How to plan your new home without breaking the bank
I booked our first home in 2014 April. After 6 months of house hunting with a 1 year old baby in tow.
We used to pack lunch for Rai snacks for us, plenty of water ,wipes, my tab and a few toys for Rai in our car and
go home shopping.
We signed up for a few popular home listing sites. But you have to go and see .Can’t shop online for your home.
What I did do to buy our home ?
Saved 10% of our salaries (while doing PG) for 2 years.Couldn’t do more because my hubby had an education loan and a personal loan to pay off ,during the same period.
We then made Fixed deposits of this lump sum amount for 2 more years. That was the time limit to get a job, have a baby and find a flat we could call home.
The time we spent looking for the perfect flat ,we also had 2 recurrent deposits going ,to continue saving for the home.It was still 10%.
How this helped?
When we actually bought our homes we were able to manage the downpayment with our own money and help from my mother.Mothers are angels.Just when we thought we couldn’t make the down-payment , my mom lent us the money.
No extra personal loan at inflated prices and we did not need to use one of the bad credit installment loans available to us, which would have been one of our options. Thanks mom!
We both wanted an apartment in a housing complex.Standalone houses though wonderful for gardening didn’t really fit our budget. So budget is important.
Searching for the best home loan deal, arranging for personal loan from mommy , using our savings, it was hectic.
While buying our home we were sure about 3 things:
1)Location
Very few things are as important
2)Space.We wanted the feeling of space .To breathe and relax and also to cut my plastic sheets to make those molds for all my decorative projects.
3)The budget, didn’t want it to feel like a noose.
We cancelled a few deals because SBI had not yet approved the project.
Even with 3 years of research under my belt, I had found it is difficult to do the SBI paperwork initially ,but life is easier later.Less hidden costs and surprise charges.
Another thing that was interesting was SBI Maxi gain. It’s really cool .Our final EMI will depend on the total amount that we actually take as loan.
My flat is having its flooring done now.So it’s pretty raw at this stage. But I am excited to share the framework with you.It will help ,if we dream about it together.
While saving ideas on my
Pinterest board,
,I have decided on 6 things:
1 I want lots of plants in my home
2) I want a green wall and book walls .
Can you understand I am biophilic?
I want 2 to 3 walls to have “book walls “.Floor to ceiling is nice, with rail ladder/step stool
3)I want my rooms to blend into one another to have that feeling of space. Not wanting the feature wall option.Maybe a mural.A “patachitra”.I don’t know .Have to think more.
Really want lead free paint options here.
Researching .
4) Accessories to change the look and theme of the rooms.I want colours from the room decor rather than the wall colour.
5) Ecofriendly furnishing options. This is Z must. It has to be safe ,hypoallergenic and greenfriendly.
The question is will I find it in Kolkata.
If I find it ,can I afford it?
6) The kitchen..That’s another story.I cook regularly.Daily stuff.Rarely gourmet. I am more of a gadget dependent cook, than anything else.I really want my stuff at easy working locations.Plus I want a stainless steel modular kitchen. So research again.
A few days back one of my friends told us about her curtain shopping fiasco.18 Curtains none fit finally. The horror of getting them changed or fitted.Task to make even the decor crazy people cry.
I did tell you about my #Daily chatter challenge.
My childhood obesity research continues. But I will, be taking you along on my journey of choosing ecofriendly ,budget friendly, health promoting options for your home.
Tell me about your home decor experience. What was the one lesson you learnt?
What makes your home healthy?

Picky eater : When you need to worry
When my baby girl Rai was 6 months old we started her on all sorts of mashed food. From 6 months to 1 year it was a constant battle of experimental baby food. From 1 year to 2 years some more experiments and finally we have a balance.
Once while travelling my daughter refused to have anything ,except plain white rice and milk. Then I realized ,children have a difficult time adjusting to new food.Because….its NEW!
Imagine giving a vegetarian, a nice stir fried octopus for dinner.
Not a good idea right.
Baby’s growing up on milk have essentially a bland diet.
Veggies lack taste and texture when given boiled.
Fish chicken eggs can be smelly.
Their tender taste buds can’t handle spices.
They are fighting a battle too.
The only way to win is to persevere.
They need to learn to stop being afraid of food .To enjoy their food.Make the right choices.Making positive food choices early in life, helps them cope even away from home .
When will you call a child picky eater?
Picky eaters have strong food preferences. They have a persistent unwillingness to try new food.
Can it cause problems with nutritional status?
