Orchids The International School Implements CBSE’s ‘Sugar Board’ Directive; Strengthens Existing Nutrition-Focused Initiatives
Rolls out informative Sugar Boards across campuses to build awareness on added sugar intake
Reinforces long-standing practices like balanced school meals and low-sugar hydration options
Empowers students with hands-on food education through farm-to-plate and nutrition learning
National, May 20, 2025: In response to the CBSE’s recent directive urging schools to establish ‘Sugar Boards’ to address the growing concern of childhood diabetes, Orchids The International School has announced the implementation of a comprehensive Sugar Awareness initiative across its campuses. This move complements the school’s ongoing commitment to nutrition-first education and student well-being.
Speaking on the rollout, Vijay Sreedhar, Culinary Head, Orchids The International School shared, “At Orchids, we believe the classroom extends all the way to the cafeteria. Nutrition isn’t an add-on—it’s an essential part of learning. CBSE’s ‘Sugar Board’ initiative validates the importance of what we’ve been championing for years: helping children understand what’s on their plate, and why it matters. By integrating farm-to-plate experiences, balanced nutritional meals, and now structured sugar awareness tools, we’re not just reducing sugar—we’re raising consciousness. Our goal is to nurture a generation that doesn’t just eat healthy, but thinks healthy.”
Speaking on the implementation, Naresh Ramamurthy, National Academic Head, Orchids The International School said, “These Sugar Boards will provide daily sugar intake guidelines, charts showing sugar content in everyday foods and beverages, and student-led tips and insights. We already have a strict no-junk-food policy on campus, and this initiative takes our commitment further. With nutritionist-led workshops, interactive challenges, and a phased reduction in sugar consumption, we aim to empower students to make healthier, more informed choices that will benefit them well into adulthood.”
Over the years, Orchids has already implemented a series of structured, health-centric initiatives, like:
Balanced School Meals: Orchids’ meal program meets approximately 70% of a child’s daily nutritional needs, offering a carefully curated mix of macro and micronutrients with minimal use of processed sugars
Smart Beverage Options: The school serves Waterfull, a premium flavoured water with 80% less sugar than conventional drinks, promoting hydration without high sugar intake
Farm-to-Plate Model: As India’s first school group to integrate hydroponic and polyhouse farming, students grow vegetables used in their own meals—reinforcing sustainability and nutrition
Food Education Modules: Through projects, classroom discussions, and culinary sessions, students gain critical knowledge on healthy eating habits
Through these proactive steps, Orchids The International School continues to lead by example in fostering a generation that values health, balance, and informed decision-making.

Green Hero of India Dr.Radhakrishna Nair
I wrote about the Miyawaki forest few years back and now Kutch in Gujrat has the right example of it grown in four years by India’s green hero Dr.Radhakrishna .K. Nair.
When we visited Udaipur,Jodhpur and Jaisalmer this December we were surprise to see how green the cities were.Infact the once green West Bengal is way greyer in it’s urban areas then ever before compared to Jodhpur. No wonder the April temperature is soaring!
Dr.Nair has created more than 115 green Miyawaki forests. He has aptly founded the group called forest creators.
A Japanese method where there’s multiple benefits to environment and population. It includes –
- Rainwater conservation,
- soil conservation,
- environment conservation,
- carbon absorption increases,
- lowers local temperature,
- increased oxygen supply,
- water conservation
- Ecological conservation and biodiversity enhanced
- Provides employment
- Provides green cover
- Reduces temperature
- overall helps environment fight drastic climate change and build for a sustainable future
He has built the largest forest in Kutch which is part if a Memorial for the 2001 Bhuj earthquake victims .The Smriti Van.
More than six lakh trees of 117 varieties are planted here.
He is also behind the largest Miyawaki forest next to a seashore at Nargol.
When I saw this tweet/X by MrAnand Mahindra,I couldn’t help but share this .
Afforestaty by Suvendu Sharma and Gourav Gurjar are a team of forest entrepreneurs who are creating urban Forests all over the world .Their series on creating Forests is available on youtube. They are generously sharing the knowledge they gained and I hope more and more people come forward.
Good Choice makes Positive Change!
Describe one positive change you have made in your life.
The choices I make daily ,each of them have the potential to change my life.If the change is for the good ,it’s definitely a positive change.
When I decided I would be cooking during the pandemic,it was a spur of the moment decision. The lockdown meant the cook couldn’t come and this continued for two years until one day ,I realized we were all cooking as a family.
Initially it was survival food and then I started baking bread, cookies and kachori. It was one of the best decisions I made .
But one habit I started in childhood which changed my life is Reading books .C.S Lewis explained this perfectly through this quote –
“I can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”

What’s the most fun way to Exercise?
What’s the most fun way to exercise?
Swimming, weight lifting followed by calisthenics is easily the most fun way to exercise for me.Gardening on the other hand is absolutely effortless, time flies and you end up with beautiful flowers and fresh fruits, veggies for your kitchen! It’s a win win.I also have a constant companion;my treadmill with a DIY table which I use for lazy days when I write and walk very slowly. But I also like going for nature walks and hiking with my friends. That’s a lot of fun.K
If you want to keep your body as a whole, heart and brain healthy then there’s nothing like exercise.
But the problem is you can’t only do one thing .You may do one thing, but its not fun ,not sustainable and plain boring .In winters I don’t swim so the others comes in use .
I first started lifting weights in my late teens. Then there was a long gap and I started again seriously in 2017 and that’s a part of my weekly routine. But since I do it at home ,it’s limited in it’s extent and fun quotient. But I like using different things like dumb-bells,kettle bells and recently I got a mudgar!
Calisthenics is something I started doing since last year.I can only do L sits properly now but I am focusing on doing that well
Why do I want exercise to be fun? That’s like wanting to read for fun!Well I do read for fun and that’s why I know exercising is the best way to release the good endorphins, look good and feel great. Its also an underappreciated way of keeping your gut health great.
Plus exercising and muscle building is still the only scientifically proven way of ageing gracefully maintaining, flexibility, mobility and strength .If it’s one thing I have diligently focused on in my life as a doctor mommy, is walking the talk. You can listen to my Audiobook “How to Walk Write and Garden for the Healthy Life You Want , where I talk about this and more!
