Email me at dramrita@healtwhealthbridge.com, if you have a topic suggestion you want to know more about. I wrote about WHO s guidelines for artificial sweeteners. While the cancer-causing effect of aspartame is possible. The cause-effect is not direct and is dose-dependent. Those who talk about taking a balanced view are right. But online research is biased just like every other large research. Aspartame has been identified as possibly posing a cancer risk (for quite some time)and IARC is going to declare it to be so.
Briefly :
Choose wisely . There is no Yes or No answer. Since it’s not a nutrient you can safely avoid it. Check food labels for the artificial sweetener used or the amount of sugar used.
Some things to know
IARC cancer risk categories: 1 – causes cancer; 2A – probably causes cancer; 2B – possibly causes cancer and 3 – no evidence available on cancer risk.
Diet cola is a billion-dollar industry. Regular Coke uses high fructose corn syrup and Diet Coke uses Aspartame. Diet Coke is also the number 1 soft drink amongst women in the USA. When you think about it, why have such a health-hazard drink for public consumption? Why don’t businesses create things which are good for people?
Apparently, people who are trying to lose weight end up drinking more Diet Coke and then gaining weight! But the science of Aspartame is related to weight gain and obesity! The global aspartame market was valued at $375.5 million in 2021 and is projected to reach $561.7 million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 3.9% from 2022 to 2031 (source). A 2017 study found that in a sample of nearly 17,000 Americans, about 25% of children and roughly 41% of adults self-reported eating or drinking a food or beverage containing NNS, including but not limited to aspartame.
Because while the cancer risk is possible. The addiction risk is possible and is the topic no one ever told you about.
This addictive substance is supposed to help you lose weight(but is associated with weight gain) plus possibly cause cancer. There’s a reason now tobacco use has warnings. It’s not easy to talk against these companies who say it’s a people’s choice. Just like the opioid over-prescription issue, this will blow up one day.
Once people are hooked the brain seeks the substance, and no one cares whether it causes disease or death. That is the reason we need to take the hard road to weight loss and not think a pill will do it for us. If the policymakers are serious about public health shouldn’t common sense be a part of the package ? We are worried about Aspartame in Diet Coke but what about the HFS in regular Coke? That’s proven to cause high blood sugar and an entire range of complications. As a physician, I am hoping people will choose wisely and not get caught up in panic mode and start guzzling regular Coke. Soft drinks, high sugar, and processed food with sweeteners are not your friend. They are all the proverbial wolves in sheep’s clothing.
