When it’s time to talk about health, there no such thing as too much prevention. On World Health Day, I attended a webinar by Apollo Healthcare where they talked about their Health of the Nation report. It includes data they have collated over two decades and the trends in Non-communicable diseases. In this article, I will be sharing a few insights from the webinar I attended online.
The report puts a spotlight on how there’s a steady rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the last twenty years. The COVID 19 pandemic has firmly shown that NCDs can exacerbate symptoms and cause complications. The data Apollo is sharing is crucial to driving home the point. Just with NCD alone deaths account for 64.9 % of deaths. But with preventive practices in place, it’s possible to prevent deaths due to NCD by 80%.
The High Risk Triad include
- Uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus
- Hypertension
- Dyslipidemia
A few factors which are tilting the risks even further are Age, Tobacco chewing habits, and smoking. In fact, tobacco chewing in elderly ladies puts them at as high a risk as smoking.
NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, chronic liver disease are preventable through early detection and treatment. The problem is reaching those who need it on time. Your Health is your greatest wealth and you simply can’t ignore taking care of it. While timely treatment is priceless, early detection needs screening of at-risk populations.
