Forest and man : How to plant a forest in your backyard

Did you know one man, gave up a lucrative job, to plant trees and create man-made sustainable forests?I  wish to have a nice whispering forest in my backyard one day.No wild animals.Only birds and butterflies for me.With forest cover decreasing the world is facing horrifying changes in weather.Floods and famines are everyday occurrences. The scene looks bleaker in India with its bursting population and increasing need for space.

But what if we could change our barren lands into green lungs? Those lands which are lying waste We have several such in our government land banks, which are neither fit for farming nor for an industry.

They can be put to good use by making sustainable forests.

I have not gone mad.Shubendu Sharma has made this his life’s mission and his business. This smart eco-entrepreneur (love the term), realized early on that good deeds need money. If you want to make a difference it should make economic sense.

That’s why he has concentrated on making his company profitable.Normally it takes 100 and 1000s  of years to make a forest self-sustainable.Akira Miyawaki’s step by step method hastens that growth to create a mature, self-sustaining native forest in ten years. The company gives support in various ways. They prepare the soil and make the plants ready for the plot.Local species, climate, and water needs are important while choosing the plants. For the first two to three years active watering and weeding are needed. After that, the forest becomes self-sustaining.

  1. What a wonderful thing he is doing, Dr. Amrita. Eco-entrepreneur perfectly describes what Shubendu is doing. Thanks for letting us know about him.

  2. We need more trees, as many trees as we can plant. I’ve been donating to those who plant trees, but I need to do more. Thanks for sharing about this wonderful human being!

  3. I have a forest in my back yard that only took time and no money. When tree seedlings came up in the “wrong” place, like rain gutters or right next to the house, I moved them to a better spot. Now, I’ve about run out of space on my half acre of maples, oak, sycamore, cherry laurel, pine, mimosa and many identified trees. I’d love to give some away. If there were a crazy tree lady like me in every neighborhood, no one would have to buy trees. But people pull up trees and just throw them out like trash. If you can find them, you won’t need to spend money.

  4. Hi Dr Amrita – love the idea of planting a tree and then another … I don’t have a garden here … but my family has always planted trees and had pleasure in letting the earth do its thing … thanks for letting us know about Shubendu … cheers Hilary

  5. Nothing can be more important today than looking at the way we have been treating our nature and how much damage we have already inflicted. Our life and our existence in this planet depends so much on the nature around us and the way we protect and preserve the surrounding we live. It is time for each of us to do our bit to make our surrounding a greener place to dwell and we need to keep doing it more often than we did earlier.

The Chinese proverb “we should have planted a tree 20 years back and we should be enjoying the fruits of that little contribution to the plantation” is so apt and it keep reminding us what we have missed and what we should be doing right away…just plant a tree.

As highlighted by you the very fact that it takes 100 to 1000 years to make the forest self sustaining and we don’t have that much time, and we want things to happen faster and there is urgency in doing it. If it can be done in 10 years that a wonderful thing that can make all the difference to our life and the life of our next generation.

Yes, now in many states like Telangana to Madhya Pradesh have take up as mission to plants millions of trees every year and they have been doing in the last few years and if most of the states start doing the same way and keep doing year on year, we will all see the sea change we all have been imagining and it is all possible, it needs awareness and it needs a movement to make the change that will change our life and make this world a better place to live.

Thanks so much for sharing this idea of eco-entrepreneur, that can make a huge difference in all our lives.
    😀

    1. Thank you so much Nihar for your well thought out comment.I feel we all need to think deeply about whats happening to this wonderful planet which has given us so much.Is this how we leave mother earth for our children?

  6. I found this absolutely fascinating. What an exciting project! For me this is a perfect example of how humans can work in harmony with nature for the betterment of all.
