Bridge course for Ayush Doctors available! Would you like to get treated? Do you think death and diseases differentiate between rich and poor? Do you think the rural poor deserve worse healthcare?

Do you think the middle class deserves to be treated by quacks? Do you feel healthcare should be accessible and quality for everyone?

Do you feel you deserve to know what will happen to you if you visit any tier 2,3 cities towns and villages? As a Medical teacher in a small town in India, should I stop living here and treating poor patients? Should they be destined to be treated by Ayush doctors with a crash course in medicines and given a license to treat patients? In case a complication arises due to such treatment, will the Government take full responsibility for medical negligence?

If the decision rests with the State Government, will the state Government pay damages for disability, death, and negligence? I have spent nineteen years studying and still study, this will be taught in six months? As a doctor, I know this is serious. If there is a reason for the stringent eligibility tests for pre-medical and post-grad medical seats, why such a fish-eyed view about the health care of the masses?

Three things you should know as a rare Indian

1)If you are reading this post, that means you are an educated Indian and have above average IQ and income.

2)You already have access to quality health care and you have never been treated by a Quack.

3)If you don’t stand up to this health care crisis, a day will come when politicians will ensure only they get treated by Doctors with Medical degrees and all others by bridge course doctors. Not a Doomsday theory just simple logic.

Why is the Government doing this?

There is a real Crisis of Doctors.
A high attrition rate of Doctors.
Challenging health care infrastructure, manpower, and bursting population.
Inability to think straight due to air, water, sound, and food pollution.
Brain suffering from Low oxygen saturation in capital city Delhi?
The Government think tanks are being misled by people with a vested interest?
The Government really wants to solve the healthcare crisis.

The answer is for them to know and you to guess.

Why endanger poor people?

These bridge course doctors will be placed in Midlevel care providers in sub-health centers. This means people who are poor will be denied quality healthcare, have poorer health, spend more money on controversial health advice and suffer eventually. Those who need help most will suffer most. Sigh!

Mainstreaming Ayush? This step is unlikely to help. It will only increase distrust and cause this ancient system to lose goodwill. Because Ayush has a role in Holistic wellness which makes it unique.

If mainstreaming Ayush is the intention, why not setup Ayush subcentres and let people visit those of their own free will and get treated. Why not open Ayush Hospitals with Ayush nurses, physicians, and surgeons. Whatever it is, gambling with the health of the nation needs someone to take responsibility. The Centre has very smartly passed the ball to the State Government, now who will roll the dice?

Cabinet removes Bridge course for Ayush Practitioners.

Instead, the responsibility of promoting and meeting the need for healthcare in the States has been delegated to the State Government. So if the question now is can Ayush doctors practice allopathy? The answer is still no for most parts of India. But in a few states, the State Government for some strange reason allowed this.

Can Homeopathy Practice Allopathy?

The answer is No.

Answer: NO.

Walking and Writing Connection:Treadmill Desk

During my UG days when I went out on a date with my then BF now hubby, we used to walk around and round and talk. Let me rephrase it was more often, I talked and he listened. For me, that was the direct line to my heart. I fell in love walking with him, while the poor dear bravely listened to all my random dreams and worries and carried my satchel.

Walking for me always had a special place.I used to walk after dinner for one hour inside the Safdarjung hospital campus. We were married, staying in the doctor’s hostel and the post-dinner walk was a great chance to meet and catch up with friends. So both mind and body refreshed. Studying acres of notes, tons of books and writing fresh notes, was easier with this one hour of relaxing walk.

In 2013 I started my new job and shifted to my hubby’s hometown with a 10-month-old baby and full-time job. Mad days but blessed ones. With a small child and no pedestrian walkways walking was anything but fun. Luckily I had a treadmill that was collecting dust for sometimes. My hubby suggested I start using it. That was 2014.

I started blogging in 2014 too.I wrote once a month and struggled with writing. Things changed when I clubbed my treadmill, with a DIY wooden plank and made it my writing spot too.

That’s what I have learned. Writing while walking, makes me feel good and positive and avoid the traps of weak back and poor BMR due to endless sitting.

The treadmill cum standing desk hack

Multitasking is frowned upon. I like mindfulness for most things I do.
What if it prevents lifestyle diseases? This habit of mine lets me walk more and write more. I am clubbing something I resist doing(walking on Treadmill), with something I love doing(writing ).A result, I walk as much as I write, when I write.

That’s when I am on the treadmill I get more work done on the blog, than when I am sitting. Even if I walk slowly at 2 Km per hour, I am walking 2 Km in one hour and writing too. That’s exciting!

