In the Part 1 of the Dove story I told you about how they came scoping put my balcony garden. Now the Dove family spent several days on my balcony. The babies were left to fend for themselves for most of the day, and the mom went flying. I was shocked. The baby birds hardly had their eyes open, then, but the mom was already letting them start independent.
The bird kingdom works in different ways.
Fuzzy feathery baby dove in the nest
They neither overthink nor procrastinate. They just do.
My daughter told me it’s going to take several weeks for the birds to fly.
I was worried. What if the pair fell from their nest or a sparrow decided to peck them? Luckily all my fears were unfounded. The birds grew from fuzzy feather balls to cute little baby birds with sharp claws and beaks. Small but sharp!

The visiting sparrows seemed like the aunts and uncles keeping an eye on the pair while their parents flew around. My daughter kept a watch on them too, and we were left wondering that their parents were so confident. An exciting point I noted was that when my daughter checked on them, it was okay. But when I peeped from the window, the mother bird would suddenly appear and look at me with an unblinking stare. Gave me quite a surprise that stares.
Now one morning, I saw the birds craning their necks up, looking here and there. It was like they were getting the feel of the place.
The next day they sat up even straighter and flapped their wings.
I was scared they would have a fall like Humpty dumpty. I wished the mommy bird would appear soon.
But she didn’t know, when they were flapping wings that morning.
Neither did she appear when my daughter found the pair hopping about. I was at the end of my mettle, worrying. What if they fell from the balcony trying to fly? I wished the mommy bird had a WhatsApp number. Then suddenly, the mommy bird arrived, and the three of them went hopping and fluttering all over the balcony.
It was a lovely sight. One I will forever cherish.
The baby dove sleeping in the nest
My daughter commented.
“Birds grow up awfully fast, it seems. Not like us, correct?”
Biology lessons and social science learned all without too much discussion.
We left the birds that night sitting together, and the following day the nest was empty.I felt heartbroken, and as I sat staring, the parent pair turned up again as if to say “hello”. I still am keeping a lookout for the pair of babies.
A lovely visitor who gave me back my ability to think clearly and keep living one day at a time. You never know when it’s time to fly.
