#Monday Mommy Moments 2017 week 2

#MondayMommyMoments was a sudden decision. But it was one of my 2016 blessings.

The prompt this week is heartbreaking.

I didn’t really want to write this.I studiously avoided all twitter discussions on this topic.
Focusing instead on praying for the girl.
That’s my way of coping with terrible events which defy understanding.

Which makes me feel powerless.
But then Deepa suggested we make this our #MondayMommyMoments voice for this week .

I knew what #MMM needed to do.

The viral video ,the social media outrage, the thoughtless comments all made me unbelievably upset.

I am a working mom.I am a doctor .Horror of horrors I have night duties.
The first winter I spent at the place of my posting I had to sit in the ward masters office for 2 hours at 2am at night ,for the hospital car to take me home .It was a chilly winter night .

I knew no one at the hospital and my hubby was alone at home with my 11 month old baby.

When the driver did turn up ,his body language didn’t inspire confidence.
Luckily I had company while being dropped off in the hospital car.But my relief was short-lived.
The driver said ,he  will drop off the male doctor first ,leaving me at a loss of words .In total panic I wished my male colleague would speak up. He being as much a stranger as the driver ,I still expected a common courtesy.
After all it was 2am .And I was a female .
I was in for a shock.
Not a word from the unchivalrous ,thoughtless person.
The 10 minutes to my home after he was dropped off, was the scariest I have ever felt.
I came back home.
Couldn’t sleep .Terror struck that I may have to go again.
End result .My hubby got a reliable driver who takes me to and fro when I have night duties.

I run.So that I can run away from need be.

I lift weights .So that my punches have strength and lone assailants don’t have it easy.
I pray .
I pray that men remember they are born from a woman’s womb.
I pray that men remember they will cease to exist, if we don’t become moms .
I pray that little boys who sleep in their mother’s lap, remember to respect women. All women.
I pray that mom’s teach their little girls to be strong.
Strong physically and emotionally.
To support and help other women.Be strong for their own self.

To fight back.
Men who think women are weak are fools.
Men who don’t respect women will pay the price.
Men who try to degrade a woman’s body and soul should be given exemplary punishment.
Nothing gives you the right to harm another human.

Women stay strong .If we want the change .We have to be the change.

If things don’t change ,let us make the change.Let us make this world safer for our sisters and daughters.

I don’t know how we can do it.But the first step is to not let people forget.

Not let them pretend it’s just another stray incident ,because the girl was foolish.

Not let them judge us .

Not let those person dare to do this again.

No one should dare harm another human .

Writing this was tough.

  1. I am still collecting words to write on this topic , my post will be up soon 🙂
Yes no matter how much independent we become a sense of fear always persist in corners of my mind
& my poems always influence from the pain of woman

  2. Loved the piece. Agree that instead of saying that the girl is weak she needs to be protected, we must instil the belief that she is a human being and should be respected. Nothing more, nothing less.

  3. As you said, it’s tough to write on this prompt. Many of us have faced some or the other problem like you mentioned. Till now, we, women are habituated to ignore teasing and sexual abuse and blame ourselves. But, atleast now after this incident, we as mothers have to focus on teaching our sons to respect women and also teach self defense skills to our daughters.

  4. We need to be strong to fight and be conscious too of the movements around when you are alone. Parents need to have uniform set of rules for both boys n girls, when girls can’t roam at late nights; boys too shouldn’t be allowed and healthy upbringing is must. May god bless all.

  5. Well written blog post ma’am, I am new to blogging world but would love to take part in your initiative #MondayMommyMoments. Thanks

  6. We all have our own stories to share from our childhood or from school or college time. But now as moms when we hear all this happening around us, we all get angry and its really saddening to see innocent girls going through this. We all should speak up and make our girls strong and teach our boys to respect girls.