Sitting is bad for your health. While the treadmill desk is not for everyone, you should definitely think of using a standing desk. It’s not about calories it’s about your spine, back, and leg muscles. The stronger they are, they will help you more. The weaker they are, your brain will waste resources worrying about them.

Creativity needs nurturing. Walking is as much an exercise for your body as it is for your mind. Even now I go on trips to places with good nature walks. I feel starting walking again together with my gardening has both helped me write.

While walking, my brain becomes calmer and my thoughts more organized. The result is, I write more and quickly. Walking and typing on the laptop, somehow makes the writing quick.I edit and add pics later. But do all rough drafts on the treadmill. Working this way is easier for me.

Bridge Course Ayush Doctors or Ayush Doctors?(Part 2) #NMCBill

Doctors are struggling to give care. The overburdened state is the reason cited for all healthcare problems. But will shortcut work? Does the jugaad mentality work in this case? I admire the Governments dedication towards spreading the light of health, education, and entrepreneurship in India. But the NMC bill is going to challenge the trust of the very rural poor, Government wants to help. The backward deserve as good a care, as the not- so-backward. They also deserve to know the truth.

Ayush doctors are trained in a different branch of healing than modern medical practitioners. There’s a reason for this. Courses offered in the Ayush entrance exams are Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga, and Naturopathy and Homeopathy. There are some more, but they don’t get an MBBS whatever they learn.

The interesting thing about Ayush is, it’s a branch with tremendous promise. It has the potential to spread wellness into the life of everyone which modern medicine can overlook. But the problem is when you mix up stuff. Its great to innovate, but with care.

On one hand, there’s a claim that Ayush is the most complete and perfect branch of medical sciences. That does take a load off the shoulders of modern medical practitioners. But then I wonder, why Ayush practitioners don’t want to maintain the sanctity of their branches. If they have complete faith in it, why this want to practice modern allopathy?

Why not help Ayush reach the farthest corners of India’s healthcare frame and make dedicated Ayush subcentres, Ayush Hospitals, Ayush emergency, trauma care, Speciality, and superspecialities? Why mix it all up? Bridge course will cause confusion and irreparable damage. Let Ayush practitioners heal with their own sciences.

I am working in a small town in India and I know that there is a need for doctors urgently. But when the going gets tough, you need to decide with care. Just because people are poor, doesn’t mean they deserve any less right to choose. Give them a choice to visit Ayush subcentres and I am sure they will be helped. But not Ayush bridge coursed into Allopaths.

You should have a problem with that. If you don’t have a problem, remember this day when you are reading this post, you will regret not sharing this.

IMA’s call for action was responded very well to by doctors across the country today. The withdrawal of non emergency services affected patients in almost all major states, especially in tier 2,3,4 cities and towns.

IMA National President Dr Ravi Wankhedkar claimed a moral victory over the Government. IMA’s call against the NMC Bill has generated awareness in doctors community and understanding amongst common people. Many ordinary people identified themselves with the cause for which the doctors were fighting. “The Struggle will continue” said he. Actually withdrawal of non-emergency services was only a warning signal to the Government. IMA will intensify its agitation if the government tries to bulldoze this Pro-rich Anti-democratic, Anti federal NMC bill which will promote corruption. We want the Government to reconsider the current bill. We APPEAL to our hon Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji to intervene to protect the interest of marginalized & underprivileged sections of the society.

Dr Ravi Wankhedkar pointed out that 50% of the seats in the private medical colleges will go to the highest bidder. He reiterated that this issue is an issue of the common man. There was a necessity for the community to wake up. The cost of medical education in the country will escalate many fold, and will become unaffordable to even the upper middle classes of people. Taste of what was to come was seen in Uttarkhand and Maharashtra where the management raised the fee to around 25 Lakhs per year for MBBS.

Marginalisation of State Governments, State Medical councils, State Health universities and state medical graduates cannot be ignored. It is a direct threat to the federal nature of our constitution. The state governments should take up the cause which IMA is fighting for. Institutions of excellence like the Medical council are a temple of democracy and represent the true plural nature of the country.

The common final year Exit exam is a conceptional flaw violating the Universities Act. Between the EXIT exam and the NEET the students will become the cannon fodder. More so the students from OBC, SC and ST.

Dr A Marthanda Pillai, Action committee chairman said that NMC will function as an extended Government department. Autonomy of regulation is the right of medical profession. Allowing beaurocrates and non medical persons to trample with the regulation of medical education and practice is a nightmare.

Dr R N Tandon Honorary Secretary General of IMA said that IMA was getting ready for a long struggle. Efforts were on to get all the speciality organisations, Resident Doctors Organisations, Service Doctors Organisations and Medical Students to join in the next phase.

