A to Z challenge Reflection post, is supposed to be about looking back with quiet pride right?But me, I am ecstatic.I am still alive after an entire month of mayhem when nothing seemed to get ironed and buttons didn’t get sewn.I was writing you see.Also reading, sharing and researching like a woman possessed.I take this opportunity ,for saying a heartfelt thank you ,to the 6200 readers who visited my blog during this month.

What did I do in April?I jumped ship. When I did my theme reveal ,I wanted to write about my journey as a mom blogger.But somehow as the launch day drew near, my brain started whispering, sometimes screeching

Since it’s a challenge people, will at least speed read?After thinking for entire March, I changed directions a few days before April 1st.But I never ignore gut feeling.!

Fruits are an important part of healthy diet.But few people know how much to have and the good things about these miracles which are nature’s multivitamins.Enter the perfect opportunity.I not only wanted to write about fruit good Ness but also about any fun quirks they have.Like watermelon and nature’s viagra .Who knew?

The enormous amount of research was exhausting.But my speed reading brain is forever ready to snack on interesting reads.Health and nutrition are great topics for an e-book.At least according to stats its is, and according to my hopes, it better be!

I woke up talking about lycopene in watermelon and tomatoes, cranberries for UTI, Indian Gooseberry and Vitamin C.I ran a contest based on my fruit posts.Thanks to all my readers who participated.

To make anyone listen is difficult. To make anyone hear and do what you want is, what the book How to Win friends and influence people is all about.

Unfortunately, I found it rather late.But luckily God has always given me the guidance to find the right way to fight my battles. No two person is similar so what works for one may nit work for the other.

But certain basic stuff like trust , sincerity, and kindness helps when you use them to dress up realities.

When I was a teenager, I used to read Readers digest, a lot.Relationship articles were always insightful.One such article had once said. If you ask your husband what he is thinking, he will answer, 

Nothing.

9 Times out of 10 this the truth and the 10th time it’s probably the last match he watched!This doesn’t mean men are not into deep thinking  ,they just rarely ponder and over think like we do.

I know my husband for 17 years (we are best friends since Medical college )and going to enter our 9th year of being married.

  1. Pick your battles.Don’t try to win all arguments. I am bad with this but trying to work on it.I suffer from the delusion of

I am always right!

 Deep introspection over the last year, has made me realize even if I am right ,(which is relative, in the bigger scheme )my methods of doing the right thing is no way a winner.

So now when I start a discussion, I tell that to him upfront.

See I have been 99 %right about reading situations, but 50%wrong  about the right way to deal with it.You on the other hand font need to read self-help books to find working solutions.So help me out here. 

 Surprise!Though he looks a little skeptical at the 99%thing, he is more amused and relaxed than defensive now.Must have this relaxed body language, when you are discussing important topics.Stress shows and the other person reacts to it, badly.

  • 2. If possible jot down on small pieces of paper, the points to discuss, like you would in a meeting.Keep all emotions, except kindness and love, off the conversation. That means no emotional outbursts.Difficult but must do.

Shouldn’t burn down your home to solve problems.Also, hysterical female, damsel in distress, should only be your last resort!

  • 3 .Look at his eyes.If he starts avoiding eye contact, it’s time for a cup of coffee and take a step back.Refusing to meet your eyes is a sure shot indication he has no intention of agreeing to your ideas.

 

  • 4.Don’t do it in front of kids.Kids need to be kids and you never know what they repeat.Also, the following tactics may be needed:

a.You might need to sit on his lap to win the battle.

b.You might need to kiss him, to show it’s you the woman he loves and not an adversary.

c.At the worse, you may turn into a screeching banshee.

In front of kids, it’s, unfortunately, the 3rd one which makes things worse.

 

  • 5.Never give negative ultimatums.They hardly ever work to get you the results.More likely it will make the problem worse.

I  am more likely to say

You will need to take me for weekend breaks every month ,if this doesn’t work out!

This doesn’t make him feel bad and makes me feel even better, even when I don’t get my own way.Either way , guess who has a good time?

  • 6.Ugly truths presented horribly have useless results.There’s no way you can win here.Try to be neutral and analytical,rather than irritating.But I must tell you, being a wife and being irritating, goes hand in hand during these times.

 

  • 7.Wear lipstick and look pretty.Arguments are easier to win, when you look pretty.Believe me, it’s nothing do with vanity and everything to do with armor.Never go into tricky situations, looking less than your best.

