Poila Baisakh: Shuvo Nabobarsho is full of Health and Happiness for you

Shuvo Nabobarsho to all my friends who celebrates the Bengali new year. Poila Boisakh is celebrated by Bengalis all over the world on the 15th of April every year. This is 1429 according to the Bengali New year. Just like the English New Year Calendar starts with January, the Bengali Calendar starts with Baisakh. It welcomes spring and the nip in the air is replaced by sunny weather, happy blooms. It’s also time to spring clean before the festivities begin. I decluttered and cleaned some. Got new curtains from Fab India and got ready for a family get-together.

The last two years have made me deeply realize the value of having friends and family around. Isolation is difficult. Hope that the world heals and the situation around the world gets better. I hope you took your COVID 19 vaccine shots and taking precautions as needed.

It’s the Bengali New Year which brings with it plenty of smiles, good fortune, health, and happiness for all our dear ones.

Now I always like sharing happy days with people who are dear to me. There’s no one better than family and here we are all celebrating the new year.

We visited our village home.

Cooked lunch, alur dom, mutton kasha, jhinge posto,Sorshe Bata Ilish maach ,Laal tangrar jhal , different types of sweets, and more.

The copious amount of green tea, black tea, ginger tea, coffee, and adda(Bengali word for chit chat on a massive scale) made up for fun memories. The little one had a little upset with health and by God’s grace she is better now.

School reopening is a whole new adventure. My sister, brother-in-law, and mom’s visit gave Poila Baisakh the right zing. The day after is always sad.

But we started planning the summer vacation while baking a delicious Chocolate fudge cake with @itzginia at the foodlives.com .Catch all her recipes there.

The Poila Baisakh family bash was fun. Classically Bengali women wear saris and men wear traditional attires like Panjabi and Dhoti.Whatever you wear or eat the spirit of gratefulness and celebration is intact.

Sisters are always fun!

According to Drikpanchang, the Bengal king Shoshangko started the Bengali calendar in 594 CE. The first day of Baisakh is also celebrated as Rangoli Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, and Vaisakha in Bihar. The festival also marks the harvesting of the Rabi crops. So it’s also a day to pray to Indra Dev for a good harvest in the coming year too.

  1. so glad to see you had a wonderful new year celebration. We celebrated puthandu as well (like you mention).. loved all the pics..

  2. Amrita, how fascinating that the bengali community has a spring festival somewhat parallel to Easter and passover. spring festivals are a great time to clean up, replant the gardens, and generally re-set our thoughts for the upcoming months. I am currently watching “The Good Karma Hospital” on prime video, and one of the actresses is named “amrita”. So I think of you frequently. I hope you are well and happy. )(Btw, I don’t know why my entries are all showing up in caps and bold. It’s not something I am doing.)

    1. Hi Kebba.Yes Spring is a lovely time to celebrate. The caps thing is a problem I , but it looks ok on the admin side and on approval.I will check out the series on Prime and I love it that you think of je often.Hope you are doing well Kebba.