Yes it will cause nutritional deficiencies
50% of 19 to 24 month old children are picky eaters.Because of this , they will be avoiding micronutrient rich foods like fruits and veggies This will affect the growth of your child.
2 main problems
1)Failure to thrive .With physical and mental.development not upto the mark according to age .
2)If children develop unhealthy eating habits .This may lead to adult eating problem and health issues.
When you need to worry?
*If your child is less than 1 year:Height weight and developmental milestones need to be checked monthly.Because your baby grows ,even while you watch. The first year of life is very important. You worry, if there’s no significant positive change in the monthly assessment.
*If your child is more than 1-year-old :
Height needs to be checked every 6 months.
If child is not growing in height then that’s a cause for concern. Its a sign of chronic protein energy malnutrition.
Weight needs to be checked every 3 months .
If your child doesn’t gain weight or gains too much. Both is cause for concern.
No weight gain is due to lack of adequate dietary protein energy .
Excessive weight gain, gives rise to malnutrition of obesity.Where there is excess calories in the diet. But it lack important macro and micronutrient .
When your child shows signs of micronutrient deficiencies:
- Paleness of body.
- Repeated skin infections.
- Has repeated cold and cough
- Suffer from mouth ulcers etc.
- Is cranky
- Has little energy to play
When you don’t need to worry?
- Baby is happy ,active with good growth.
- Both height for age and weight for age is within normal limit.
What’s Neophobia?
Neophobia is the tendency of children to initially reject new or novel food.
You will have to give new food 10 to 16 times before they accept them.
Tips for parents before starting new food
- Start new food 1 at a time.
- Give gaps of 3 to 5 days before starting another new food .
- New foods should be stopped in the event of diarrhea /vomiting /rashes.These may be due to food allergy.
- During complementary feeding your baby will like softer and smoother textured foods.Gradually replace with thicker food items
- Don’t give up.Just because your baby refuses something once don’t lose heart.Make it taste different. Make it look different .A variety of food tasting is important for babies to get a taste for it.
My baby girl started her animal protein journey with fish. She refused chicken for the longest time. But mutton she liked from a pretty young age( around one and a half years)
I didn’t touch chicken throughout my pregnancy. Did you know mothers diet in pregnancy determines a child’s food habit?
She loves her eggs too.Boiled fried or poached.
I have noticed for all animal proteins she likes crunchy which will then melt in the mouth (She loves a crunchy Ilish fry). Not chewy or oily.
Since she liked the crunchy texture and I burn stuff while cooking I went and bought an air fryer.I wrote about it here.
The airfryer keeps the taste intact and the food doesn’t lose its colour ,with a fraction of the calories.

Self-love & Narcissism :Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde? (not that simple )
Self-love is a favorite topic.I once read
If you find someone to love you as much as you love yourself you will live happy.Anon
So the first step is to love yourself deeply madly crazily.
If that sounds crazy, be crazy.Do not let your self-love dry up.
Be your own bestie, be kind to yourself.Forgive yourself and let yourself live. When one thinks about the different types of love their trials and tribulations, the easiest should be self-love right?According to psychologists, it’s not that simple.
Selfish self-centered and narcissistic are all siblings. They are the different clones of the same self or ego.The one you will feed more will grow (wisdom alert!)
Narcissism by definition(Wikipedia)
Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one’s own attributes.
But healthy balanced positive narcissism or self-love is needed to develop self-esteem and self-love?This is Dr.Jekyll!
This concept was not researched in detail by Freud but by Paul Federn.
Psychologists suggest that healthy self-love is an essential part of the self or ego.
It is needed for self-preservation.
Even when you love with all your being try to keep a part of yourself deep within your soul. This is the protection that preserves your soul from all outside evil disruptive forces. This fragment of your self is the narcisstic part of us which wants to survive, to flourish to grow.
Children need this sense of self-preservation groomed into their childhood.Otherwise it tough.
But what if you love yourself too much?
If your quest for fame fortune and starshine outshines normal social norms and is at the cost of other relationships, maybe its time to pause.
While its impossible to go forward in life without self-love, self-confidence and a good dose of self-esteem, it’s equally important to have empathy and feeling of social inclusion.
When we focus too much on me we may actually lose we.
[bctt tweet=”Tending to a tree is good .But overlooking the forest for the tree is not good.” username=”misra_amrita”]
The important thing to remember hardcore narcissism is according to Freud one of the three dark triadic personality traits. The other two are psychopathy and Machiavellianism.Meet Mr.Hyde!
Food for thought anyone?
The only answer to this question from me.It’s complicated.
A balance is needed .Just like everything else in life.
