Happy Grandparents Day:More than a parent & better than a Friend #LoveJatao

Mom and Rai
Mom and Rai

My daughter calls her grandma Diduni. She likes playing with her, singing with her and pottering behind her while she works.Whenever my mum visits or we visit her it’s wonderful to see how much they enjoy each others company. My daughter learned Hanuman Chalisa and Gayatri Mantra listening to my mum.She started reciting it at a very young age.

Watching her Diduni, Rai has learned how to make tea, omelette, rice, at least orally. She learned how to make me smile easily by giving me a hug.

Grandparents are special.Their presence teaches children the value of a family bond. When my daughter is with her Diduni, she enjoys having an older playmate who takes care like a mom, but as much fun as a friend. Today as we’re spending Grandparents day my daughter helped me make chocolate oats pancake for breakfast. That’s Diduni’s favorite. They watched Baby’s Day Out which both of them enjoyed. Lunch was my moms favorite Hilsa steamed with basmati rice.We have a plan to go out for dinner at my mom’s favorite Bengali restaurant 6 Ballygunge place. It’s famous for its mouth watering non-veg Bengali thali.Rai is enjoying making this day special for her Diduni but for her, every day is a grandparent day.

Happy Grandparents Day-More than a parent & better than a Friend

How   grandparents improve children’s well-being:

  • Help children understand about social fabric.
  • Children and grandparents help support each other emotionally when parents get busy with their day to day life. Even though nobody can take the place of parents, grandparents provide the much-needed support when both parents are working. When they see a healthy relationship between their parents and grandparents, they are more likely to be happy in their relationships.
  • Grandparents ‘may be first to spot autism in a child’ This has a lot to do with how close grandparents are and how much time they spent with the kids. But frequently they being caregivers spot changes in behavior quickly.
  • Childcare support from grandparents increases the chances that parents go for a second child.

When I  forget science and the research studies, I remember the patisaptha made by my grandma. She used to scold me for not taking afternoon naps. For running away to play with naughty kids and for my many mis- adventures with her lipsticks.I still remember the delicious breakfast of luchi and alur dom which was a staple at Didunbari.

When I know where my parents come from, I know where I am in the life pyramid and it’s easier to find my way.The grounding comes from the people in my life. That’s what I want Rai to have too. That feeling of belonging. That feeling of growing from the same center!

If parents are the branches of trees, grandparents are the roots which help us know our parents better. The stories they tell us, the secrets they share, all are important for growing up.Nuclear families are the norm of modern society but the magic of Grandma’s payesh cannot be forgotten.

  1. I love how beautifully you have written this post. I agree with the importance of belonging to that pyramid and knowing your roots. I am quite supportive of the idea of the joint family even today, with modifications to adopt the modern world. I wish everyone the joy of grandparents 🙂
    PS: The photograph is lovely.

  2. its cool when you have already experienced a feeling and then watch your kids getting the same thing many times over. Your story is really heart warming.

  3. My children are so blessed with their grandparents, although my husbands parents live far away when they see them they have such a fantastic bond. They see my parents a lot and are very close, it is so important for children to understand and respects elderly people. #mg

  4. so true Amrita. I have wonderful memories of my vacations spent with my grandparents. Indeed we learn a lot. Even my daughter is very attached with her grand parents.

  5. I don’t celebrate Grandparents day because I think it is a bit too commercial, but I do think my parents are amazing and they are fantastic grandparents. I don’t know what I would do without them. Pen x #mg

  6. Grandparents have a special place in our heart always. I call my grandma didun quite similar to diduni,I have personally learnt embroidery work from her. The caption is point on more than a parent and better than a friend. Lost my dadu and father’s side grandparent long back but definitely have many sweet memories with me till date.

  7. Beautiful post. We are lucky enough to live fairly close to both sets of grandparents and I love watching the children with them, they have such a special bond x

  8. So very true Amrita! They are indeed roots…We learn a lot from them indeed! And the pampering we get…that true essence of love in more than anything one wants in life. Lovely Pictures btw 🙂

  9. Lovely post, Amrita. I had a very beautiful relationship with my grandparents and my son has the same with his! Life comes a full circle for me when i see him share jokes and enjoy some amazing conversations that I often had with mine. I loved how your little one enjoys her time and learns so much from her Diduni. May they both have many more such wonderful moments together in the future too!

  10. I loved that your kid knows how to “make tea, omelette, rice, orally”. How sweet is that!!
It is a blessing to have your kids grow around their grandparents. The love, affection, patience and wisdom of grandparents is exceptional. Glad that your daughter is blessed with all these and much more. 🙂

  11. You summed it up so well, Amrita….if parents are the branches of our family tree, then grandparents are the roots, who hold the tree together and give it strength.
My grandparents passed away long ago, but I remember them very well to this day. The love they showered on me during the time they were with us can never be forgotten.

  12. Very true Amrita! My daughter loves to spend time with her grand parents. But, being in US we are not fortunate to spend time with them a lot. Their love is incredible. I agree with all the points you said. The physical and emotional support they give for the kids are pure. Lovely article.
