A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future Review

A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers will rule the world is a book you must read now while we fight COVID19. Is this a review? Yes .Is it a summary?Could be .

Litsen to the podcast:

When I write about the need for education, I am serious about education being sustainable and worth its value. What you learn, should help you pay your bills.

But I made a mistake too. While growing up, studying hard and enjoying everything I did, I stopped drawing and painting. My creativity took a back seat and was forgotten (almost)after class 6. My mom still ensured we continued our Rabindrasangeet lessons, till grade 9.Then financial pressure ensured we focused on learning stuff with good ROI(return on investment).

Physics, chemistry, maths, history, geography, Bengali, English, and biology I read, researched books from other boards. I also took the mock tests did everything the newspaper special exam editions mentioned. But I forgot about drawing, dancing, singing and my love for DIY except for the school stuff. The creative play had no space in my schedule. But Maa Saraswati took care and I still read a lot of fiction, mostly mysteries, and romance.

Fast forward to Doctor’s life, I almost forgot to read a book. In Delhi, while working as a post-grad student, lack of time and lack of books made both a problem. But my friend Richa lent me books and also told me about local options for pre-loved books.

Coming back to Kolkata meant I was reading more books because Eloor lending library was there. Then I shifted to Malda, discovered Kindle app, Kindle unlimited and blogs. Life changed forever when I started my own blog.

Most of the writers and creative people out there must have wanted to be a writer sometimes in their life.

Me Nah! It was a shock for me too.

I dreamt of being a doctor, and I became one. I love being a doctor. I love helping people live healthier.

But I fell in love with writing.

Which do I love more? Both help me breathe and live.

I rediscovered my self when I started writing. My sleeping right brain woke up. I am happy to share educational content digitally. My journey in spreading online health education ,is exciting and fascinating journey.

Then I read this book.

A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers will Rule the world

I realized what happened when I started to write and how gardening helped me. While both our brains are supposed to be working, few use the mind to its full power. We keep this vital part of ourselves locked up and use it in a need to learn basis.

The more you learn new subjects, deeper brain connections happen at multiple levels. This helps you fight age-related deterioration of your brain power or cognition.

The right brain is supposed to help in creative ideation, lateral thinking, design thinking, and writing.

It’s unlikely that at any given time, only one part of your brain is working. But are you using it for good and to it’s full capacity?

A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers will Rule the world

The future belongs to a different kind of person with a different kind of mind: artists, inventors, storytellers-creative and holistic “right-brain” thinkers whose abilities mark the fault line between who gets ahead and who doesn’t.

What works for me:

Its science and storytelling in the right dose. It’s also something I am researching . With my own journey, and seeing how my daughter enjoys learning all STEM subjects, coding, DIY , crocheting, drawing , dancing, singing all the while having fun. I am determined to continue making learning fun,evidence-based and sustainable. I don’t like wool-gathering, when it comes to learning and education. But I know, how difficult it is to learn ,when it’s explained in a less than fun way.

As my daughter says :

Mum, I am not having fun with this sum!

That’s why she helped make a Counting fun book for preschoolers. She makes gifts draws birthday cards for friends and family and insists on writing stories, poems when mommy is tapping away on the laptop. Am I a good influence?

The book my daughter helped illustrate

I definitely hope so? Should you do it all? No, choose according to aptitude and what your child enjoys most. So should you skip all subjects she/he hates? Not a good idea. Maybe you could find a creative way to learn that particular topic. If you are bored, they will get bored too! It’s a challenge for parents and teachers. Can you make the right brain to participate in learning? Can you make learning fun?
