Thankful Thursday week 3 :Being a doctor changed my life

Thankful Thursday :Week 3 Prompt
Thankful Thursday :Week 3 Prompt

What’s the life event that changed my life?

Which  is the event I am thankful for most?
If you start at the beginning
Which is a very good place to start ……

It all began when I cleared the West Bengal Medical entrance examination .
Life changed.It was exciting.

A whole new world of anatomy dissections, biochemistry vivas ,community medicine classes ,clinical rotations and night duties.

Night duties the bane of my existence . But still being a doctor is the only thing I ever wanted to be.

Luckily for me in West Bengal ,I needed a paltry sum of Rs 250 per year,  as yearly tuition fees. So studying to become a doctor was not a money game.
The most money I spent ,was for books .I bought some  and photocopied  parts of those ,which I couldn’t (Yes I know that’s not ethical, but had to study and couldn’t afford them????)
My parents didn’t have to bear the burden of spending lakhs, on my education.Frankly ,they didn’t have that kind of money .
In fact as a medical student ,it was easier for me to tutor  and earn my own pocket money.
Once  I became an intern and had the formal Dr.   in  front of my name ,I started getting paid for my services.
Life changed forever.

In fact I am thankful for studying  in West Bengal .Here , till a short time  ago ,Private Medical colleges and exorbitant college fees were unheard of.The tax payers helped subsidise my studies.
This thankfulness to the citizens, made me want to stay back in India ,after completing my studies.Life  would be different in a different country .But the burden of trust which I have needs fulfilling.

3 Life lessons I have learnt in this journey

LESSON 1

I have learned never to underestimate the capacity of the human mind and body to regenerate — even when prospects seem most wretched. The life force may be the least understood force on earth.”

Norman Cousins (in his; Anatomy of an Illness)

LESSON 2
The greatest force in the human body is the natural drive of the body to heal itself – but that force in not independent of the belief system. Everything begins with belief. What we believe is the most powerful option of all.
             Norman Cousins

LESSON 3

Nature  itself is the best physician
Hippocrates
If the Government didn’t subsidise the cost of medical education,it would be unaffordable for many

It’s during my studies at Calcutta Medical college , I met my very best friend who became my life partner .
So life took a giant leap when I entered Medical College. Both professionally and personally.

  1. You are in a very noble profession and I respect Doctors a lot for they are our spiritual Gods who save lives. Beautiful reflection as always. It’s not easy being one who work selflessly to improve lives Dr Amrita.

    1. Hi Visual thanks for such kind words. Selfless is difficult to be .I am sure none of us can really claim to be selfless .But caring about others is the best way to ensure ,someone will also be caring about you.

  2. You’ve changed my opinions on Doctors. I used to find them to be very serious and boring people. But after knowing you I’ve realised that there is an other side to most doctors too. You’re fun, tech-savvy and always read to help, even go out of your way to do so! And your eagerness to learn and absorb is inspirational.
    🙂

    1. Thank you so much for such a warm description of me.☺????.I think wanting to help is why doctors want to be doctors in the first place.Somewhere in the journey we forget. Sometimes. Then life teaches you to remember.

  3. Good to know your story Amrita and good to know that you wanted to stay back in India to serve our country. Gratitude is very important as it makes us realise all the good things in our life. Glad you chose to write about this phase of your life and equally glad to be a friend of a wonderful person as u. 🙂

  4. They say – Medicine is a very noble profession and I think I am surrounded with the noblest. My family has doctors and we are always meeting them in hospitals. Hmm, really they never get to be home on time and we reach hospitals when we are home.

  5. Amrita, you are very inspiring.Whenever I read your blogs, I get to learn so many good things from you.

  6. Your story is so inspiring, I’m sure it took a lot of will power to keep pushing to meet your dreams!
So glad that I know you,& now I know a part of your story as well ????
