#Thankful Thursdays:Childhood memories (33)

ThankfulThursdays:Childhood Memories

Childhood memories are our happiness balance. Those that are kept inside the labyrinth of our memories. They nourish us, guide us, support us and make us happy each time we take them out of their silk wraps, to have a look.

What exactly is a memory?

It is a miracle of God, wonder of science,  work of our neurons where sight, sound, textures, tastes, all come together. It creates a vibrant audio-visual, which entirely plays in our brain and can transport us back in time.

I have beautiful memories of summer holidays, spent lazily reading all day and drinking cups of chai, taking only the very necessary breaks.

Sleeping curled up with a book is the best way to get transported into the parallel story world, the author talks about.I remember the times I went for midnight picnic with the Malory Tower girls.I remember the Land of Birthdays, which I visited with Jo, Fanny, and Beth (I think!), on top of the Faraway tree.I remember the summers spent solving mysteries with Fatty and the Five find outers, of rowing to George’s Island, with the Famous Five.

Sometimes these memories are food memories.

The first strawberry cheesecake my sister baked. The delicious fried sweet she made, which accidentally became garlic flavored.Strangely enough, even the garlicky sweet dish, found several fans! But I can never forget the look on my aunt’s face, when she was offered another after she volubly praised the dish. This was before any of us had tasted it.In all fairness, my darling sis was totally unaware that the cook had used her favorite container for making a garlic paste! Now we all know better than to keep our bakeware in front of our cooks and maids!Lesson learned with a food memory.

During our exams, my sister always woke up early in the morning. We took turns to make tea to  get started studying.Guess what? After having my first cup of tea I used to fall asleep.Again .This time with the book covering my face.

When I was caught, I always insisted I was using the ether to transfer, what’s on the pages into my head. For that book to face contact, is important.Always in supine position, with eyes closes. A very high level of mindful meditation. Till date, I have researched it diligently and I can never forget the taste of the tea and the look of surprise on my sisters face when I told her theses theories.

Writing this for #ThankfulThursdays.

  5. Memories are definitely powerful in evoking emotions in us. My best childhood memories are playing with my cousins or watching a movie with my mom, so I go on movie dates my daughter now that I’m a mother to share and create those memories for my daughter as well.

  6. Lovely heart warming memories Amrita! Im so happy to hear that you had a beatiful childhood and created such happy memories that can still make you smile!

  7. Nice memories Amrita. Your early morning study and sleep memories made me laugh. It reminded me of one of my friend who used to scold us for not waking her up for studying, and the story was she would shout at us when we used to wake her up.

  9. The last bit reminded me how I hated waking up early 1 week before exams, and how i cursed myself for having to stay awake late i the night and lose up on sleep and sanity 1 day before the exams!!

  10. Ether Transfer 😀 Book to Face hahah… Loved reading your memories, I am trying to image the Garlic CheeseCake’s taste…
Childhood is the best time of life. Love it Amrita 🙂

  11. I am imagining the taste of that garlicky sweet and the expression on your Aunt’s face!:)))))
Very impressed by the book to face contact theory, I must try it sometime!
Loved reading this walk down childhood lane, Amrita.

  12. Your story about the garlic cheesecake is so funny. I’m sure your sister was disappointed by how it turned out, but it definitely made the whole experience more memorable. If it had turned out fine, you probably wouldn’t even remember it now.

  13. Childhood… a sweet treasure chest of fond memories! The falvours and shades of them may differ… but the essencebis “innocence”! The eastman colur that the gone by era adds to it makesbit all the more valuable!

  14. Sadly I feel most of my childhood memories slipping away. Even the good ones. That’s okay, cause I’m making more. I think I’ll copy your ‘thankful thursdays’, so much to be grateful for!

  15. I have some enjoyable childhood memories with my family. I remember going on a variety of trips! I hope my kids have good memories as well.

  16. This reminds me of my throwbacks when my sister comes around we took our kids swimming and laughed about how we would stay outside for ten hours and swim, and the kids were trying that but with age u know u need limited sun lmao.

  17. Awe! That’s really sweet what you remember! I don’t have a ton of memories and a lot of mine are just memories from the home movies my Dad took as I was growing up. The memories I do remember are very strong though!

  18. I have always had super strong memories connected to food, which might be part of the reason I love to cook. Sharing my mom’s hot tea first thing in the morning, mugs of soup when its cold outside, the smell of grilling steak…..food combines so many senses to make memories sharp and rich.

  19. Being a Child in the eighties made all kind of memories. All the kids in the street would play after school. Until the first street light came on and our parents calling our names to tell us its dinner time. Im glad I have those memories as you dont see that much these days 🙂

  20. We have so many things we worry about now – it’s great to think about being a kid and being carefree! I have a lot of great memories as a child, and I can definitely relate to food being a big memory. Love this post idea! xoxo

  21. Amrita, I love your book memories. I went on every one of those outings with you! How I loved the Enid Blyton books.

  22. Awwwwww same pinch even I used to sleep again after having tea…..but I never thought of this as meditation…..haha….enjoyed Ur post

  23. The best about childhood memories is you are as it is minus all the ifs and buts of life.
