Previously known as nonspecific vaginitis and presents as:

- endometritis,
- postoperative infections,
- urinary tract infections,

- possible link with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, preterm delivery, premature rupture of the membranes, chorioamnionitis and postpartum endometritis.
Risk factors for increasing Bacterial vaginosis are
- Multiple partners
- Prior trichomoniasis,
- Intrauterine device usage,
- Smoking,
- Use of scented soap
More than 50% of all women with BV are asymptomatic.Treatment of asymptomatic women needs detailed evaluation.
