Bacterial Vaginosis:Get tested today

Bacterial vaginosis is a common problem affecting females of reproductive age group.It needs diagnosis and treatment as early as possible to avoid long-term complications.

Previously known as nonspecific vaginitis and presents as:

  • Vaginal itching
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Vaginal discharge: whitish .gray, green
  • Foul smelling discharge, often described as fishy

Gynecological and obstetric complications associated with BV

  • cervicitis
  • salpingitis,
  • endometritis,
  • postoperative infections,
  • urinary tract infections,
  • pelvic inflammatory disease
  • , mild abnormal Pap smear results
  •  possible link with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, preterm delivery, premature rupture of the membranes, chorioamnionitis and postpartum endometritis.

Risk factors for increasing Bacterial vaginosis are

  •  Multiple partners
  • Prior trichomoniasis,
  • Intrauterine device usage,
  • Smoking,
  •  Use of scented soap

More than 50% of all women with BV are asymptomatic.Treatment of asymptomatic women needs detailed evaluation.

Diagnosis of Bacterial Vaginosis:

It’s quick and painless.So definitely get it done.It is confirmed by Amsel’s Criteria and needs a sample of vaginal discharge for testing.