Dr Ravi Wankhedkar IMA National President said that the trust imposed by IMA on the Prime Minister by partnering AYUSHMAN BHARAT was lost in the NMC quagmire. He expressed confidence that the medical fraternity would have the last word on how the profession would be governed.

The course is tough.

The exams are tougher.

Real life where you treat patients, knowing that only one percent of the diseases in this world actually have proven cure may be overwhelming if you are not prepared.

Community Medicine is a very important subject taught in the third year of Medical College Undergrad training.It’s a very important subject where the role of inclusive community practices for sustainable and better health care practices are taught.The practical.involves visiting urban slums to spread awareness about health issues like mosquito-borne water-borne diseases.First steps treat diarrhea, Malaria, Dengue.It also teaches us the role of overcrowding pollution and poor socioeconomic and educational status play a role in healthcare.

It also teaches that Cleanliness is next to Godliness.Helping out in immunization clinics, are also a part if the training.The transition from lecture theatres to harsh reality can be mind-numbing without adequate preparation.This is an also, the subject which will teach you the concept of Universal Health coverage and why Healthcare needs to be inclusive.The exam for this is Third Professional MBBS part 1.

Cardiology and CTVS are both Super specialty subjects needing further studies after Post-Graduation.

This is another tough qualifying exam in your battle to get those letters after your name.While Cardiology mainly deals with the medical management of heart diseases.Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery involves surgical interventions of conditions involving Heart-lung and Thorax.Both require dedicated back-breaking training, experience, high-quality setup and fully qualified support staff for future practice.

D for Diploma and Degree

While both Degree and Diploma are postgraduate qualification and requires you to clear entrance examinations there are grey areas.A diploma is a two years course and makes you eligible for Government services needing post grad qualifications in some states.You can do a senior residency for a full period of 3 years after a Diploma for a boost to your CV and experience.But it may make teaching jobs in Medical Colleges challenging.A degree is preferred and has a mandatory three years training.

When I initially thought of writing this post, I wasn’t sure how much I should say. Should I talk about the not so good and painful parts? Or should I just focus on the beauty of giving birth which is akin to a miracle? That’s the one time you feel like a superwoman.

I finally thought that it would be a good idea to share the whole of my experience.What helped me and what guided my soul and how I prepared for what was going to be the most important journey of my life.

15 Startling Truths No One Tells You About Giving Birth

#1 While giving birth is a miracle, the pain is real. Be ready for the pain. The good news is that it doesn’t pain all the time, but when it does, it hurts really bad. You will crave sedation and loads of painkillers. Unfortunately, all of that is not good for the baby. So, there will be some pain before, during or after.This is what you need to know about giving birth for the first time.

Be ready for the immense warm, fuzzy love spreading through your body and numbing the pain. The love you will feel for your child can compare to nothing. It’s when you become a mother that you know how fiercely protective you can be.

#2 Being a mommy is the most significant adventure and the hardest challenge. All of you who are mothers know that the best way to get ready for normal delivery is to attend antenatal birthing classes. Learning this with your partner is going to be the best experience. If not spouse at least a friend who can be with you during these classes helps to a great deal. Making a baby and giving birth-both need help.

Unfortunately, you will find few places in India focusing on this aspect of maternity care. But this goes a long way in making your body ready for giving birth. So, the effort of looking up and attending these classes is totally worth it.

Antenatal classes and guidance is something Sitaram Bhartia Hospital in New Delhi is trying to stress on. Ethical practices, the disclosure of normal delivery and cesarean rates, transparency in patient feedback policies are their USP. As a doctor, I know that fetal monitoring during delivery is one of the parameters by which the decision for the type of birth is arrived at. Their exceptional normal delivery rate of 88% (2016) shows the expertise and dedication of their doctors to the cause.

While exploring the services they offered, I saw that their cesarean rates for moms with a prior normal delivery, with a single baby in the head-down position who cross 37 weeks is < 2%. Now this one sounds complicated but is again proof of the ability of their doctors to choose the right case for each type of delivery. Knowing when to choose which procedure on a case to case basis makes pregnancy and childbirth a miracle and a challenge. The right doctor to patient ratio, transparent costs, and ethical practices is how this hospital set the right example of how maternal and child care facilities should operate.

#3 Your spouse will be a new parent too. Don’t expect him to know everything. Just like you, he is learning. Grow a few patient bones because you will need all of them.

#4 When I was planning a baby, I was working in Delhi. I was a typical ‘doctor going to be the mommy’- incessantly worrying about everything under the sun. While finding the best gynecologist in Delhi was easy, what wasn’t easy is finding a good nanny to train.

