Being Good

Being Good Dr.Amrita Basu

I grew up hearing I was a naughty girl. Then when I thought I was finally grown up I seemed to still  get into trouble even when I did all the right things. But the funny thing was-in my heart I was always trying to be good!

I studied ,got good marks, sometimes needed second chances and things were trudging along like the tram cars of Kolkata.I knew I would reach destination, just not quickly. But it was the right path or so I thought.

While learning to drive I had a nice driver uncle teaching me the ropes on Kolkata streets. It was 2010 and I was working at Sishumangal hospital and a newly minted Junior consultant at the ENT department. The driver uncle used to pick us (my husband and I)up at 6 am in the morning for the training session one after another. My trainer always told me to keep eyes  focused  on the street in front but stay alert for the peripherals …because on the roads it’s the rule breaker errant driver who can cause havoc. The lessons from  driving have a nice parallel with life too.

I was trying to be a good girl  but not always in company that would bring out the best in me.

Without sounding high and mighty ,I just want to say this;sometimes the fun people may not be good for you and those good for you may or may not be fun,but will always be a good influence .Choose your company with care. That’s crucial for life.

I made a very good friend at Medical school .Her way of studying ,sincerity and loyalty were always inspiring. She was also brave and never afraid to tell the truth .That was one of the reason we stayed friends.Being brave enough to tell the truth, kind enough to do so gently and caring enough to always help. She is the reason I became friends with my then classmate, now husband and my life changed

Good people are (almost) like trees .They share the oxygen and shade with everyone. They attract birds, bees, people. But they need protection too.Because there are always people who want to cut down trees too ,even good ones.

So with being good don’t forget to be brave, wise, kind and smart enough to find your tribe who vibe .

  1. And what if our goal in life is not to be good at all? Our goodness or badness is always related to other people. I was also always considered a naughty girl, but only when I stopped trying I managed to achieve the things that made me happy. Freedom!
