. They do have magical powers! They can be mind readers, or they can control objects around them (Wingardium Leviosa core), or control water, fire etc etc. The most dangerous are the Silencers who can ‘silence’ the elite’s powers
You get the point. And then there are those who have no powers. Normal human beings are called ‘ordinaries’. In the kingdom of Ilya, there once was a terrible plague that killed off almost everyone, and afterwards, for some reason, the ordinaries were banished to a sandy realm because apparently they were ‘infectious and could diminish the elite’s powers’.
Our protagonist is a girl called Paedyn Gray, who ironically does infact have hair which is greyish-silver. She is, unfortunately, completely ordinary. She and her friend Adena live on the streets in secrecy together. Adena is a seamstress and earns money by selling the clothes she makes, and Paedyn is a pickpocket.
One day, she manages to steal from one of the Princes of Ilya, Kai, and also technically befriends him after she saved him from being turned into an ordinary by a silencer. She is then known as ‘the silver saviour.’
Due to this bravery on Paedyn’s part, she is chosen to be a contestant in the Purging trials, a brutal game showcasing the elite’s powers. However, the issue is, she has no powers at all. And if anybody comes to know about it? Well the rest would be history.
Now she has to not only pretend to have powers but also to survive the entire trials without anybody finding out she’s a ordinary.
Point is, will she actually live?
I’m so sorry but its so overhyped 😭
The reviews were all raving. There’s also a lot of controversy about Powerless having copied the Red Queen. Since I haven’t read the latter, I can’t judge that. But to be honest, even if it was plagiarised, it still wouldn’t be a five-star book for me.
What did I love?
Paedyn’s features. I mean, silver hair is pretty unique for a female main character. As far as descriptions go Mare of Red Queen too had partly silver hair and was slightly darker-skinned. Lauren Roberts made Paedyn fair, with freckles and blue eyes. Also Adena!! She was such a sweetheart and the details about her liking sticky buns were really cute.
Interestingly, I liked the action at the end. It was more engaging than the entire first 3/4th of the book. Another pretty cool detail is the dresses Paedyn wore to the balls. I loved the descriptions of those, and am totally going to draw them later.
The cons:
Now here is me explaining my points to all the powerless defenders:
- I feel like Paedyn the FMC is sometimes just too….ugh. I mean, she was all like, “I’m going to fit in during the trials and make sure to be friendly and obedient and normal.” And then proceeded to wear a dress totally different from the dress code EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I mean, girl, at this point its your fault if the people of Ilya are pitting against you. Its like: Paedyn the entire kingdom is wearing green. So, wear green. And she just goes nah I’m going to wear silver to remind the people of their ✨Silver Saviour ✨. And she’s supposed to be so confident and witty but her comebacks are just….meh.
- She basically forgot about her bestie Adena until she needed a seamstress. And even then there’s basically not much conversation between them, so I’m going to assume it never happened.
- I don’t think its possible for somebody to fall ‘in love’ with someone else the moment they meet..? Like Kai and Paedyn’s first interaction was already slightly unnerving and the next when she ‘saves him’ its possibly worse. Nobody gets that ‘obsessed’ and ‘comfortable’ as quickly as they both did. And I’m sorry, but there was no character development at all.
- I didn’t really ‘hate’ Blair. Its obvious the author wanted her to be the most disliked character and all but there wasn’t much of her appearance for me to really understand.
- Characters like Sadie and Andie seemed really intriguing, but there were virtually no scenes including them. Suddenly, BOOM, both die!
- The Purging trials. First of all, its basically just the trials in hunger games, but…poorly written. Even some of the scenes match. The ‘finding a bow and arrow’, eating ‘rabbit and hare’ and seeing reflections of themselves, having hallucinations, etc., etc. Its like Katniss but without all the things that make her so iconic. Also, there is basically no reason for the trials..? There was actually a dystopian reason in the THG trilogy and here it’s just… non-existent. AND WHY would someone as important as Kai want to risk his life for it?
- What even was the ‘plague’? There is no actual description in it and its just Paedyn flinching everytime she hears the word.
- If Paedyn’s father, Calum, had powers, how is she completely…ordinary?
- Sometimes I couldn’t even understand what on earth Paedyn was going on about because every time she looks at Kitt she’s like ‘I see the king’s green eyes reflected back at me..’ and she also says the same thing when she sees his father king Eldric. During her ‘final boss battle’ I didn’t even realise it was Edric until he started swinging his sword. Also what even was Kitt’s dual ability? Like girlie just kept mentioning ‘that dual ability of his’ what IS IT??
So… that’s it I guess. I feel like if Lauren put in the same amount of action she did in the end at the beginning this book wouldn’t have been just ‘popular’. It would have had a whole lot of improvement.
Anyways, if you like reading bestselling books, you can read it, but even as a teen I felt something was off.I had high expectations I guess. No hate to the people who like this series though, its totally your opinion 🙂
Well, signing off for today! Goodbye fellow readers, until we meet again!