 

  • 8.Don’t go to bed with a fight in your heart.When you go to sleep it should always be with love in your heart and not bitterness.

You may feel , it’s always you, who does the reaching out, to give a hug. Remember all relationships are equal but not necessarily in everything. Sometimes it’s 40 /sometimes it’s 70 / 30.

  • 9.Try to make your hubby your friend.It’s easier to argue with a friend than a husband.Make it a game.You lose some and you win some.That’s life too.Sometimes you need to be a little roundabout.But you have to find  a way, that  works My opening lines for arguments are always

All disagreement I may  have is as a friend.All agreements as a wife !

 

  • 10.When in doubt, look sad and try the ‘damsel in distress ”thing.Okay, it may or may not work.But you never know until you try.Also be careful that you are honest with yourself.Why you do, what you do is not something anyone can help you with.

Monday Mommy Moments week 18:Hubby are you listening?

Last month of April was amazing.I blogged daily for 26 days for the #AtoZchallenge.My topic was Nutrition : Fruit facts you must know.

But what was amazing was even with daily blogging Deepa and I wrote for #MondayMommyMoments.It’s wonderful. when you write with people, who are thinking like you.We really didn’t think moms would have the energy to write on prompts with daily blogging.!But moms are blessed.We do what needs to get done right?

So we wrote each day, read the posts linked up, and shared blessings.

One thing I realized about #MondayMommyMoments mommies.We are tough  & creative.

When the going gets tough, we write even more!

How awesome is that?Deepa had exams(her daughters did that is), Dipika was traveling,   Tina had two blogs and Bluey and each mommy had her own struggle going on.But we wrote.

That’s the power of habits .if you write daily, it’s a habit.You never know what battles you may win because of that.

Monday Mommy Moments week 17 :Are you kind mommy?

Kindness cannot be taught ,it has to be felt. Children are like sponges.They respond to loving and cuddles in the same way you would.Plus they learn from you to be whatever way works.

If perseverance is a quality I want her to develop for her success in life.The kindness I want her to learn to enjoy that success with people who love her.

Kindness begets kindness.While it’s not possible to be kind to everyone at heart , our words should never be unkind.Harsh words can scar deeper than swords.Once when Rai was upset about a sketch pen set I couldn’t find she looked mutinous and said,

No you have to find it.You are a bad mommy!

I knew it was a momentary thing for the little one, it still it broke my heart.I thought back to the times I have told her she is being a naughty girl.Since patience is a virtue which has long since been a personal struggle I decided to have a talk with my hubby.My hubby is one of the kindest most patient people I know.He can speak kindly even when angry.So here I was waiting for some wisdom to be revealed.

He said something very simple.

Whenever you want to say something harsh to someone, just take a deep breath, and in that moment think.Would you want to hear the same if the tables were turned?

Interesting !In moments of self-congratulatory righteousness, we often forget how the other person feels.That’s empathy when we feel others pain by Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.

Mommy learnings about kindness

  • While scolding Rai  I try to show firmness and kindness.I criticize the action.Not the little person our future adult.

 

  • I have a monthly ritual.I make her choose the games and toys she wants to gift to another child who has less.This way she will learn (hopefully) that, what she has is a  blessing.Many children live with less.Teaching them thankfulness is a good way to raise happy, well-adjusted children.

 

  • Rai has been watering plants and helping me in the garden since she learned to walk.So she knows about taking care of living things.She has never torn a flower or a leaf without my permission.Occasionally she does want to pluck flowers, which I allow if they are at least one day old.Tearing leaves, not watering the plants is being unkind to them.This I think was easy to instill in her, as she saw me always taking care of plants.

 

  • We have an aquarium.Initially, she used to tap at the wall of the aquarium forcefully and the little goldfish hid from her.But once I reminded her about her fear of the doorbell ringing loudly and loud firecrackers, she understood.Now she gently taps on the walls.A few plants and pets help children appreciate life and teach them about kindness, by doing.Vague gyaan rarely works on children.They need to see and feel the effect of kindness.I am a plant and fish mommy too.Rai knows she has plant and fish sisters & brothers !

 

  • Always being kind to people who help us.The grocer, maid, gateman, driver, neighborhood shop uncle everyone needs to be thanked.I ask her to use the three magic words, please, thank you and sorry and mean it!Make them understand, the important service these people give and what would happen if they disappeared.Imagine the workload, when your maid does a disappearing act!You will see an instant lowering of voice.

