HOW TO BECOME A DOCTOR IN INDIA

How to become a Doctor in India? Why would you want to be?

I wanted to write this for a long time.I started in April because that’s when we start with the #AtoZ daily challenges.I may or may not write 26 posts.I may or may not be alphabetical. What I will be is consistent.

I will be persistent and I will tell you the truth.

At least about the truth I know. While many readers on y blog have a primary profession.I invite all of you to read my posts, share them with young people at the threshold of choosing careers.I also ask you to think about sitting for the Pre-medical entrance exams after one year of studies and getting a first-hand experience. You have nothing to lose. Also, you will gain insight into why Doctors sometimes seem unapproachable and arrogant.

If you clear the premeds maybe you could take up being a doctor as a second profession?I strongly suggest every family should at least have one MBBS graduate to help in living the healthiest life and also to be able to judge the reality of healthcare in India today. While I will tell the truth, I will always try to be optimistic, because as a Doctor that’s my primary duty.

To give Hope!

All throughout this month, I will tell you about the human qualities, the subjects, the colleges and the exact situation of medical education in India

What is the first step of becoming a Doctor in India?

The Human part: Attitude

An attitude of learning goes a long way of succeeding in life.In whatever you do you can always learn more. As a Doctor, you will be a lifelong student.Your biggest teacher will, in fact, be your patient. But you have to accept that you will not have any control over life or death.Doctor’s are not Gods. They can’t be Gods and you should not play God.The simple truth is life and death are predestined.Your work in this world is to try to make a difference.

You will neither control the result of treatment nor the course of the disease. What you will do is to try to decrease pain, help cure with now available knowledge and experience. But what works for one, often doesn’t work for others.

Then if you don’t know anything and if things may or may not work.Whats the use?

The point is you have to try. You should always give a balanced hope.Tell the truth kindly.Maybe very difficult at times. But be kind.As a doctor, you will need to fill your cup with optimism and empty it of sadness.Harness your Patronus and be ready to accept that even Harry Potter had his detractors. An attitude of Gratitude and acceptance of the eternal truth is needed.
But can you do it?
How to Become a doctor in India (Step 1&2)
The subject: Anatomy
This is a subject you start in the first year of your medical undergraduate studies.Anatomy teaches you all about the human body, how it is formed and where everything is.Every muscle, nerve, and vessels are shown in the Anatomy dissection halls.A dissection hall is a sacred place. This is where the good people who have kindly donated their bodies for medical education, help us learn about the human body.In the first year, you learn to dissect and find all the structures and identify them. Most of the time you may be asked to not wear gloves for a better understanding of the feel of nerves and vessels!Definitely not easy if you are squeamish!
This is where you will find out if surgery is what you want to do finally as a Doctor.
The Question: What about Alternative medicine?
I believe everything has its own place in this world. If you believe strongly in Alternative medicine study that. But do not be under the misconceptions that bridge courses or crash courses will be sufficient to help you practice modern medicine.Choose carefully and practice sincerely. Also look for emergency care and hospital practices with Alternative medicine.Look for future plans with it before you take the plunge.

What is the second step of becoming a Doctor in India?

The Human part: Belief
If you want to do anything in life you must believe it first.Believe that you can do it.Believe that you are meant to do it.Believe that all will be well.Believe that you were meant to heal.Believe there is a bigger plan and all is happening right around that.Your behavior needs to be carefully moderated too.Behavior towards yourself, your family, friends and all those who come to be healed. While a cure is often a mirage, some amount of healing is always possible.

The Subject: Biochemistry

This is a subject you will learn in the first year.It will appear very cut and dry.But is exceedingly important. This subject will teach you all about how your body digests metabolize and utilize food.It is a study of the chemical and physio-chemical processes and substances inside the human body. It teaches the chemistry of carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, nucleic acids, and vitamins. There are practical classes and strong emphasis is laid on correlations of clinical cases and diagnostic parameters.

The Question: Is Biochemistry taught separately as a graduation subject in the general streams?

Yes, it is.This is a good branch of science to gain knowledge in as the postgraduation courses are interesting too and have a lot of scopes if training taken in a good college. The scope of employment is good too.I will be updating the colleges and employment opportunities in these fields after full research is completed.

  1. I totally agree that a doctor doesn’t have any control over life and death. But they are next to God, they are true messengers of God in the life of many patients.

  2. Absolutely spot on. You need the right attitude and gratitude followed by love of biochemistry and understanding of human anatomy.

  3. I appreciate the way u have put up such a complex thought in simple words. Well, I think all of the points mentioned above along conviction to know more will always help.

  4. I have an even weirder reason I did not get into this line. I was so bad at drawings that my mom used to draw me the human body. After that it stuck with all the subjects that didn’t have any drawing until I joined engg

    PhenoMenon

  5. I agree it’s important to have doctors in the family. Great post and I will forward to my niece who aspires to be a medical practitioner.

  6. There is a lot of romance around ‘Mera beta doctor hai’ but not many know the effort, stuggle and the long years, not to forget the economics of it. This will be interesting.

  7. I was so scared entering this page. Because i guess my views on this topic are known to the entire world 🙂

But you’ve given a good balanced argument on this topic. I will be back to read the rest.

  8. Keeping the faith is so important. Salute all the doctors. So hard right from
    The time they decide.