If you are a working mom, please accept that you will need help. Talk to friends, neighbors about good nanny centers and daycare. Even better try to start a daycare facility at your workplace, with support from management Nowadays corporates want to help retain sincere and intelligent woman in their workforce, so this may work out. If not try to leverage work at home options with few office visits.

All this sounds premature when the baby is inside. But believe me, this is what will steal your sleep for the next several years.

#5 Plan a well-balanced and nutritious diet. If you are already overweight, you may need to put on lesser weight than someone who has a normal pre-conception weight. Talk to your doctor about exactly how much you should gain. Excessive weight gain is associated with an abnormal increase in blood pressure, gestational diabetes, thyroid dysfunctions all of which needs to be avoided as far as possible.

#6 Walk and do what you love to keep fit. Yoga and exercise need to be discussed with your doctor. While pregnancy and childbirth are a natural process, every mother-to-be needs individual care. See what works for you and do exactly that. A little exercise goes a long way in making your mood better and keeping you fit. It will keep those happy hormones flowing.

Embrace your body’s transformation but try to keep fit as much as you can.

7 Read positive, inspiring stories and self-help books. Watch the positive news and overall keep your happiness quotient high. Your child feels every mood swing and hormone change. Pre-birth stress affecting the fetus is a reality, and you should keep that in mind before you decide to binge watch horrors. Avoid negativity at all costs.

#8 Don’t try to google your way through medical jargons.Unfortunately, there are no quality checks for whats available online. If you want to know the truth about something about your health be aware but talk to your doctor before making any changes to your routine. A good and experienced doctor talks with years of experience and knowledge behind her/his words.

#9 Listen to music because your unborn baby can hear pretty early on. They can even recognize angry voices. Talk to the little one, tell her/him about your dreams and aspirations. Sing to them, tell them a story. They will be listening.

#10 Have a group of family members who are a phone call away. In the mad rush of balancing life and a career, we forget the human connection. Believe me when I say that you will want all your cousins and friends around you to help at the weirdest of moments. A dear friend’s wife helped me out when my mom was unable to babysit. Her kindness left a mar. I realized that it really takes a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, we seem to be growing further and further away from our own tribe. So, keep your tribe close. Be there for them, and you will have angels reaching out. Remember- God always helps, you just need to ask for it.

#11 Talk to your health insurance provider/agent and get paperwork in order. Talk to the hospital’s insurance person. Insurance needs calm discussion, and in the excitement of giving birth, you can’t have financial loopholes.

#12 Keep some cash handy. With all the digitalization you never know when cash is needed.During stressful times we often forget password and pins.

#13 Keep a hospital bag ready with all essentials. I had my Kindle and charger stashed in it from the last 21 days. I also kept my lip balm and my favorite lipstick. It does help with the impromptu photoshoots when you can put on lipstick before you leave the hospital.

#14 Take your supplements. They are very important to keep you and the baby healthy.

#15 Know your blood group, your husband’s blood group. Also, keep a few friends ready and primed if you need help with blood transfusion at any time. It sounds weird but hear me out. I talk from experience.

I am Rh negative, and no immediate relative or friend had the same blood group. While hospitals I know have stocks, I slept more peacefully knowing a friend of a friend was a ready and fit donor.

Above all pray hard. Yes, prayers always help. You may be non-religious or an atheist. It doesn’t matter. You can always talk to the universe and send your gratitude out there. They will come raining down as blessings for your child.

Study your entire life.

The five and a half years of MBBS then 3 years of post-graduate studies then more studies for super specialization.Even if you stop after MBBS you will need to study constantly to keep updated.

Why ?because while anatomy and physiology basics remain same, diseases get more vicious and ways to combat them become newer and newer.So please be ready to read a lot, your entire life.

Battle self-doubt

While Life and death are in Gods’ hand you can never give up.But often you will have a tough choice between choosing the right thing, easy thing, difficult thing, what patient wants, and what the Government wants.Be sure that you can handle the pressure and do the right thing even if its the hardest.If you can handle life and death on the same day, you can cope with self-doubt.

Be ready to fight for your own health

Because while helping others you will not eat, sleep or breathe on time.You will forget to relax, you will not eat healthy simply because nothing is available which is healthy when you are on your duties.Your mental health will be even more of a challenge.You will carry the hopes, pains, expectations of hundreds of people every day.You will help some but not all.Always remember you have to do what you have to do.What happens is destiny.

You will prevent disease when you can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

But the problem is you will have to explain this to people who will not listen, or it will be too late when they do .But you will still try. So you must have a persistent bone in your body.If not you will soon give up.