  • I avoid arguing about volatile topics, in front of Rai.Occasional disagreements are okay.But if I am afraid of turning into a screeching banshee, I keep it for after she sleeps.Okay, not the best solution.But the only thing I can manage now! The most difficult part of being kind is when you are angry.

Are you kind when you are angry?As a parent, my challenge is to walk the talk.So difficult.It’s a tough battle when I need to work on me before I can tell Rai to be good.But that’s the best, as well as the challenging part of motherhood.It’s a learning journey where self-improvement is one of the definite results.No mom wants their child to grow up unkind and vitriolic.So mommy needs to watch that tongue.

Lychee Dangers & mysterious deaths #AtoZ

Lychee is a tropical fruit, with about 7 Lychee giving your daily dose of Vitamin C. It’s a sweet fleshy fruit, which if had in large amounts can cause stomach cramps and loose motion.

But today I will tell you about a mysterious disease surrounding Lychee.

Lychee contains many phytochemicals. The seeds contain methylene cyclopropyl glycine (MCPG).A chemical with a suspicious role in lowering blood glucose to dangerous levels.

MCPG Hypoglycemia 

Hypoglycemia is a condition of decreasing blood glucose, which may have acute and long-term effects. For the growing brain, it’s really bad because glucose is the only brain food. The brain survives on glucose as its main energy molecule.No sugar, the brain can stop!

Acute effect of low blood sugar includes convulsions and even death. Chronic hypoglycemia can lead to a long-term poor neurodevelopmental outcomes in children.

The True story ..stranger than fiction

Children came from lychee-growing areas, with convulsions in the early hours of the morning. Then before they could be stabilized, they tragically died. Nothing seemed to work. Till the blood workup of a few older children who could fight it longer, came back.

These outbreaks of encephalopathy occurring in Indian and Vietnamese children were traced back to Lychee.

Several investigation teams found the condition related to hypoglycin A and MCPG toxicity. Malnourished children eating lychees (especially unripe ones) on an empty stomach and remaining empty stomachs even after that may have life-threatening hypoglycemia. Lychee may also contain unusual amino acids. which influence gluconeogenesis and β-oxidation of fatty acids, exacerbating the acute illness.

What happened: Details

  • An unusual, rapidly deteriorating outbreak of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) with high case fatality was reported from Kaliachak- I, II, and III Blocks of Malda District of West Bengal in the month of June 2014 affecting 72 children with 34 deaths.
  • Children belonged to age groups from   9 months to 10 years, belonging to the low socioeconomic background of the lychee growing belt of Malda.
  • Male :(65% approx).

The case Fatality Rate was 47.2%.

The main presenting features:

  • Sudden onset of convulsions (100%) in the early hours of the morning
  • Rapid progression to unconsciousness (100%) 
  • Decerebrate rigidity (47%).
  • Fever was present in around one-third of cases.
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and leukocytosis(increase in white blood cells ) were two predominant  laboratory features

Lychee:Dangers include life threatening hypoglycemia & convulsions in malnourished children with possible genetic susceptibility
Clinical samples subjected to molecular and serological testing were all found negative for known viruses causing acute encephalitis.

What treatment did they receive?

  • All cases were treated with 10% dextrose infusion in addition to standard treatment protocol with anticonvulsants, anti-edema measures like 20% mannitol, antipyretic (acetaminophen) along with other necessary measures. Serial blood glucose monitoring was done.
  • At first contact, health care workers and ward sisters were advised, to start dextrose(a type of sugar ) as soon as they saw the cases as the time from reporting to the fatal outcome was horrifyingly low.
  • Dextrose helped correct the hypoglycemia and helped reduce the fatality in the later reported cases.

Conclusion

Genetically susceptible, malnourished child ,who had litchi in large quantity followed by prolonged period of fasting can lead to metabolic encephalopathy  .

The CDC report recommended that parents check , lychee consumption in children .Definitely have an evening meal, elevating blood glucose levels .Both these may help in avoiding this horror.

2 strange unexplained events:

  • The cases were more during the scorching days. Declined after rain showers.
  • Though no identifiable virus was not found and exact etiology couldn’t be identified, that hypoglycemia had a role to play is undisputed.

Research continues to find out the exact reasons. Till then it’s better to be safe.Increasing education and awareness about the condition in litchi growing belts have prevented recurrence of cases .
