Hegarty on Creativity: There Are No Rules

Do you know what people like? Do you know what’s going on with the creative world? Is that what worries you as a writer/blogger? Don’t worry. You’ve got this. You can’t measure everything in life. Creativity is one of them. Though we look at data and statistics to find what’s working with writing/blogging, the truth is writers write because they love it.

There’s something about talking to your head while you tap away on the phone or laptop.

I am an accidental writer, blogger, artist. The universe guided me to find a companion who would grow with me, and I could take it anywhere.

That’s the best part about creativity. It helps you go anywhere you want.

There is simply no right or wrong except that it should make you feel happy inside. Or maybe that’s just my rule. You may have some other way of measuring why you create. Hegarty in the book Hegarty on Creativity: There Are No Rules, gives some great insights into the process of how you can get on with creating, without rules upsetting your apple cart.

The questions you should ask yourself as a Creative

Is this idea inspiring?

Is my idea daring or challenging?

Does it touch a truth? is a little dicey as truth depends on who’s telling the story and their worldview. So having an audience persona in mind will help. You are not chocolate and can’t please everyone.

Will it capture people’s attention and make headlines? This can be both the good, bad and ugly stuff, so choose wisely. Fame and notoriety are step-siblings with little margin of difference.

Is it fresh? Oh, if only there were a gadget/app/tool to measure content freshness.

Do you feel better, emotionally or physically, after creating the content? If all else fails to help you, the last one is reason enough to do what you do. Remember, it’s easy to be a consumer and challenging to be a creator. Doing it from a happy place makes it easier and sustainable.

How do you know that something works?

You won’t know until you have set it loose in the world. Then you can sit and watch. Right now, you can only collect your dots and create your work.

Creating something you love and that you would buy is the best way forward. Creating needs to be sustainable but creating with money being the inspiration can fall flat and dull soon. It’s no contest to sustainable passion, which makes money.

The author’s tip to getting rich (if that’s your goal)

Try inventing something the world wants. Something which makes us feel better.

If you are creative and want feedback, what kind do you need?

Honest feedback. So hold onto that friend, partner, a sibling who talks straight. Someone who tells you things just the way they are.

Wisdom from the Book

  •  Have fun creating
  • Live your present. Make it interesting. That’s the only definite.
  • The future is predictable only if you invent it.
  • Money is a tool. You need to learn to use it well.
  • As a creator, you are privileged. Being thankful for it makes us even more blessed.
  • Your creative work is a legacy, a gift. What other people do with their gift is their choice. It’s an exciting and scary responsibility. But 100 years later, someone will look at your work and wonder why you did what you did. It’s not going to be a cakewalk, but it’s going to be fun!
  • Whether you write a story on the blog, paint, create music, or sculpt, you tell your story your way. Dont let any rules stop you from trying stuff. If you are honest with yourself, it’s always going to be okay.

Stop reading this and start creating your masterpiece. But don’t forget to grab this book too!

  1. being creative is a gift that not many people have in them… but it should be improved upon as much as possible…

  2. You have pointed out that there are no rules for creativity, Amrita. I agree. I think I write well as my blog is ranked ok but what about the rest? I dunno how to make money out of it 🙁

    1. Try using Ahref’s free Keyword tool to get a list of terms your audience are searching for. You can also go through my Book Starting a Successful Blog . It’s available on Amazon.
